Some of those courses were toughg some more inter- esting than others for maybe the difference was just the teacherl. There were those of you who studied and those of you who coasted through. But the opportunity was there for all of youg you could take high school life or leave it. Most of you took it to the saturation point. Anyway, your school spirit didn't lag. When the A team played, you always turned out. Rain, cold, or hot weather didn't much matter. ln the grandstands you did your part yelling but couldn't understand why that end missed that pass. You trained during the season on moonpies 8. big orange, and put in your practice at rousing pep rallies. While some hounded your coaches for passes, you willingly paid thirty-five cents for a win. Once the season was over, the A boys retired and gave you, of the herd, a place in the sun. For at Jordan intramural sports were the rage. You all could participate and the offerings were varied. ,r gif- ,, .1 ,- , You were always keen for everything social . . . from juke box jive to black-formal symphony. How you loved the rhythm! Some folks called it dancing, but that wasn't your name for it, to you it was the Bop, Rock'n' Roll, and Sixteen Tons, For regular dancing and music you liked Love is a Many Splendored Thing or Polon- naise, Dance intermissions were always great times. The Red Jacket for a coke with the gang, the sidelines for swapping jokes with the girls, or any spot named Just for Two . . . these glorified your hours and made you love life for the sheer living of it. 11,60 t tr-fx, Qatar, A NXIH ri W P . Born in September, you opened your life land have renewed its vigor perenniallyl with the opening of September school sessions. Your promising ability in liberal and fine arts blossomed first in Selma, Alabama. There you won honors in debates, in drama, in music. Later, when you transplanted your energies to Judson and Vanderbilt, your life developed strong new branches of athletics, scholarship, and leadership. And finally, as teacher and guidance specialist, you have grown and borne abundant fruit at Jordan. Enriched by study at Columbia and by well- rounded ideals for home, church, state, your life is like a tree planted by the rivers of water. The mock trial presented by the Young Lawyers Club in the Superior Court Room demonstrated court procedures. The Bradford FTA served as hosts tor the ocassion. Education Week saw the FTA members spending one day in the classrooms in the fields ot their choice. This pioneer movement was a great success. Some FTA members observed while others taught. Visits were made to the Capitol, Emory University, the Cyclorama and President Roosevelt's Shrine at Warm Springs. From time to time outstanding teachers were invited to lecture. Coach Sumpter Blackman FOOTBALL JORDAN 7 0 MOULTRIE 20 Speed, experience, and versatility were the principal features of the 1955 Red Jacket football squad which com- pleted the season with a record of 5 wins and 5 losses. The Carmine and Grey gridiron warriors commenced the season by blasting arch-rival Columbus High completely off the field with a score of 30-l2 before the largest crowd that had ever witnessed a prep school football game in Memorial Stadium. Coach Sumpter Blackmon had 9 let- termen returning for this year's team, 4 of which were selected for the All-Bi-City honor squad. Senior end Walter Buce, one of the choices of the local mythical team, also was given a position on the Atlanta Constitution's All-State team as an hon- orable mention. Jordan's gridiron performers and coaches formally ended the season with the annual football banquet, which fea- tured Auburn's Olin Cunningham as the principal speaker. Frank Copeland was named as the Most Studious Player at this affair. D Eddings T Sr B. Holt--E., Sr. D. Killingsworth F B S E. Russell-C., Sr. W. Sammons-H. B., Sr. J. R. Bennett-E., Jr. LAGRANGE 13 JORDAN 0 R, Dansby-C., Jr. F. Dean-T Summarizing the gridiron activities of the Red Jackets during the '55 campaign, many breath-taking moments and hard- fought battles can be recalled as the Big Reds marched into battle against their foes. Fresh from the first victory over Co- lumbus High since l952, the Jordanites committed a total of eight fatal errors to drop a Region l-AA tussel with the Moul- trie Packers by a score of 20-7. To add to the Jackets losing column the LaGrange High Grangers tripped the Carmen and Grey warriors l3-O in one of the most im- portant games of the season. Although the Jordan crew compiled 90 yards rushing in the first half to dominate that phase of the game, the score at intermission showed the Grangers in the lead 7-O-a result of an intercepted pass. LEE I3 JORDAN 13 ALBANY 6 Taking advantage of every opening offered, the Red Jackets climbed from the ranks of the vanquished by trouncing Eu- faula 33-0 in a non-region affair. JHS for- got its manners as host to the Alabama squad, as the Jacket aggregation rolled up lO first downs to boast a total of 240 yards rushing to the visitors mere 5, Jordan's biggest heartbreaker came in one of the most evenly-matched Bi-City championship games ever played by local prep school gridiron teams. Fighting for the Big Four crown against the Central High Red Devils, Jordan allowed the Devils to score in the waning minutes of the game to retain the local title. Following the opening kickoff, the twc teams battled for three scoreless periods with the entire game being one of defen- sive strategy, until late in the last quarter the Central aggregation managed a touch- down pass for the winner's spoils. Other wins were over local Bi-City rival Baker and region foes Albany and Robert E. Lee, while losses were taken from Lanier and Central High, Tennessee state cham- pions. Jordan's gridiron performers and coaches formally climaxed the best season since l95l with the annual football banquet, which featured Auburn's Olin Cunningham as the principal speaker and which honored Senior Frank Copeland as the Most Stu- dious Player on the l955 Squad.
