Administrators serve as special advisers. One of its duties is to cooperate with student committees concerning problems that arise throughout the school year. The Council functions as an evaluative unit in planning for curriculum revision. 17 irr n TnfprboC i bcxjvrruuij ENTRAIWEST DISTRICT Jhmkinq. Senior QlaAbu MLdJbhif With great anticipation, yet with grave reluctance, we have finally come face to face with our future. For once we see ourselves as we are to be. The contingent plans of each individual are now being held in abeyance until after that final day when we shall walk across the stage and receive our diplomas. As we linger to do a little reminiscing of the past, we remember how timid and unimportant we felt when we entered Jordan four years ago as Freshmen. As the years passed, however, we learned to love our school and to feel a part of it. Many of us achieved distinction in the academic, commercial, or shop courses; others were recognized in music, art, dramatics, or sports. At times the path was hard and rugged; some were left along the way, but we are proud that we have survived. This last year we have come to realize that we are no longer living in a “do-nothing world but in an atomic and scientific world filled with all types of people of different races and creeds. We have studied, but we have not yet mastered, the art of getting along with these people. We, the graduating class of '52, are grateful for our school with its many departments. We leave with a sense of regret but also with a joy we never could have known but for the kindness, generosity, and guidance of our teachers. We realize that we are the spirit of America— the citizens of tomorrow. “In the service of mankind lo be A guardian god below; still to employ. The mind’s brave ardor in heroic aims. Such as may raise us o’er the gravelling herd. And make us shine forever. That is life . . Barbara Garrett. 20 Smu l QIoAA. OjtfjUCQAA. We have made known our shortcomings as well as our assets; but we have tried to overcome the former in order that we might contribute something constructive toward the building of the school. When we first entered Jordan as Freshmen, we found the novelty of high school absorbing. Later, as we began to feel more secure, our attention was drawn to the many extra curricular activities in which we could partici- pate. A large number of us have given our time and energy to the athletic program, and we are especially proud of the fact that we can claim an athlete who won the highest score in the Bi-City Football League. We believe that we have in our athletes not only quantity but also quality; for, on the whole, they are boys to be proud of—good, clean, hightone boys who exert a whole- some influence on the whole student body. We have a firm conviction that we should excel in scholarship as well as in athletics, and we have a fair number of students on the Honor Roll. Music, too, has claimed its share of our time and talents. We can boast of a large number of students in the school band, the mixed chorus, and the art classes. Eagerly, but also with reluctance, we move on to become dignified seniors during the coming year. We should like now to express to our teachers our grateful appreciation for their kind and patient helpfulness during the past three years; and we should like to beg of them continued consideration until we have completed our work at Jordan. 56 QumiA, QlaAAu CftfficcAA. We are ready to accept the challenge of completing a greater achieve- ment and goal—becoming graduates of our school in a few more years. In looking back over our past two years, we find memories that draw many contrasts of our activities and feelings. Changes have come about to make our school life different and, in many ways, more interesting. The best change is that our circle of friends has grown much larger. From the first timid, doubtful, almost fearful days here at our larger school, our ac- quaintances have grown so that we no longer feel as strangers in a foreign land. And in knowing the students better, we have felt our interest grow in watching others participate and compete in the various activities of the school. Our some- what casual interest in sports has grown into a zest for victory of our chums and buddies. Our interest in clubs has deepened when we have participated and made closer friendships through them. Our anxiety in contests has grown keener when we have really known those competing. Many friends have made a different pic- ture of life. We have enjoyed being able to make some choice in our subjects this year. This especially makes a difference when we have a little more definite idea of the kind of career we want. We have grown to know more teachers on the faculty this year; we cannot leave without expressing our appreciation to them for their guidance in our studies, activities, and personal development. Our added responsibilities this year have made us more conscious of the things that must be done, and we have tried harder to do more and better work. We have also realized that a good school citizen is a good school student. This realization has been an added incentive to do better scholastic work. The scope of our activities has widened to make us all-round students. Some of us have been participants, some observers; but we shall all remember our inter- est and days of fun in Jordan's sports, clubs, band, glee club, dramatics, and other fields of activity. With all these our Jordan Spirit has grown within us and made us more loyal students. And so, we realize that every year seems to be different in many ways, but the important fundamentals that characterize Jordan as being our school remain the same every year. We move on with the hope that we can make these high principles and characteristics our own, that our lives and personalities may measure up to the true spirit of our great school, Jordan. 66 SophomoML gla A. We, the Freshman Class of 1951-52, entered in September upon a new phase of our educational development. After spending many happy years in grammar school and junior high school, we finally reached our long-looked- forward-to ambition—high school. Our teachers guided us and planned our activities for us while we were in elementary school; now we must help our teachers plan for our future. What we make of our freshman year will determine, to a great extent, what our entire high school days will be. We have many wonderful oppor- tunities offered at Jordan. We have good departments in every subject, interesting and worth-while clubs which we may join, and a very varied athletic program which we may participate in and enjoy. What more could we ask? When we first enrolled at Jordan, we were timid and afraid, realizing that it was different from the school to which we had been accustomed. We found that we were little fish in a big pond . But as time passed, we began to feel that we were not so small after all. We had a good prin- cipal, understanding teachers, and helpful upper classmen to direct us upon the right course; and our fears began to disappear. Now we feel that we are a real part of Jordan We want to hold high the spirit of loyalty, coop- eration, and service which has been our heritage from the Jordan of the past. May our class be an example to other classes of the future. May we be true to our Alma Mater, Jordan High School, and uphold its standards always. With ropes of the past, may we ring the bells of the future. 