During the breakfast two of the f%A girls were honored, one was named the Future Secretary of the Year, the other was awarded a one-year schol- arship to either Columbus College or Colum- bus Tech The FSA tried to interest girls in the secretarial field and to engage them in the secretarial profession. To become a member of FSA a student was to have maintained a C” average during the previous school year and to be currently enrolled in either Short- hand 1 or Transcription. 116 Future Homemakers of America Front Row Theresa Dixon, Kathy Daniel, Brenda Shelton, Sheila Copland. The FHA also spon- sored a Valentine sock-hop to help with school activities. To become a member of FHA a student was to have had at least one year of Home Economics. For the student, being a member of FHA helped him to understand how to improve family life, to become a better member of his community, and to learn to evaluate and improve himself. 117 Future Business Leaders of America A respect for business enterprise, civic con- sciousness and leadership experiences were the main points of the Future Business Lead- ers of America. Qualifications were that each student must be a member of Vocational Office Training or had taken a previous busi- ness course. When you put these four words together in the proper context you have a yearbook. The Red Jacket staff worked hard and even put in extra hours to publish the yearbook. If a pic- ture or a line of copy was going in the year- book it had to be perfect or it was re-done. If there was a course which increased your knowledge in any subject it would have been the Annual Staff. Putting together the year- book was not all work, the members had fun also. They had a Christmas party so they might relax from the work. At the end of the year they had a party to celebrate the comple- tion of the yearbook. Students were taught the importance of developing their own skills through 155 Academics English For the first time, this year, the Muscogee Board of Education approved a special phas- ing program for all English classes where the students were grouped according to their reading achievement scores. Those having extreme reading difficulties were placed in a reading program where they were given spe- cial reading developmental assistance. Stu- dents with reading scores two or more years below their grade level were assigned to phase one classes. Within these classes, they were encouraged to achieve at their own pace with materials sufficiently difficult to improve their reading comprehension skills. Those having reading scores on or near their academic level were placed in phase two classes and assigned material to enhance their reading, composition, and oral communica- tion skills. The students with above grade level reading scores were included in phase three classes where they were given assign- ments to develop learning skills in a more advanced fashion. Vocabulary and Foreign Languages 158 Vocabulary. offered only at Jordan, helped paint a vivid picture of what the world is really like and what can be discovered through reading and understanding what has been read. It was designed to coax the stu- dents into reading, thus making them more conscious of the definitions and connotations of words and phrases. Mastering the English language takes a lifetime, but mastering Spanish or French takes only three or four years. For the first time, at Jordan, they learned these foreign languages through the use of cassette tape players and headphones. Actually hearing Spanish and French being spoken makes the languages easier to learn than when they were taught entirely from books. Oral translation, which helped the teacher evaluate the stu- dents’ progress, was also a major pan of these two courses. 159 By learning about our nation’s politics, government, economics, and geography stu- dents were able to use these skills to make better decisions; for example, in selecting candidates for city, state, and national offices. With this knowledge, the students of Jordan High graduated with a better chance to become new leaders. 162 Today’s society is based on mathematics. IVople use Math to varying degrees, whether measuring ingredients for cooking, or calcu- lating a precision course for a spacecraft. Math is the science of numbers covering, among other things, their operations and rela- tions. It is also the science of shapes: how they are measured and put together. There were a variety of maths to fit the students’ abilities. First level math consisted of General Math I, II, III, and IV. Modem Math I and II, Practical Geometry, and Inter- mediate Algebra were the second level divi- sions. The last level comprised Algebra I, Plane Geometry, Algebra II, and Analysis. When the students left Jordan, they had a better understanding of the world, thanks to math. 163 164 Environmental preservation with courses ranging in chemistry, anatomy, physics, and biology were stressed at Jordan. These courses enabled students to experiment with the ele- ments and research their own surroundings. Using their own initiative, students learned to solve problems for themselves. 165 166 The opportunity to learn job skills was provided to students in the work programs. Many juniors and seniors participated in one of the work programs depending on the type of job Distributive Education was available to students in sales; for example, cashiers and clerks. Jobs under Vocational Office Training included bookkeepers, secretaries, and office assistants. To learn food preparation and sales, an interested student might have taken Cooperative Foods. Vocational skills and industrial education were classified under Diversified Cooperative Training. Good attendance and passing grades were required of the work program students At least three hours per day had to be spent in school and one hour in related study. For the remainder of the day, the students went to various community businesses for on-the-job training. 