JORDAN VOCATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL RED JACKET COLUMBUS, GEORGIA NINETEEN HUNDRED and SEVENTY-ONE Gates To The Past CONTENTS FORMAL ADMINISTRATION CLASS ORGANIZATIONS HONORS INFORMAL 2 Registration day was so hot and sultry. Students were swarming everywhere. Little did the new and returning Red Jackets know what awaited them. Everyone was running about as though they had lost their heads, yelling at some friend. “Hey. who’d you get for English?” The groans and moans were many, the smiles few and far be- tween. Nobody wanted to give up his leisure to return to school! I Of course, getting into the swing of things was not difficult. The football games were the highlight of the weekends. Persistence was the key note of our football team. Later in the year, there were the basketball and baseball games, too. 5 Homecoming and the bonfire gave the Jackets something to look forward to. Especially the girls selected for the court. They must have been extremely excited and very proud to be representing their classes and school. And as far as the bonfire goes, who could better have “guarded the wood than the ROTC cadets? They did a great job of “baby- sitting” our fuel. In a sense, the ROTC members were well rewarded for their efforts. The military ball was a very elegant affair. Surely everyone attending had the time of his life. 6 Oh, the parking lots! Just think about it. A person put his life in mortal clanger each time he ventured to walk through one. The same goes for the halls and lunch lines. The thing about the lunch room was that after spending half his lunch break in line, a student seriously wondered if the waiting was worthwhile. By no means was the locker room any better. Unless someone had homework that absolutely had to be done, he didn t even attempt to fight the crowd getting to his locker. 7 Actually, students didn't have much time to waste. There was always a club meeting after school, or at least detention hall. How could a person get through the year without ending up there at least once. Of course, when a person had to stay that long, he could al- ways see the fountain lighted. It was so pretty, it really made a student feel proud. It's really a wonder anyone ever gets through school. It is hard to believe there were so many “obstacles during the year, but looking back through “Gates to the Past, students are glad it’s over—or are they? 8 ADMINISTRATION DR. AUTOGRAPHS 143 THE YEAR 145 146 Of course, the worst part of school everyday was the long time of preparation that was necessary. Every person hated having to trade his nice, warm bed for a long day in an uncomfortable desk. But. for some strange reason, a very large majority suffered through the routine and made the long trudge from home to school. 147 Boys Top Girls In Enrollment With boys outnumbering girls by 175. ordan’s enroll- ment climbed to 2035 tor the 1970-71 term. The sophomore class is the largest with 602. There are 521 freshmen. 509 juniors and • 403 seniors. Carmine and Orey. September, 1970. There are very few people who do not remember that long, hot and confusing day in September. The lines were unending and the waiting unlimited as teachers, coun- selors. and students went through the boring process of registration. 149 150 Very few people would have sacri- ficed as did the football players and band members. These indivi- duals came to school at least two weeks early in order to be pre- pared when the season rolled around. 151 Could anyone forget the crowded conditions and confusion that awaited them on opening day? The lunchroom, the classrooms, and even the hails were beyond be- lief. Teachers, as well as students, left that day with hopes that the next would be somewhat less chaotic. 152 As school began, students found that soon, they were well adjusted to the changes from the year before. Many students still found it hard to get to class on time and others could not stay away from the locker room. Night school students were confronted with many of the same problems as their year began also. 154 156 Jordan has three work-training programs—DE. OCT, and VOT. Students on these programs work half the day and go to school the other half. They have a special class in which they learn the essentials of the business world. These programs help Jordan in its effort to meet each student’s needs. Jordan, known as one of the most comprehensive high schools in the South, owes much to the efforts of the administration for bringing about this varied curriculum. One large part of this curriculum is the industrial labs. In these labs students work on personally chosen projects, as well as assigned projects. From these industrial labs a student can go into a skilled occupation with excellent training. 