Woven perceptibly and imperceptibly into the patterns of classroom procedure and campus activities are motifs that epitomize the freedoms treasured by free men everywhere-in every age, and es- pecially by Americans who think. Designs in living at Jordan are illuminated and illumi- nating because they emanate from American principles of Liberty, These designs guide all who seek the vigorous and abundant way of life. AGGIE DEAN SCOTT Under the capable leadership and skillful enterprise ot Mrs. Aggie Dean Scott, chairman of Social Studies, Jordan students and faculty have been recognized in this nation as a team of workers for Freedom. The Freedoms Foundation Awards are offered annually to American schools which point up the fundamental principles on which our way ot lite is based. Director of JVHS Programs Winning Freedoms Foundation Awards for three consecutive years. Freedom - operates continuously at Jordan through student franchise, Jmadomn, D . dwafwla, lVaIley Forge, Pennsylvanial For the third consecutive year Jordan High School has received the Freedoms Foun- dation Awards for teaching and achieving the American way of life. .lordan's award this year consisted of an all-expense paid pilgrimage to Valley Forge for Mrs. Scott and Iris Tarvin and a Freedom Library consisting ot film, books, recordings, and other teaching aids. Jordan was selected on the strength of several of its school programs which empha- size the American way of life. Mrs. Scott's social studies classes, which were responsible for the past two awards, contributed tape re- cordings ot a radio broadcast and a summary of their panel for parents. Summaries of Student Council activities and assembly prorgams and school newspaper editorials giving emphasis to democracy were part of Jordan's entry. Jordan's band also figured in the award, having taken part in the American Legion Convention in New York last summer. 79.53 ' fzeealdma g - 9 301, Qnmomacq, BY HAROLD GIBSON ISECOND PLACE ESSAY, MUSCOGEE COUNTYI . ln a small soft voice, from the depths of the dark murky void which in today's tangled snarled mess that we call a mighty civilization, a great age, the Age of Golden Opportunity, a message is coming-a message not commanding, not begging, not fearsome, but a message in such a soft gentle tone, hardly audible-seemingly softer than a whisper-that even the most hardened Anti-Christian Socialist cannot help stopping to listen-and think. It is a great message. lt is a message of hope for the downtrodden and enslaved, a message of warning to all those who would seek to enslave mankind. lt is the message of freedom and of peace. ls this small voice able to carry such a great message? Can it be heard around the world: in Eu- rope, in America, in the Pacific, in the Atlantic? No, it cannot be heard around the world, for in many parts of our world the lust for power has thrown up iron curtains through which the voice cannot pene- trate-curtains of hate, of murder, of propaganda, of slavery. More than one-third of mankind today is enslaved by power-mad men. They cannot hear the message. Can others? Can Americans understand what the message means? Do they know where its text was taken? Can they repeat what it says? I can. l know its Speaker well. I know the source of its text. l can understand its meaning. l can repeat what it says. And to the small voice I will add my voice, and the small voice will be amplified by my voice. The voice will be a little louder, a little more compelling, the message, a little stronger. And to my voice another voice will be added, and to this voice more voices, and to these voices even more voices until the first voice is loud yet pleasant, and compelling yet gentle. And then it will be heard around the world. lt will penetrate the iron curtains until the power-mad men will run and hide in the deepest darkest corners of their cellars, until the downtrodden will walk with heads held high, until the enslaved will throw off their bondage. lt will sound louder and louder until peoples will enjoy all the freedoms that the Maker intended: freedom to establish their own governments, freedom to worship as they please, freedom to speak without fear, freedom to love and be loved, freedom to live in peace and freedom to awake in peace. When these things are accomplished, the voice will become inarticulate, but it will still remain an undying echo as a symbol and as a warning. And then when men seek power they will remember the message, they will walk softly, they will cease their conquests and will return from where they came. How do l know these things? As I have said, l know the Speaker and I understand the message. How can others learn the meaning? Simply by bowing their heads and praying. Then they will meet the Speaker. He will teach them the meaning, and then they can repeat it, too. Then they will add their voices to our voices, and the message will be a little louder, a little more compelling, a little stronger. It will carry a little farther, lt will penetrate a little more of the iron curtains. lt will carry a little more hope, a little more warning. Here is my voice. l speak for Christian democracy now and forever. 6012, Crflulv, Jm, Qxznwrfzacq, PRIZE-WINNING ESSAYS ADVOCATING THE PRIVATE PRACTICE OF MEDICINE AS THE AMERICAN WAY .mn ' JIMMY ORR BARBARA SEWELL EDDIE TILLMAN First Place Second Place Second Place State State County and County 6012, lead Jim way, Jn Qunorhacq, THROUGH AMERICAN-SANCTION ED ACTIVITIES IRIS TARVIN L. Today we arm with inspiralfon To mee! a world-life's ileslirzafion. Do you remember that warm fall morning four years ago when we started on the road through high school? lt was September l949 that we came from different pathways throughout the city to form the class of '53, Many have joined us and many have left since that time, making each senior feel infinitely richer from these new and parting friendships. Although some people say that we have lived our happiest years, we believe that the best of life is still before us. The books we have studied in these twelve short years are like maps that will guide us on the long, twisting road ahead. Many of us will encounter detours, but the strength and inspiration from our teachers and friends will always urge us forward, Among the large freedoms enjoyed in our democratic homeland are numerous little ones-school-connected4that are not always included when we count the freedoms of a democracy. One of these is the freedom to enjoy the fads we fancy. Remember the era of tlorescent clothing? The