MY HEADLIGHT BOUGHT a headllght a perfectly good headllght made of mckel and fashloned after the latest pattern Oswald the man who took care of my machlne when I was away seemed to have a great mterest ln the Cdl and dld all 1n hls pow er to make me satlsfled w1th xt You know he H1 gued you w1ll nex er know the 1oy of motorlng t1ll you r1de at nlght It IS the hnest sensat1on 1mag1nable to gllde swlftly and smoothly over th wlndmg country roads w1th a powerful llght to make the way clear H1s ilowlng language got the better of my ludgment and so I ordered a blg searchllght When the llght came Oswald admsted It properly and attached the prestolxte tank on the runnmg board The llght ltself was made of mckel It had a streamllme effect so much admlred by motorlsts I don t exactly understand what a streamlme effect 19 but Oswald Sald the llght had lt and I was glad It was 1n style All the other flttlngs of the car were brass Somehow the llght d1dn t look 1ust rlght We could have gllded lt but It was mckel and I pald more because of the mckel so we declded to let It alone Oswald told me that lf I had two llghts on the dashboard lust com mon o1l lamps made of mckel and on the same pattern as the blg llght that every thlng would harmomze So I got the two llttle o1l lamps made of mckel We dldnt need them at all for the blg llght was enough but the whole car looked better It was a llttle car lust a one cyhnder Cadll lac All lt was used for was to haul me to and from the mmes and occa slonally to take us r1d1ng on Sunday afternoons The upkeep was small Ils lwht welght was easy on the tlres and 1ts one cyllnder used a mlnlmum of gasollne Of course lt couldn t go fast or cllmb steep hllls We dldnt want It to do that We were used to It and were perfectly satlsfied For a whlle we emoyed our new llght It was very nlce to be sure but we grew tlred of r1d1ng at nlght All was well enough at mght when we d1d r1de for no one could see the llght ltQ6lf But 1n the daytlme lt looked as lf lt would overbalance the machlne It was entlrely out of proportlon wlth the rest of the equlpment Exen the three llghts d1d not do away Wlth the lncongrulty They made the car have a half equlpped look Brass and nlckel don t go well to gcther so I had all the brass trlmmmgs taken off and mckel plated I thought I was done then but the upholstery of the car was black Oswald told me that black upholstery dld not match mckel trlmmlngs so I had all of the perfectly good black leather taken off and French gray put on It looked hke a common lead color to me but Oswald called It French gray and sald that xt was styllsh Th1s new color was too llght because It caught dust and dlrt But we thought we would l1ke It after whlle and consequently trled to put up w1th If we were to have a car equlpped llke the new models we ought to do thc thlng up rlght so under Oswald s dlrectlon I had the llttle Cadlllac overhauled palnted French gray and put 1nto good order Oswald s1nce he had been worklng for me had saved qulte a llttle money and once told me when he found a good second hand car he would buy lt He knew the worth of a car and walted patxently for a bargaln Q0 as I took off the old p1eces of the car Oswald was always w1ll1ng to take them at a good dlscount for they would come 1n handy when he got hls machlne I I . , 7 !
