Inralnsms rn the ,Hllmes nf the ,jjnplm Exsirxct X Joplln IS a great mlmng dlstrlct of Southwest MIQSOUPI Wh1Ch IS known all over Amerlca DISCUSSIONS of the methods of operatlon are 1n volumes and can be easlly obtalned In fact the vshole hlstory of Joplm mcludlng her great ab1l1t1es of produclng ore have been prlnted tlme and agaln but the locallsms used 1n the Joplln mmlng dlstrlct are famlllar to only a few people even of those who l1ve ln th1S d1str1ct The expresslons used by the workmg man of the mlnes are unfamlllar to the proprletors themselves lf they have not spent a great deal of tlme 1n the ground among the men whlle they are at work Locallsms are expresslons used ln one d1str1ct and unfamlllar to other dlstrlcts The expresslons of the Joplln mlners are dlfferent from those of other dlstrlcts and so may be termed locallsms The locallsms of whlch I am about to tell or1g1nated about thlrtv five years ago These expresslons are app11ed to lmplements Whlch were necessary 1n the mmers work when speaking to one another and have been used to thls day and probably w1ll be used as long as mlnes are operated ln thls dlstrlct mlners are more or less accustomed to speak among themselwes ln terms that Wlll baffle the lnexperlenced Workman who may come to the mlnes Also dlfferent factorles of the Unlted States manufacture tools under dlfferent names than are used here General terms are used In the Joplln mlnes that are used some other places but w1th a dlfferent mean1ng The bottom of the shaft IS the sump Gold Mlnmg and copper m1n1ng are two mlnlng lndustrles that do not possess a sump because the mlners usually start drlftlng IH the slde of a h1ll or mountaln Wh1l9 the Joplin shafts are all started from the surface of the earth and dug stralght towards the center of lt When the shaft IS dug to the depth deslred the bottom of the shaft IS or w1ll be the sump At the bottom of the shaft IQ a roughly made platform on whxch to land tubs from the top of the shaft or for settlng tubs to be holsted to the surface Th1s IS known as the doghouse There IS a doghouse or dressmg room on top of the ground If thls IS not modernly equlpped wlth shower baths and lockers the mlners call thlg a doghouse lnstead of a lockerroom The cuttlngs taken out of the drlll holes when drllllng IS a pasty hke form of pulverlzed rock and IS called muck The muck before belng taken from the drlll holes xs dampened wlth water because lf IH powder form It would be breathed by the men and Settllng on thelr lungs mlght cause the dlsease known as mlners consumptlon When drlftmg away from the shaft the farthest polnt ln any dlrec tlon IS known as the face The face usually contams ore mmerals and lf It does not It 1s abandoned and another drlft 1s started IH a dlfferent dlrectlon Near thls face the ore IS shot dovsn ln a kmd of wav so as to make two ledges one projectlng about twenty or thlrty feet nearer the shaft than the other These two ledges are known as the top stope and the bottom stope and other tlmes the opposlte The reason for th1s 1 because the d1rt IS more easlly handled I fn qi raw Q -,l. , I lmmll ll an. Imp The tools used by the Joplln mlners xary a great deal ln name from those used ln dlfferent localltles For lnstance the spud IS used ln a great many localltles but for dlfferent purpose than used IH the Joplln dlstrlct The word spud to the Joplln mlner means a partlcular shaped sectlon of steel of hardened temper used for drllllng a hole IH soft ground The spud IS nex er used IH machlnes for drllllng but IS held by hand and drlven from force of blows upon the head of lt Thls tool IS never suc cessfully used for cuttlng holes ln rock as lt would merely become blunt before cuttlng a fractlon of an lnch ln S0l1d materlal Another useful tool IS called a gad Thls tool IS used to drlve ln a crack to pry down boulders when It IS dlfflcult to shoot them down The last two tools I lust mentloned may be classed as hand tools as they are held bv the hand Whlle belng drlven but the term hand steel usually refers to short steel dr1lls used for cuttlng holes 1Ht0 the face when It ls hard and unhandy to use the steam drlll For tflmmlng the roof of dangerous boulders and loose slabs there IS also another tool used ThlS tool IS a long plece of plpe flattened at one end ln such a way as to form a blade Thls makes It llghter and more easlly handled than lf It were made of solld materlal Such a tool as thls IS known as a prod pole After the hole IH whlch the dr1lls are cuttlng becomes full of muck and the drlll IS hard to turn the drlll IS removed and an lnstrument called a spoon 19 thrust 1nto the hole to remove the muck Th1S tool IS a long DISCS of steel five to seven feet ln length and about one half of an lnch square Wlth a narrow cup shaped formatlon at one end The other end IS polnted so It can be used ln plcklng the muck loose ln the hole A blower IS used for removlng the muck from the drlll holes ln mlnes where steam or compressed alr IS used for drllllng power When loadlng the holes for shootlng the d1rt from a compact folm a long pole about one lnch ln dlameter IS used for pushlng the dynamlte lnto the proper place ln the drlll hole Th1S pole IS made of wood because lf an 1ron or steel tamplng bar were used and came 1nto contact wlth the Sld9S of the hole Wh1Ch sometlmes contalns fllnt formatlon lt would cause a spark to fly whlch mlght cause an exploslon So thls tool IS never con sldered a tamplng bar lf It IS made of any materlal other than wood For holstlng the dlrt to the surface a large bucket llke form IS used Th1S lnstrument wlll hold from seven hundred to fifteen hundred pounds of m1ll d1rt accordlng to SIZE Some of the mlners call thls a tub and others call It a can but ln each mlne one of the two names IS permanently estab llshed Durlng the process of drllllng long lengths of steel are contlnually golng up and down the shaft These long dr1lls are dlfflcult to handle when lowerlng or holstlng more than one at the tlme Wh1Ch IS necessary where steam drllls are used So a long narrow can IS used for thls purpose Th1s was g1N en the name of steel can by the mlners Gettlng the dlrt 1nto the tub IS a necessary functlon when the men are worklng by the tub They therefore use a good shovel knowm as a scoop It may also be called a shovel but the word shovel takes a good many forms of tools for dlfferent klnds of work lnto llne So the mlners for thelr partlcular use of work gaxe thls speclal shovel the name of scoop In modern t1m9S the mlners have found lt to be more economlcal to use QXDIOSIVCS ln loosenlng the dlrt than by uslng the power of mans lil ll r, ,Q . fl p .