159 Every enrolled student is given the opportunity to take physical education. In a world where manual labor is almost non-existent, a good physical fitness pro- gram is essential to good health. In the Jordan physical ed- ucation program the empha- sis is on good health. This goal is obtained through ex- ercise and by planned sports. 161 The Jordan football season started even before school opened. Jordan's first game was agrinst the Carver High Tigers. The opening game was disappointing for Jordan as inexperience and mistakes took their toll. The story of the game can be seen in the rushing yardage. While Carver was running for 147 yards, their stingy defense held the Jackets to —13 yards. JORDAN 3 CARVER 18 162 JORDAN 6 BAKER 13 In Jordan’s second game of the season, the defense was greatly improved. The defense, although giving up many yards on the ground, held when necessary, and the score was kept close. The offense was still not well organized as Jordan was held to 40 yards total offense. The effort put forth was great but when time expired Jordan still trailed. 163 JORDAN 0 CENTRAL 40 Jordan ran into stiff competition when its football team faced Central of Macon. The team from Macon simply overpowered the Jackets as they ran for almost 300 yards and then passed for another 100. As in past games, Jordan’s offense faltered beneath the powerful rush from Central. 164 Jordan won its first football game of the season against North side High School. Jordan's offense finally began to move as the offensive line held. The Jordan defense did the best job it had done all season as it held the Northside team scoreless. JORDAN 12 NORTHSIDE 0 The Jackets suffered a heart-breaking defeat as they fell just short of Northeast in their fifth game of the season. The game was close all the way. Both offenses gained about the same number of yards but Northeast capitalized on breaks as its team squeaked by Jordan. JORDAN 12 NORTHEAST 14 JORDAN n HARDAWAY 14 The Jordan offense was finally beginning to move as the season reached the half way point. The offense did well against the Hawks from Hardaway but it fell one point short. Jordan missed one of its points after attempts and that was all it took for Hardaway to win. Jordan had now suffered two close defeats in a row. 167 JORDAN 8 KENDRICK 38 168 The Jordan team was next tested by the amazing Kendrick High Schol team that had surprised everyone. The Kendrick defense never faltered as it scored 4 touchdowns and its defense held Jordan to only one. The big difference was in rushing yardage as Kendrick ran for 385 yards and Jordan was held to —10 yards. I Jordan met the Spencer Greenwave in an unusual Satur- day afternoon game. The Jordan passing attack had be- come well-developed but the defense was still having its problems. Spencer ran for 260 yards and 4 touchdowns. Jordan could not keep up with the speedy Spencer team as the Jackets were defeated again. JORDAN 6 SPENCER 26 169 As the season neared the end, Jordan's offense seemed to im- prove more and more. Against Troup County the offense put some points on the scoreboard and the defense made them stand as Troup County was held scoreless. After many close defeats and tough breaks, the Jackets had finally won their second game. JORDAN 14 FORT VALLEY 0 170 As far as spirit goes, a belter game could not have been chosen for Homecoming. With the added rivalry between the Jackets and the Blue Devils, the games promised to be an exciting one. Columbus capitalized on Jordan mistakes to make some points and Jordan never caught up. The game was a tough fought battle as always but Jordan lost a heart-breaker. 171 The bonfire, an annual event at Jordan, played a large part in the Homecoming program. On the night before the game, be- tween Jordan and Columbus High, all true Jordanites come together around the fire to build their spirits for the coming game. This event, along with the other many parts of Home- coming. help to bolster the team for a Homecoming victory. 172 - Homecoming at Jordan brought both students and for- mer students together for this special game. The differ- ence in ages was hardly noticeable as all Jackets joined together to cheer their team on. The game was half over before the queen was an- nounced. This crowning of the queen and the dance fol- lowing the game climaxed the weekend. 