Yes slr I am excused he replled and trembhng he left the room Marsh xx as forced to be absent from school the next three days so It was not untll hls return that hls loss was dlscovered No trace could be found of the products of h1s hard labor by lnqulry or search so he lnformed Prof West The Prmclpal was enraged at th1s report for he had read part of the notes and consldered them excellent He concluded the mtervlew wlth Marsh bv saymg If they hax e been mahclouslv taken I w1ll use every means posslble to recover them and show no lemency to the gullty person At th1s Marsh felt more confident that they would be found but stlll It was dlfhcult to reconclle hlmself to thelr loss However next mormng was the dav for chapel and the valedlctouan would be announced Thls was uppermost 1n h1s mmd When the school had assembled 1n the audxtorlum Marsh found hlmself 1n full VIEW of Mar1or1e also Bob who was seated b9S1d6 her Bob lmme dlately attempted to say somethmg to Mar1or1e but was sllenced by Prof Weeks A long program followed an lnstructne and approprlate speech was dellvered by Dr Moran Dr Moran was a forceful speaker wlth an ex c llent vo1ce and never fa1led to 1nst1ll somethlng worth knowxng lnto the mlnds of hlS llsteners H1s sub1ect was partlcularlv adapted to hls audlence and the ma1n thought was to be on the square wlth your fellow man He made several Sl'I'1k1Hg 1llustrat1ons to brlng out th1s pomt under whlch Bob wmced notlceably After th1s speech Prof West slowly arose and made lt known that the valedlctorlan had been chosen After what seemed endless remarks he slowlv drew from h1s vest pocket a paper He ad1usted hls glasses and scru l1H1Z9d the paper closely After clearmg hls throat he began The Facultv have declded upon the follovs mg puplls havmg the four hlghest averages One could have heard a pm drop Marshall s heart leaped vlolently and Seraphlna had struck a natural pose for once although qulte uncon SC1OuSly Her glasses hung on one ear her mouth was open and her hands clutched the slde of the desk nervously Prof West contxnued The valedlctorlan IS Marshall Wells Applause resounded through the aud1tor1um Marsh breathed a slgh of rel1ef as he reallzed that h1s hard study and ambltlon were rewarded He now cast a glance 1n Mar1or1e s dlrectlon and was rewarded wlth a smlle from her as she half turned m her seat A scowl on Bob s face was also perceptlble as h1s name was read the last one Marshall s confidence was ' ' 7 . . a .
