Captain William Russell JOHNSON was born at Long Eddy, New York on March 7, 1920. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in October 1937 and served on the Battleship NEW YORK the L1ght Cruiser HELENA and the Aircraft Car r1er RANGER before and during the early part of World War II In April 1944 while a Chief Fire Controlman Instruc tlng at the U S Naval Gun Factory Captain JOHNSON re celved a direct commission as an Ensign and was ordered to the precommissioning deta1l of the Destroyer PUTMAN Captain JOHNSON became Gunnery Off1cer In the later phase of the Okinawa campaign He next served as Sen1or Instructor of the Atlant1c Fleet Afloat Gunnery Officers School on the Destroyers BORIE and WARRINGTON In September 1948 he attended Columbia University majoring In mathematics In July 1950 he returned to sea as the Precomm1ss1on1ng detail of the Escort Destroyer CONWAY In July 1952 Captain JOHNSON was ordered to the U S Naval Postgraduate School and the Umvers1ty of California Berkeley He earned the Bachelor of SCIGDCQ fPhys1csD and Master of Sc1ence QPhys1csJ degrees In July 1955 Captain JOHNSON reported to Destroyer MYLES C FOX as Executive Officer and Navigator In May 1957 he assumed Command of Radar Picket Destroyer Escort VANDIVER a unit of the Atlantic early warmng network From August 1958 to June 1959 Captain JOHNSON Commander Destroyer quadron Seven CAPTAIN WILLIAM R. JOHNSON U.S. NAVY JOUETT served as Commodore John son's Flagship in the Tonkin Gulf. was a student at Naval War College, Newport, Rhode Is- land. Upon completion he remained on the staff as an In- structor in Operatlonal Planmng until July 1961 when he reported to the Bath Iron Works as Prospective Command ing Off1cer of the Guided Missile Destroyer SELLERS In May 1963 he reported to the Guided M1SS11e Cruiser GALVESTON as Executive Officer Next he was ordered to the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations Capta1n JOHNSON was next a student at the National War College Fort Leslie J McNair Washington DC Later he was assigned as Ch1ef of Staff and Aide to Commander U S Naval Support Activity DaNang Republic of Vietnam dur ing the I Corps and the TET Offensive In August 1968 he reported to the Naval Ordnance Systems Command In November 1970 he assumed command of Destroyer Squad ron SEVEN deploying to the Western Pacific serving as operational unit commander in the SEVENTH Fleet lfl South China Sea areas Capta1n JOHNSON has been awarded the Legion of Merit the Navy Umt C1tat1on and sixteen other awards and campaign medals Capta1n JOHNSON IS married to the former V1rg1n1a Venemon of Paterson New Jersey They have three sons William Russell Jr David Allan and Scott Lee His family are currently residing at 980 Alameda Avenue Coronado Califorma . . . . . . 9 9 ' . - . . . .. , A ' l ll ' K . . . . . , , 3 f -- 1 ' . . . .. . . 7 7 . u l . . .