176 After every game Jordan students got together at one of their favorite places. Between hites of food, they would talk of both the good and had moments. These small gatherings after the game were as much a part of the season as the games themselves. On weekends . . . restaurants, drive-ins, putt-putt courses, and shopping centers, proved to be the popular places as students sought to refresh themselves for the coming school week. 177 179 After two months of school students began to look eager- ly toward Thanksgiving holi- days. With the holidays came two extra days of re- laxation. The holidays were fun but far too short. For that reason students were hardly back before Christmas holidays were foremost in their minds. Soon shopping began to take the place of homework. With a shout of joy. school let out for two weeks of leisure. 180 After two months of school students were ready for the Thanksgiving holidays. The free time and turkey were great but not enduring, ffowever. immediately after Thanksgiving, their thoughts were turned to Christmas with parties, shopping, carols and every anticipation but not to homework and school. 181 182 Jordan opened its basketball against Central with a 95-54 loss. Jordan had little height and much inexperience and these faults proved to be costly all season. Jordan fell to Kendrick 63 to 48 in a close game which Kendrick pulled out. In Jordan's next start against Hardaway, the Hawks won 74-52. Spencer was Jordan’s next opponent and Jordan never came close as the final score was 100 to 47. 183 Jordan next played Baker and the stingy defense of Baker held the Jackets to 30 points as the Lion offense scored 70 points. Jordan had its second chance at Hardaway but she again fell short by a score of 63 to 41. Jordan’s next game was against Northeast in an out-of-town game. Jordan was defeated 91-57. Jordan got another chance at Kendrick but Jordan again lost 77-61. 184 186 As the season passed the half-way point Jordan still had not won a game. Against F.ufaula. Jordan lost 82- 60 in its next game. Jordan faced Columbus and the Jacket’s spirits were uplifted in hopes of upsetting the Blue Devils. Jordan kept it close but lost 68-56. Jordan’s next two games were against reigning 2-AAA west champion. Carver. Carver’s height proved to be too much as Jordan lost 85-69 and 108-62. 187 188 Jordan neared the end of the season without a victory and the scrapy Jackets sought hard to win one. against Spencer. Jordan fell 92-65. Baker's defense again proved to he too much as Jordan fell 73-58. Jordan’s last chance for victory was ironically against Columbus. With this added incentive, Jordan fought hard but fell 86-71. VttOODMU: ()1 TOUACXX LI1 phcmixsks u Jordan’s science fair, seeking to promote interest in science, was made up of projects from all the science classes. From the school fair several students went to the district fair. These students won for Jordan the large rotating tro- phy by winning the most places. At the same time, the social sci- ence department was sponsoring its social science fair. From the school fair, students entered the- district fair and won second place for Jordan. 190 191 The biggest social event of the year for the ROTC program oc- curred in Fehraury—the annual Military Ball. The queen, Judy Sasser, was crowned as members of the Jordan ROTC unit and their dates looked on. 192 193 Many of Jordan’s students reverted to their childhood as the Easter bunny made his annual trip. Students, although con- sidered to be far too old by many, colored eggs and then had their own Easter egg hunt. On this day churches were packed for the services. Many church choirs presented special programs for the large crowds of people. Some people were even up before sunrise so that they could be present for sunrise services. 195 The Reserved Officer Training Corp. more widely known as ROTC, is one of the most worth- while of all courses. In ROTC a boy is taught to have respect for others as well as for himself. He learns how to obtain self-disci- pline and also how to become adept in rifle training, drilling, first aid, and map reading. ROTC is a must for any boy planning to enter the Army. 197 In April the ROTC pro- gram finally came to the federal inspection. The purpose of this federal in- spection is to evaluate and rank Jordan's unit in military adeptness . The entire unit march- ed past a review stand to music furnished by the band. Special honors were presented to those cadets who had shown outstand- ing service and scholastic achievement. 199 The Jordan baseball team got off to a good start, behind the pitching of Paul Wright, as they defeated Westover in their first game, 8-0. Jordan opened its bid for the Bi-City Tourna- ment Championship with a 13-1 rout of Carver. Anthony Dimi- tri struck out 14 Carver batters and was the winning pitcher. In the semi-final game Jordan was matched against Cen- tral of Phenix City. Mike Reeves made short work of the Red Devils, holding them to one run while the Jackets were scoring eight. For the championship Jordan forced their long time rival, Columbus. Paul Wright was the winning pitcher as Jordan de- feated Columbus, 6-3 for the chamiponship of the Bi-City. A- 201 Coming out of the Bi-City tournament with a four game winning streak, Jordan faced Baker. The Jordan pitching held up as Anthony Dimitri limited the Lions to two runs and Jor- dan extended its string to five games by winning. 