167 168 Stenographic, clerical, and accounting, three six-unit, state-approved, programs in Jordan’s business department, were joined this year by a data processing curriculum in which a sorter, collator, reproducing machine, accounting machine, and key punch machines were used by participants learning the unit- record system of data processing. Introduc- tion to business skills taken in the ninth grade followed by tenth grade courses of Typewriting I and shorthand, and a junior year of Typewriting II and transcription were usually taken by students through the elev- enth grade in the stenopgrahic field. In the twelfth grade these pupils had a choice of taking one of three electives — VOT, office machines, and accounting. Jordanites in the clerical program usually took introduction to business skills in the ninth grade. Typewrit- ing I and office practice in the tenth. Type- writing II in the eleventh, and a choice of two out of the four electives offered which were clerical office practice II, office machines, accounting, and business law in the twelfth grade In the accounting program students took ninth grade introduction to business skills, tenth grade accounting I and Typewrit- ing I, eleventh grade Accounting II and Typewriting II, and a twelfth grade choice of one of four electives — business machines, business law, office practice, and VOT, were usually the courses taken. 169 170 Seven areas of Trade and Industrial Educa- tion were offered at Jordan. Machine, electri- cal, wood, mechanical drawing, auto, electron- ics, and sheet metal and welding labs were available to the students. These courses were structured in a manner parallel to industry with equipment identical to that used in industry. Jordanites learned trades through the duplication of jobs found in the everyday industrial world. Upon successful completion of these courses, students were able to enter the job market with a salable skill. 171 172 Band For the past twenty-seven years, the Jordan Red Jacket Band has received Superior Rat- ings. All-state tryouts, car washes, concerts, football games, and out-of-town trips kept the band and their director, Mr Joe Price, active all year. 174 Choral The Jordan Choral classes, directed by Mr Don Mailey, displayed their talents at Christ- mas and spring concerts, all-state tryouts, sight-reading clinics, car washes, state festi- vals, state literary meets, and solo-ensemble performances. Physical Education • More students became involved with Physical Education this year, and the Jacket Spirit” was really a success. Students were given considerable knowledge in the fundamentals of various games. Sports- manship was emphasized with desirable person- ality traits and character qualities. Instructed were general physical care and muscle coordina- tion. P E. was based on organized games, such as football, basketball, volleyball, and softball. Other activities offered were wrestling, tum- bling, archery , and weight training. Newer sports participated in were golf and tennis. PE. provided fun and recreation to students, and improved posture and health. ROTC To develop a knowledge of basic military skills, an appreciation of the role of the United States Army, self-reliance, leadership, and responsiveness to constituted authonty, and attributes of good citizenship and patriot- ism were the purposes of Reserve Officers Training Corps. All students, male and female, at Jordan fourteen years of age or older were offered ROTC To enhance their learning, Jordan Varsity and Jr. Varsity Rifle Teams, and Boys and Girls Drill Teams, competed with other schools in Muscogee County during the year. These students contended with each other for best squad, platoon, company, and best drill cadet. 177 Driver s Education A ten percent discount on their liability insurance induced a number of Jordanitcs to take driver’s education. The majority took the course to learn good driving habits, defensive driving techniques, and safety precautions. These students gained this knowledge through a driver’s education program which included five weeks of classroom instruction in which the teacher discussed drunk driving, insurance policies, and safety calculations; four weeks of driving on the school driving range, containing all the elements of actual street driving; and eight weeks of on the street driving in which the instructor gave the students safety tips on driving. 178 Library Education Library Education was a service organiza- tion without which the library could not have functioned properly. Students gained practical library training in the one credit course by performing routine duties daily. The mem- bers agreed to work before or after school one week out of every six weeks, checking new books, filing, and organizing cards. Taking Library Education and working in the library benefited many. Football 283 Appreciation 284 Miss Margaret Cox, Mrs. Elisabeth Davis, and Mr. Wadsworth Gentry devoted a total of 97 years of service to the school system. The students of Jordan High School will miss the guidance of these three teachers. We shall always remember the ways in which each one has helped us with our problems. Miss Margaret Cox came to Jordan in 1940 as a biology teacher and in 1947 she became a guidance counse- lor. She secured scholarships for stu- dents amounting to over a million dollars, and The Margaret Cox Schol- arship was set up in her honor. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree of Science from Judson College in Marion, Ala- bama, and a Master’s Degree from Peabody University. She created the Drama Club at Jordan and directed several prize winning plays. In 1944 she started the Sample Shop and still maintains it today. Gardening, music, and refinishing furniture, in addition to maintaining the Sample Shop occupy most of her time. Mr. Wadsworth Gentry graduated from Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia, where he received his Bache- lor of Arts Degree, and he received his Master’s of Arts Degree from New York University. He was a phys- ics teacher at Spencer High School before he became assistant principal. In 1972 he was transferred to Jordan High School as assistant principal. He holds membership in the First Afri- can Baptist Church in Columbus, and is the president of the Morehouse Club. Mrs. Elisabeth Davis began teach- ing at Jordan in 1948, and in 1958, she became the chairman of the Business Department. She remained in this position for 16 years. She holds a Bachelor of Science Degree from Georgia State University, and a Mas- ter’s of Arts Degree from Auburn University. Traveling, art, music, horseback riding, and five grandchil- dren occupy Mrs. Davis’ time. As the river so do the abilities to discover their flows endlessly, of the Jordan graduates glistening horizons.
