The keel was laid April 2, 1945 and the ship launehed June 26, J945. The sponsor was Miss Jean Kennedy, the M, ler of Lieutenant Kennedy. The ship was fitted out at Quiney. Massaehusetis and commissioned on December 15. 1945. The Commanding Officer al the time of commissioning was Commander Harry G. .Moore. U. S Navy After commissioning and a shake down cruise al Guanlanamo Bay, Cuba the Kennedy reported to Commander Uestrover Force, U. S. Atlantic Fle.t ind has operated since as a unit of the Atlantic Fleet. In November 1946 ' the Kennedy made a good wll t.ur to South America for the inauguration of the Presden of Chile. The Kennedy relumed to Newport on 1! August 1931. After participating in the Fall Fleet Fxereisc off Cuba the Kennedy entered the Boston Naval Shipyard for overhaul. Following ' the completion of the ov erhaul period during whi, h time major changes were ina.le lojhe structure and armament of the ship, includng the installation of six J 0 guns, the Kennedy spent two months al refresher training in Guanlanamo Bay Cuba This was followed by a two month assignment under Commander Operational Development Force at Norfolk, Vi.ginia. After a further period in the fall of 19,,2 the ship commenced her third Mediterranean cruise in January 1953. Ihe Kennedy, until July 1949, was the Division flagship of Destrover U.Msion 102 under Capl. W. E. Foster. USN. At that lime the U. S. Atlantic Meet Destroyer Force was reorganized and the Kennedy became the squadron llagship of Destroyer .Squadron 18 under Capl. Frank Virden. liS The shin . now the flagship of Captain J. H. THE CAPTAIN ( omniander Lander «as boru in El Paso, Texas, on November 28, 1913. He attended the College of Mines and Metallurgy of the L ' niversity of Texas for two years before enlering the United States IXaval Aeadeniy in 1933. After graduation, he served in the heavy cruiser CHESTER for two years and was then ordered to attend the Submarine School in New London, Connecticut. From the Submarine School he reported aboard the USS S-37 in Manila, P.I. where he was stationed at the beginning of World War II. In 1943, he returned to the United States and took command of the USS S-17. During the next year he was detached from the USS S-17 and relieved the commanding olTieer of the USS RONQUIL (SS396). At the end of the war. Commander Lander was ordered lo the U. S. Naval Mission to Venezuela, S. A. as Chief Advisor to the Venezuelan Naval Academy. His next duty was in Newport, R. I., where he was ordered as an instructor in Logistics at the General Line School. In the summer of 1950, Commander Lander was retained on duty in Newport, R. I. alter the General Line School was moved to Monterrey, California, in order to assist in the resumption of recruit training activities at the Naval Training Station. In March of 1951, he assumed command of the Recruit Training Command where he remained until he was transferred to his present duty as ( ' onimanding Officer of the U. S. S. Joseph P. Kennedy, ' ji. (DD85()). He married Miriam Annette Childs of Lincolnton, North Carolina, on November 21, 1943. They have no children. While the ship is operating in the Medilcrraneaii, Mrs. Lander i-xpccts to travel in Europe. (Commander Lander ' s decorations and ribbons include- ihe Silver Star Medal, the Bronze Star Medal with two gold stars and Combat V, the Presidential l nil ( .ilalion, the Army Unit Citation, the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon, and the i ' hilipinc nef(Mise Ribbon.