6-2. Jordan suffered its first de- feat at the hands of the Colum- bus Blue Devils. The game turn- ed out to be a superb pitching battle. Columbus scored a run in the bottom of the last inning to win. 1-0. Jordan got back their win- ning style with their next two games against Spencer and Cen- tral. Spencer was beaten sound- ly by the Jackets 15-4. Don Taylor was the winning pitcher for Jordan. Paul Wright gained his second shut out of the sea- son by blanking Central. 12-0. 202 203 204 Jordan fared Carver for the second lime during the season and the result was the same. Anthony Dimitri gained his first shut out of the season, as Jordan won 8-0. Hardaway visited the Jordan diamond for a game that deter- mined who would he on top in region 2-AAA West. Jordan won in a close contest. 3-2. Paul Wright was the winning pitcher. In their next game Jordan defeated a tough Auburn team. 14-4. Don Taylor picked up the win which was his second of the season. Paul Wright, by now established to be one of the best pitchers in the Bi-City, won his fifth game against Kendrick. Jordan scored early and held Kendrick down to win. 7-0. 205 206 209 210 Jordan had over forty organizations this year. With forty clubs, the list of projects were endless. The Future Homemakers of America sponsored a fashion show, put on before the stu- dent body, in which girls modeled their own creations. Home Economics work all year on becoming better homemakers. Here Home Economics students inspect some of their utensils. The Future Business leaders of America, in an effort to promote school spirit, sold pom-poms during the football sea- son. The football players gave up many hours of their free time practicing, hut on the game days they found those hours well spent. The players were given special favors by the stu- dents. The football table sponsored by different clubs in the cafeteria was one such favor given them. The band practiced hard all year on improving their playing ability but they, as everyone else, experienced some lighter moments. 212 213 The Red Jacket staff had its hands full all year writ- ing copy, taking pictures, and drawing layouts in order to produce the annual. Gamma Tri-Hi-Y, sponsored by Mrs. Elizabeth Greene, was one of the most active service clubs at Jordan as shown by the many awards they re- ceived. They spent many hours in service to our school and community. Distributive Education students, though busy with their jobs as well as school work, were always happy to help in school projects. The National Honor Society, the scholastic club of Jordan, requires high ex- cellence in scholarship, leadership, service and character from all members inducted. The Junior Civitan. always community minded, col- lected for the Heart Fund as one of their projects. The Library Club offered inexpendable service to Mrs. Mabel Smith in operating the library. The Carmine and Grey staff shared their lighter moments between issues of the paper with their sponsor. Miss Helen Shepard. The Future Teachers of America had some actual practice when they served as teachers’ aides as their project. 215 216 Throughout the course of the year, the Drama Club presented two plays and an April Fool’s Show. These students also represented Jordan well in drama com- petition. Junior Achievement, a learn-bv-doing organization, was beneficial to all students planning to enter the busi- ness world. These students planned, produced, and dis- tributed goods in an effort to build a successful company. The Student Council, the student government at Jordan, was always active in bringing about communication between the students and the administration. Mike Reeves, vice president, was active in these efforts. Bi-Phy-Chem, the science club at Jordan, sold Jordan book covers and also collected toys at Christmas for underprivileged chil- dren, as well as sponsoring the school science fair. Mem- bers are shown here at their annual fall picnic. 