The keel was laid April 2, 1945 and the ship launehed June 26, J945. The sponsor was Miss Jean Kennedy, the M, ler of Lieutenant Kennedy. The ship was fitted out at Quiney. Massaehusetis and commissioned on December 15. 1945. The Commanding Officer al the time of commissioning was Commander Harry G. .Moore. U. S Navy After commissioning and a shake down cruise al Guanlanamo Bay, Cuba the Kennedy reported to Commander Uestrover Force, U. S. Atlantic Fle.t ind has operated since as a unit of the Atlantic Fleet. In November 1946 ' the Kennedy made a good wll t.ur to South America for the inauguration of the Presden of Chile. The Kennedy relumed to Newport on 1! August 1931. After participating in the Fall Fleet Fxereisc off Cuba the Kennedy entered the Boston Naval Shipyard for overhaul. Following ' the completion of the ov erhaul period during whi, h time major changes were ina.le lojhe structure and armament of the ship, includng the installation of six J 0 guns, the Kennedy spent two months al refresher training in Guanlanamo Bay Cuba This was followed by a two month assignment under Commander Operational Development Force at Norfolk, Vi.ginia. Ihe Kennedy, until July 1949, was the Division flagship of Destrover U.Msion 102 under Capl. W. E. Foster. USN. At that lime the U. S.
