STUREKEEPER The storekeepers are the ship's bookeepers and are responsible for supplying each work center with repair parts and consumable items. They are the managers of an inventory of over 50,000 line items. They order, stock, issue, and maintain records on each and every one of these items. Theirs is a complicated job, requiring meticulous attention to detail, for their inventory is not neatly stocked in a Warehouse, but stored in numerous storerooms deep in the holds of the ship. Thus, unless close attention is paid to where each and every repair part is stored, it could be lost for years. However, the SK's are able to perform their job in a most admirable Way. On the last Annual Supply Inspection their inventory checked out with a validity of 9571, much higher than the rest of the fleet. Team work and total coordination is the name of the game when two ships over 500 feet long and displacing over 8,000 tons are steaming side by side at 12 knots, and as close as 100 feet apart. When it is all over, everyone is exhausted, but a sense of unity exists knowing that all hands were instrumental in the successful replenishment. 88
