And was not Hans probably on h1s way to see her at that very t1me'? And oh how Hans d1d desplse tears and red eyes' After Katrlna s departure the s1lence contmued unt1l her mother came hurrymg 1HtO the room w here her husband sat Qhe was hummmg a llttle tune as she entered but It dled on her llps as she recognlzed her husband s mood Qhe was a brlsk httle woman and was xery much loxed bv all of her daughter s frlends because of her pleasant frxendly ways One had only to look at her eyes to see that she and Katrlna were mother md daugh ter for they were the same dark blue and twlnkled ln the same mlschley ous fashlon But as she looked at her husband the twmkle dled and as she glanced from h1m to the httle brown ball on the table and back agam a look of comprehenslon and of ss mpathy took the place of the laughter and followed m qU1Ck successlon by many others Then she too turned and hurrled from the room for the same reason that Hans was comlng soon and It would never 1n the world do for h1m to find Katrma s mother IH tears or w 1th slgns of them IH her eyes Hans was a stalwart son of Mynheer von Hydenbeck Mynheer Wles ner s most 1nt1mate frlend and compamon He was also the very fortunate young man chosen by Katrma s father to be her future husband wh1ch good fortune he fully reallzed When Hans really d1d come he d1d not seem to notlce the sxgns of weep mg much to Katrlna s rellef Not long after h1s arrlyal Katrma heard her father and h1s frlend go out to the garden and so se17ed that opportu mtv to show the DTGCIOUQ new tullp bulb to Hans Of course Hans was duly lmpressed and after they had looked at lt long and earnestly thmkmg how much It meant to Mynheer Wlesner Hans put h1s arms about Katrma and wlth her head on h1s shoulder they wept together Katrlna could not posslbly have told why she was weeplng all she reallzed was that Hans her own Hans who desplsed tears was crymg and better stlll was makmg no secret of It Y 96 ak vk Pls Mynheer s dream has actually been 1eal1zed for lt was true that no one 1n the whole of Holland had a tuhp hke th1s one wh1ch came from Amerlca For four years now the tuhp had multlphed very rapldly and Mynheer Wlesner had great beds of them 1n h1s gardens No one 1n Holland had ever seen a tul1p hke th1s one It grew xerv tall and slender and had a blossom very very dlfferent from any other known tullp But lt must be a tulip Mynheer reasoned the bulb proxes that' Its dlfference only en hances 1tS value to My nheer WICQHQF for It makes h1s dlscovery all the more Wonderful A Y ! know IS the valley of obl1v1on and thls shade Peter Srnlth wlll forget all about ltself and 1n that way we w1ll be saved That IQ why the next day a motor boat met the shade of Peter Smlth mstead of an antlquated scow and that IQ why all traces of that partlcular shade were lost for It was 1n the Valley of Obhvlon That 1s why when Mephlsto wlth a w1nk asked hxm later what became of Peter Smlth Charon replled wlth a w1nk the match of Mephlsto s I should worry C M 5 THE KATRINA TULIP UFI' Puff Puff murmured Mynheer von Hydenbeck s merschaum Puff Puff Puff answered Mynheer Wxesners merschaum as the two prosperous Dutchmen sat sllently regardmg the preclous new bulb that only that mornmg had arr1ved from Amerxca carefully packed Wlth other rare but not entlrely new bulbs Dame Iortune lt seemed had always been partlcularly fond of Myn heer Wlesner and so at scarcely mlddle age he had retlred from actlve buslness l1fe and had taken up h1s one hobby the cultlvatlon of flowers es peclally of the tuhp so dear to the Hollander s heart In the spaclous gar dens at the back of h1s house were great beds of tullps among wh1ch were some very rare speclmens Yet he was contmually strlvmg to obtaln those that were st1ll more rare and h1s dream was exther to obtam or to cultlvate a SPQCIGS of the flower entlrely new one that he mlght choose a name for and call h1S very own And now at last It seemed as far as he could ascer tam that hls dream was about to be fulfilled for that very mornmg thls new bulb had come from a large seed store 1n New York and even w1th h1s wldely acknowledged authorlty on the var1et1es of tullps Mynheer WIGQHSF could not 1dent1fy It The bulb was practlcally the same SIZE and shape as any ordmary tullp but It was of a glossy golden brown color and the outer coat was rather loose and papery and small though 1t was lt loomed up very large IH the eyes of Mynheer Wlesner as the reallzatlon of hls fondest dreams As he sat regarding It h1s eyes fllled wlth tears Were these tears of Joy or ant1c1pat1on of the poss1b1l1ty contamed ln the hldden ldentlty of the l1ttle brown ob1ect lylng on the table or d1d they sprmg from some other un known reason V Even Mynheer von Hydenbeck wept But whether hls were tears of Joy sorrow or sympathy 1S 1I1blgI11flC3.Ilt before the 1dent1ty of the all lmportant bulb You must know that all th1s tlme the merschaums only have held con versatlon After sllence had relgned supreme for at least half an hour Katrma Mynheer Wlesner s slxteen year old daughter came 1nto the room carrymg a tray laden w1th del1c1ous l1ttle cakes and home brewed beer These she proceeded to serve to the two men Katrlna could not have lald an lndlsputable clalm to beauty but her features were rather small and xery regular and her expresslon was verv sweet She had a wealth of hght han' and a palr of blue eyes that danced so wlth mlschlef and happmess that one could not help llklng her Wlth all thmgs consldered she gave promlse of becomlng a very attractlve woman In compllance wlth her fathers request she wore a short full 1 1 ' . . . ,, . . .
