If Marjorie felt any preference to Marsh over Bob she was somewhat reluctant to admit it Why Cecile said Seraphina how could you ever stand such an un interesting person as Marsh You should have heard me refuse him the last time he wanted to take me home from church This remark caused a smile to lighten the countenance of Marjorie and actually provoked a snicker from Cecile By this time the boys had arrix ed at the schoolyard Bob saw the girls first and yoklngly remarked Don t you thlnk Mariorie and Seraphina would run a close race for the keenest girl in school 7 Seraph evidently holds you high in her estimation replied Marsh Bob turned red but remained silent Here they met the girls and a friendly greeting ensued Seraphina 1n attempting to execute one of her most graceful poses one that she had long tried to perfect accidentally knocked one of Mariorie s books from her arm Immediately Bob seized this opportunity and politely restored her book and walked on a little in ad Vance with her Upon seeing the result of the accident Seraphina let her books clatter to the pavement at Marshall s feet He could only replace the scattered books which he did slowly Oh how nice of you said Seraph exultant at the success of her stall My' I feel so nervous this morning won t you please carry them to mv room for me? Now don t say no for I know you have time you are al ways so early You know I heard Aunt Almire and Mrs Jenkins talking that you Poor Marsh' Seraphlna had evidently forgotten her recent remark about him Monroe was seized with a violent attack of coughing when he perceived Marshall s ridiculous predicament and Mar1or1e turned 1ust in time to see Marsh and Seraph ascending the steps with a look of half amusement and half astonishment Upon reachlng the hall Marsh stopped not wishing to be seen by pu pils loitering there However several curious groups made him the center of attraction and to cap the climax Prof West entered the hall and upon seeing so many pupils doing nothing made Marsh and Seraph an example by reprimanding them for loitering in the hall After this unfortunate episode Marsh saw his chances with Mar1or1e fading away To be called down for talking in the hall with Seraphina Murphy 'and what a complimentary greeting I will receive in the school paper SOl1lOqLl1ZGd Marsh while slowly walking to his room Bob cer tainlv walked over me today he thought Nevertheless I will not give up all hope Next morning at chapel Prof West announced that the Senior grades were being completed and the valedictorian would be announced at the nevct chapel He also announced that the annual debate between the Wal lace and Lowell Schools would be held soon and the pupils wishing to represent the school would be tried out nest week This gaxe Marsh a chance to distinguish himself because for several weeks he had been work ing up notes for a substantial argument and would have them in presenta ble form This last announcement set Bob to thinking fast If Marsh won this distinction and possibly the valedlctorianship he might gain confidence Q 7 K 61 ' 77 . now restored and he walked through the hall with Marjorie after chapel not caring if Prof West did see them At noon Dr Moran dined with Bob s father He certalnly must haxe used his morning sub1ect for an after dinner speech for Bob returned to school in a downcast mood Upon learning of the lost notes Prof Weeks related the mcldent he had witnessed ww hen he saw Bob m Marshall s room Thls threw a light of susplclon on Bob As a consequence Prof West at the height of his se Verity put Bob through a Flgld cross examination upon his return at noon The weight of the speech by Dr Moran reinforced by the confusing ques tions caused Bob to confess his guilt Seraphlna was a sllent but attentive llstener to this confession and the entire school was soon in possession of the whole aH'a1r Upon the recovery of his notes Marsh won the preliminary debate in the contest and incidentally Mar1or1e was the victor over the other girls This meant that they would represent the school ID the annual debate The dance was but a few days away now and Bob declded to ask Mar 1or1e for her company ahead of all others He determlned to attend church the following Sunday night and ask her after the dismissal of services Marsh was the early bird and attended church Sunday morning While es corting Mar1or1e to her home after church Marsh was gratified by her con senting to his accompanying her to the dance He was further gratified by meeting Bob who was 1ust leaving his home After a careful ten mlnutes of consideration of his conduct of late Bob declded that smce Marsh had proven his superlorlty IH every respect hls chancess had diminished into 1nv1s1b1l1ty Pk sk Four nights later two happy couples wended their wav slowly home ward from the dance after an enjoyable evening The couples were Marsh and Mar1or1e and a short distance 1n the rear Seraphlna and Isaac A Cohen whom Seraph had successfully entrapped and fascnlated by her be W1tChlI1g charms WILLIAM CURRAH Qllem liemrnxscrnsres SPECIAL reunion of the B Clan had been called for some mysteri ous business the members knew not what They were seated tailor fashion before the open fire in the room of Margaret Thornton teacher of expression at Ward Hall entertaining themselves by local gosslp After the first hour of vocal rapld fire Margaret suggested that each one recall an lncldent of thelr former school days or tell of thelr life since they had graduated from Hlgh School Billy or Fern Nicholson was called on first and after her usual pre l1m1nar1es of blowing her hair out of her eyes changing a mckel s worth of gum from the left Jaw to the right she began Well girls you all know as well as I that I had always intended to teach demostic SCICHCG but alas' my dreams have been in vam I might as well be frank about It my lntentlons were to make practlcal use of my knowledge and not to teach You all know my motto was The way to a y . . . c , . . . . , 1 V , . . .