217 The Future Secretaries of America pre- pared themselves throughout the year to be good secretaries. As one of their projects, they sold recipe books. The Students of the American Way made a large contribution to the Homecoming. They, as in years past, sold corsages for the game. The Zeta Tri-Hi-Y, sponsored by Mrs. Juanita Ridley, had several projects. One of their major projects was the distrbiution of small tags re minding others to keep the true meaning in Christmas. The French Club made a major con- tnuution to the social life at Jordan. The club, along with many other clubs, co-sponsored the Spring Fling, a formal dance. The March of Dimes Board, head- ed by Miss Pat Watkins and Mrs. Eliza- beth Greene, brought Jordan to the top in the annual Walkathon. Jordan stu- dents raised more money than ever be- fore in a Walkathon. The Diversified Cooperative Training Club worked hard all year long. With their printing presses, they printed all types of paper articles for evaluation and graduation. Students of the American Way made their annual trip to the state capital where they met and talked with the governor and lieu- tenant governor. 218 ro ro o Jordan had two National Merit Final- ists. Randy Hall and Paul Turner, pic- tured here with Miss Margaret Cox. They gained this honor through their performances on written examinations. Two Jordan students won places in the Optimist Oratorical Contest. This speech contest was sponsored by the Optimist Club for high school students under sixteen. The two winners. Mike Spivey and Steve Riddle, are pictured with Miss Evelyn Haul. Jordan students won many places in the VICA competition. These contests are sponsored by the VICA clubs for these students enrolled in the vocational areas. Pictured are Mike Harrison and John Ridley who placed in the Plymouth Trouble Shoot- ing contest. The other winners were Gary King. TIG and MIG Welding; Al Wells. Electronics; Allen Daughterey, Arc Welding; Steve Dean. Machines; Joe Harvard. Mechanical Drawing; and Presley Tutherow. Mechanical Drawing. Elaine Sharpe was declared to be Jordan's outstanding shorthand student. She went on to win the Slate Shorthand Award. The cheerleaders were recog- nized and rewarded for their efforts throughout the year. Pictured is San- dra Brubaker. The other cheerleaders were Carol Davidson. Denise Floyd. Judy Hay, Laura Malloy, and Jill Wright. Steve Ellis, a Jordan senior, won the district Penny Art Contest. This was an art contest sponsored by a state wide women's club. 221 222 Student Council officers for the 1971-72 school year were elected late in the year. Those chosen to fill the places of departing offi- cers were Joyia Anthony, presi- dent; Denise Floyd, vice-presi- dent; Donna Coker, secretary; and Jill Wright, treasurer. The Daugh- ters of the American Revolution made their annual citizenship award. Nominees for the award were Vickie Caudle, Ada Bentley, and Judy Stuart. Ada Bentley won the award. The Betty Crocker Foundation made an award to the best homemaker at the respective schools. Judy Whitley, by virtue of her homemaking ability and her scores on a written examination, won the award at Jordan. Susan Tate, Jordan’s outstand- ing typing student, was awarded first place in the district typing contest. She competed with entries from other schools from the entire district. Both the Distributive Edu- cation club and the Diversified Co- operative Training club gave rec- ognition to their outstanding stu- dents. Debbie Cook won the DE award and Reba Mack won the DCT award. These awards were based on personal achievements and on contributions to the or- ganizations. 223 Kiddie Day at Jordan was a day of very little discipline. Seniors took their last fling at child- hood before graduation. Sen- iors wore those clothes which they wore during childhood. They played childish games which on any other day they would have laughed at the mere thought. 225 Every student had been counting days for two months, the end of school neared, and finally the day had come. For underclass- men, the closing of school meant only a few months of leisure before starting again. Seniors looked at the situa- tion differently. For many of them it meant the last of any formal schooling. For others it was only a stepping stone to college. Whatever it meant, all were saddened at the thought of leaving. But with the ringing of a bell, the day ended and so did school. 227 The day had finally arrived to which all seniors had looked forward. The day when they could officially be out of high school—graduation day. Every student surveyed his whole life as he walked down the aisle that night. As they left the audi- torium, each Senior was appre- hensive of his new role. 228 230 ADVERTISEMENTS l PRINTERS PUBLISHERS LITHOGRAPHERS f ANNUALS CATALOGS BOOKS Printed to order i MULTIPLE CARBON BUSINESS FORMS “ RULING JOB PRINTING k ENGRAVED INVITATIONS ANNOUNCEMENTS f and CALLING CARDS k BOOKBINDING of all kinds BIBLES Old books and Valuable Documents repaired OFFICE FURNITURE STATIONERY 'Columbus Office Supply Company TELEPHONE - FAIRFAX 2-4478 1335 37 SIXTH AVENUE COLUMBUS.