76 jASL hmjarL QIoaa. Jack Boone Lamar Taylor Carol Chestnut Bobby Jones . Since Coach Blackmon has been directing athletics at Jordan, the school has made marked progress, both in the seasons' records and in the spirit and good sportsmanship shown among the boys. Bobby Chambless receives the Thom McCan trophy, which is awarded each year to the most valuable Bi-City foot- ball player. Making the presentation of the trophy is Bob Pruitt, sports editor of the Columbus Enquirer. In 1951, Jordan Vocational High School fielded a team of which all Columbus was proud. This team won the Region I AA Championship, the first time this has ever been accomplished by a Jordan team. During the regular season regional play, Jordan won six games and lost one to finish in a tie with Albany for the region title. Jordan defeated Albany in the play-off in the last 45 seconds, 14-13 for the region championship. Jordan finally lost out in the game for the South Georgia title to Richmond Academy, which went on to win the state championship. Aeadows, Davis Greene, Cliff Brittingham, Don Kinser. The Jackets also finished second in Regional play, and captured third place in the state tournament. During the season, the Red Jackets showed signs of becoming one of Georgia's all-time great prep basketball teams. A flu epidemic slowed them down, however, just before the state tournament. The Jackets had an overall record of 20 wins against 5 losses, and scored 1,445 points to their opponents' 1,050. This gave Jordan an average of 57.8 points per game while their opponents averaged 42 points per game. 94 Early in March Mr. Shaw presented to the 1951-52 basketball team the Bi-City trophy, the Third Place trophy of the State '52 A A. Tournament, and the All-Tournament team trophy to Jerry Till- man, Kay Slayden and John Bell. Also at this time he awarded All-Region medals to Jerry T.Mman Kay Slayden, and George Wilkinson. The other cup in the picture was the one presented to Coach Jones from the graduating seniors of this basketball team. '52 (Bci ksdbalL dOm iA. Mrs W. B Skipworth with Mr. R. H. He was very consistent at getting his 15 points per game. Kay played the outside on the team and was always a threat at driving in under the basket for a score. He was also a great rebounder. Kay ended a good high school basketball career by being chosen on the All-State Tournament Team and the Region One Team for the second year. Jordan will miss him for years to come GEORGE POPEYE WILKINSON George Wilkinson, better known to everyone at Jordan as Popeye , was the set-shot artist of this year's edition of the Red Jackets. He kept the de- fense loosened up by his long scoring shots. He was placed on the All-Region Team of '52. This is quite a feat, for he didn't come out for basketball until his junior year. Popeye is a senior and will be greatly missed by both coaches and fans next season JERE TILLMAN Jere was the playmaker of the Red Jackets this past season He was the captain, and he always encouraged the players whenever the going was rough. He was one of the best defensive men in the state, stealing the ball from the opposition many times during a game. Jere made the All-State Team and was placed on the All-Region Team for the third consecutive year. This was his last season to play, as he is a senior. BOBBY CHAMBLESS Although 5' 11 tall, Bobby was one of the best rebounding guards in the state. He did his share of the scoring in many games, but his main role was defense and taking the ball off the defen- sive backboard. During the state tournament, Bobby was one of the steadying influences on the team. He played well during all four games and was one of the reasons for the Red Jacket's third place victory. BILLY MEADOWS Billy was not one of the first five, but he was usually the first substitute sent into the game. He was always ready to play, worked hard during prac- tice, and always did a good job while he was in the game. Tommy was a fast guard with a great eye for the basket. He was a good rebounder and also a fair defensive man. He always scored his share of the points and could be counted on in a tight gr me. Although not a regular, Tommy saw a great deal of action. Illness forced him to miss eleven games, however, and this was a great handicap. JOIE REESE Joie, the 6' 3 Red Jacket center, was one of the most aggressive boys in the game. He played his best game of the year against Lanier, when he scored 26 points. He was a good rebounder and could be counted on to score his share of the points. JOHN BELL Being a newcomer to the squad this year, John Bell rose to great heights. He was a starter, off and on, all year mainly because he had not played the style of ball that the Red Jackets played. By the end of the year, he made a name for himself because of his sensational rebounding ability and made the All-State Tournament Team. DON KINSER Don was the big second-string center who showed flashes of brilliance at different times during the season. He is a good rebounder and team man. He is only a junior and is expected to carry most of the offensive load for the Red Jackets next year. L. C. MACQUIRTER L. C, captain elect for next year, saw a good deal of action this year as a second string forward. He has lots of spring in his legs and is a good back- board man. In Junior ROTC every student is given a course in the basic principles of rifle marksmanship and fires a course with the .22 caliber rifle designed to acquaint him with the finer points of rifle firing. The outstanding rifle shots of the ROTC unit and others in the ROTC who show a desire to go further in rifle marksmanship make up the Jordan High School Rifle Team. This team operates like any other school athletic team and fires in competition with other high schools in Columbus and such other teams as Clift High of Opelika, Lanier of Macon, and R. E. Lee of Thomaston. In addition to competing with these schools, the team has also competed in the National Randolph Hearst Trophy Match, and the Third Army Area Inter- scholastic Match, in which high schools all over the United States compete. 136 VtlajiAQJttAA Carol Carter Sue Hancock Martha Ann Meadows Patricia Harper Vivian Howell 137 Left to Right: Shirley Ellerbee, Marilyn Miller, Betty Jarvis, Eleanor Gilmer, George Wilkinson, Jeanette Jackson, Kay Slayden, Frances Streetmna, Cariotta Roth, Ann Adams.
