The keel was laid April 2, 1945 and the ship launehed June 26, J945. The sponsor was Miss Jean Kennedy, the M, ler of Lieutenant Kennedy. The ship was fitted out at Quiney. Massaehusetis and commissioned on December 15. 1945. The Commanding Officer al the time of commissioning was Commander Harry G. .Moore. U. S Navy After commissioning and a shake down cruise al Guanlanamo Bay, Cuba the Kennedy reported to Commander Uestrover Force, U. S. Atlantic Fle.t ind has operated since as a unit of the Atlantic Fleet. In November 1946 ' the Kennedy made a good wll t.ur to South America for the inauguration of the Presden of Chile. The Kennedy relumed to Newport on 1! August 1931. After participating in the Fall Fleet Fxereisc off Cuba the Kennedy entered the Boston Naval Shipyard for overhaul. Following ' the completion of the ov erhaul period during whi, h time major changes were ina.le lojhe structure and armament of the ship, includng the installation of six J 0 guns, the Kennedy spent two months al refresher training in Guanlanamo Bay Cuba This was followed by a two month assignment under Commander Operational Development Force at Norfolk, Vi.ginia. After a further period in the fall of 19,,2 the ship commenced her third Mediterranean cruise in January 1953. Ihe Kennedy, until July 1949, was the Division flagship of Destrover U.Msion 102 under Capl. W. E. Foster. USN. At that lime the U. S. U Cain, Jr L !, Navy in August 1919. The present Commanding Officer Commander R. B Lander, V. S. The ordnance insta nation includes 2 dual and 2 single 3 5(1 mounts, three S 38 dual mounts live 21 torpedo tub.-s, ami -uhmarine rork.-t-. and depth charges. THE CAPTAIN ( omniander Lander «as boru in El Paso, Texas, on November 28, 1913. He attended the College of Mines and Metallurgy of the L ' niversity of Texas for two years before enlering the United States IXaval Aeadeniy in 1933. After graduation, he served in the heavy cruiser CHESTER for two years and was then ordered to attend the Submarine School in New London, Connecticut. From the Submarine School he reported aboard the USS S-37 in Manila, P.I. where he was stationed at the beginning of World War II. In 1943, he returned to the United States and took command of the USS S-17. During the next year he was detached from the USS S-17 and relieved the commanding olTieer of the USS RONQUIL (SS396). At the end of the war. Commander Lander was ordered lo the U. S. Naval Mission to Venezuela, S. A. as Chief Advisor to the Venezuelan Naval Academy. His next duty was in Newport, R. I., where he was ordered as an instructor in Logistics at the General Line School. In the summer of 1950, Commander Lander was retained on duty in Newport, R. I. alter the General Line School was moved to Monterrey, California, in order to assist in the resumption of recruit training activities at the Naval Training Station. In March of 1951, he assumed command of the Recruit Training Command where he remained until he was transferred to his present duty as ( ' onimanding Officer of the U. S. S. Joseph P. Kennedy, ' ji. (DD85()). He married Miriam Annette Childs of Lincolnton, North Carolina, on November 21, 1943. They have no children. While the ship is operating in the Medilcrraneaii, Mrs. Lander i-xpccts to travel in Europe. (Commander Lander ' s decorations and ribbons include- ihe Silver Star Medal, the Bronze Star Medal with two gold stars and Combat V, the Presidential l nil ( .ilalion, the Army Unit Citation, the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon, and the i ' hilipinc nef(Mise Ribbon. THE COMMODORE Captain Hogg was born in Knoxville, Illinois, on 25 July 1903. He attended Knox College, Galesburg, Illinois, for two years before entering the United States Naval Academy, graduating in 1927. After graduation he served three years in the light cruiser OMAHA (CLt). three years in the destroyer DENT (DD116), and one year in the oiler NECHES (A05). He then spent three years ashore, taking a post graduate course in Ordnance Engineering. He next spent three years in the baltelship and fleet flagship PENNSYLVANIA (BB38) and a tour as executive officer of the destroyer CRAVEN (DD382). before going ashore early in 1941 for three years in the Bureau of Ordnance. In 1944 he went to sea as commanding officer of the destroyer YARNALL (DD541 and then assumed command of Destroyer Division 106; during most of the year he operated with Fast Carrier Task Forces 38 ani 58. Shortly before the war ended he was aesigned as gunnery officer on the staff of Commander Amphibious Force, U. S. Pacific Fleet (Admiral Richmond Kelly Turner, USN). After a short tour in command of the attack transport TELFAIR (APA210i on Magic Carpet duty, he was ordered to the Office of the Chiet of Naval Operations, first on the panel writing United States Fieet Publications (USFs), and then to the New Developments Section of the Operations Division as Liaison Officer for the Operational Development Force. In the fall of 1948 he was ordered to the staff of Commander Amphibious Force, U. S. Atlantic Fleet, first as Plans Officer, then Operations Officer, and finally as Chief of Staff, under Vice Admirals Jerauld Wright, USN, and R. P. Briscoe, USN. During the paa year, prior to assuming command of Destroyer Squadron Eight, Captain Hogg has been a member of the group at the Naval War College. Newport. R. I., engaged in an Advanced Study of Sea Power and Strategy. He married Mary Jane Gillies of Santa Monica, California, on 27 December 1929. They have four children: Margaret 19, James 17. now a member of the plebe class at the U. S. Naval Academy, Mary Randall, 9, and Dav id Bruce 4. Their address is 55 Hunter Avenue, Newport, R. I. Capt. in Hogg ' s decorations and ribbons include the Silver Star Medal, the Bronze Star Medal with Combat V, the Commendation Ribbon, the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon with .
