THE COMMODORE Captain Hogg was born in Knoxville, Illinois, on 25 July 1903. He attended Knox College, Galesburg, Illinois, for two years before entering the United States Naval Academy, graduating in 1927. After graduation he served three years in the light cruiser OMAHA (CLt). three years in the destroyer DENT (DD116), and one year in the oiler NECHES (A05). He then spent three years ashore, taking a post graduate course in Ordnance Engineering. He next spent three years in the baltelship and fleet flagship PENNSYLVANIA (BB38) and a tour as executive officer of the destroyer CRAVEN (DD382). before going ashore early in 1941 for three years in the Bureau of Ordnance. In 1944 he went to sea as commanding officer of the destroyer YARNALL (DD541 and then assumed command of Destroyer Division 106; during most of the year he operated with Fast Carrier Task Forces 38 ani 58. Shortly before the war ended he was aesigned as gunnery officer on the staff of Commander Amphibious Force, U. S. Pacific Fleet (Admiral Richmond Kelly Turner, USN). After a short tour in command of the attack transport TELFAIR (APA210i on Magic Carpet duty, he was ordered to the Office of the Chiet of Naval Operations, first on the panel writing United States Fieet Publications (USFs), and then to the New Developments Section of the Operations Division as Liaison Officer for the Operational Development Force. In the fall of 1948 he was ordered to the staff of Commander Amphibious Force, U. S. Atlantic Fleet, first as Plans Officer, then Operations Officer, and finally as Chief of Staff, under Vice Admirals Jerauld Wright, USN, and R. P. Briscoe, USN. During the paa year, prior to assuming command of Destroyer Squadron Eight, Captain Hogg has been a member of the group at the Naval War College. Newport. R. I., engaged in an Advanced Study of Sea Power and Strategy. He married Mary Jane Gillies of Santa Monica, California, on 27 December 1929. They have four children: Margaret 19, James 17. now a member of the plebe class at the U. S. Naval Academy, Mary Randall, 9, and Dav id Bruce 4. Their address is 55 Hunter Avenue, Newport, R. I. Capt. in Hogg ' s decorations and ribbons include the Silver Star Medal, the Bronze Star Medal with Combat V, the Commendation Ribbon, the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon with . ' even stars, and the Phillipine Liberation Ribbon with two stars.