peroxided hair? The chills of football and basketball games? The rhythm and fame of cur Red Jacket Band, which was named the best band in the land? Each eagerly awaited issue of the Carmine and Grey? Our many Freedoms Founda- ticn awards? The parties furnished by the various clubs of Jordan? We could go on and on naming these, but why put them on paper when they will live on in our hearts forever? Now as we decide which of the highways of maturity to travel, we are enjoying another of these freedoms: the freedom of choosing a profession or our life's work, And whether we speed along in comfort or become a hitch- hiker-both riding and walking, we shall have faith that each senior of the class of '53 may some day reach his longed-for destination. --Marilyn Miller. ff 4 'mein W' M 1 5 ' s 5 ' Klazm Uggzkma President Vice-President . . But to us, our four high school years, as strange as it may seem to others, are something very special. lt was only yesterday, it seems, that we landed--frightened and green we were-in a whole new world to which we had looked forward for a long, long time. At first, we found life difficult, though soon we discovered hodres of sophomore consultants who were not only willing but also eager to advise us to make the right beginnings! From these teachers we learned discipline, we learned manners, we learned obedience, and after nine months of apprenticeship, we ourselves were in shape to begin our course of instruc- tion for the pitiful greenhorns who showed up the following falll Because we had become well adjusted and happy, mature life really began with the second year, and now when we look back to appraise the accomplishments of the past two years, the character of the result is chiefly a question of our mood, When we are optimistic, the record is staggeringly impressive, We see numbers of our class exhibiting startling talent in music. We see others, born athletes, attaining their full stature and giving to the whole world a model for the perfect Sportsman. We see others displaying histrionis ability that would do credit to Broadway. And we see still others, who have devoted themselves to the unostentatious pursuit of learning, finding themselves an Einstein or a Schweitzer. But-now we begin to feel a change of mood. The picture grows less enchanting, and we sense misgivings about the record. Now and then a neglected opportunity comes to mind, and somehow or other we seem vaguely to remember admonitions by which we might have profited. Maybe there were times when we failed to act the part of a real man and we must face up to the fact that there was much knowledge that we were too lazy to acquire. A tiny bit depressing is his view! The one bright spot, we comfort ourselves, is the fact that there is another year. Nine long months we'll have to cast the die. Both truthfully and hopefully we say that we intend to show strength to determine the result in our favor. ff? Having passed the half-way mark in our high school careers, we, the Sophomores of l953, hold our heads high, knowing that we are no longer strangers, but a definitely real and important part of the student body. After completing two successful years at Jordan Vocaional High School, we are prepared to accept the trials and challenges the next two years have to offer. When we entered Jordan as Freshmen, we were shy and a little fright- ened at this immense school and its hundreds of students, and we looked upon the Juniors and Seniors with awe, Now all of us find that we are more interested in school organizations and activities, and many in our class are active participants in the Choral Club, the Band, the Art Club, the Dramatic Club, and the Tri-Hi-Y. We have excelled in scholastic work as well as in other activities, for a large number of us have been on the Honor Roll. We know our teachers better this year, and we feel free to discuss our problems with them. We would like to express our appreciation for their patience and guidance. During the next two years, we hope that we can live up to Jordan's ideals and that our lives and pensonalities may measure up to the true spirit of our great school. qiqtzhonwmz, gm Umm, Jack Boone . . . ,.,. S 3 cker, Bennie Turnage, H J 6'lf14-L' In September, l952, the Freshman Class came together for the first time, We all felt very strange and ill-at-ease as we came through Jordan High's doors, and one can imagine how great our awe and timidity was when we were clapped into assembly that morning. Jordan was indeed strange on the first day, but as the days and weeks passed, we grew to love Jordan and its students and came to understand the good nature and fine spirit of the school. We learned the names and faces of our teachers and fellow- students, settled into a routine of study, took part in some of the many and varied activities of Jordan, and entered enthusiastically into cheering Jordan teams to victory, We truly became part of Jordan. Our freshman year has been filled with opportunities to broaden our experiences and interests, With the guidance of our teachers and principals, we have worked to make the best of these opportunities. Because we know that what we accomplish this year will greatly affect our future at Jordan and after graduation, we have willingly struggled to do our best in any work we had to do. The i952 season found the Red Jackets moving from top to bottom in the winning column, for the team could match points with but three of their nine opponents. In spite of this, however, the backfield and James Ethridge on the line played the game well and gave the fans many thrills that they will long remember. For their fine playing and good sportsmanship five seniors should be especially commended. They are James Ferrell, captain and leading Bi-City scorer for two years, Don Kinser, Co-alternate captain and l95l Bi-City center, Charles Cox, co-alternate captain and i952 Bi-City end, and James Storey, who turned in the most sensational run of the i952 campaign. Others that are to graduate are Denard Booth, regular fullback, Lamar Chestnut, number one substitute in the city, Franklin McGarr and L. C. Mac- Quirter, two fine ends, Bill Williams, a tackle, James Ethridge, the big man of the squad and one of thir- teen Georgia boys listed on the All-American high school team, and Connie Turner, who was the smallest man on the team but the biggest battler, Y? Because ot their slow beginning, they were unable to muster enough wins to go to the State Tournament, Their record for the season was ten wins against eight losses.
