Being an efficient secretary, she never has an idle mom- entg nevertheless, when she meets students in the hall, she always greets them with a cheerful hello. As there must be an organization of knowledge on the part of the student, so must there be an organization of methods whereby the student gains knowledge. At the top of this organiza- tion of methods, we observe Mr. Goff, jones- boro Public Schools Superintendent, a good and gracious gentleman, who has been in this school system for twenty-four years. He works diligently to bring the best and most recent forms of edu- cation to Mr. Goff obtained his B.S. Degree from Ar- kansas College in Batesvile, Arkansas, and his Masteris Degree from the University of Mis- souri. Active in educational organizations, Mr. Goff served as president of the Superintendents' Organization of Arkansas and is now serving as board member-at-large of the Arkansas Education Association. Always striving assiduously to complete his tasks, Mr. john Nor- red holds the office of Jonesboro Special School District Account- ant. Besides fulfilling the many tasks required of him as account- ant, he also serves as Jonesboro City Treasurer. Ara: V x ii. Fixx 2, fiii 'f-ll ' M School Board officers are Vance Scurlock, presidentg J. Hardy Little, vice-presidentg Al Kopert, secretaryg Lloyd Goff, superintendent of schools. The members of the Jonesboro School Board have devoted much of their own time, without remuneration to attending to the problems of the schools of Jonesboro. Under the administration of these seven civic-minded persons, many accomplish- ments have been made in the expansion and improvement of our schools. Members of the School Board are J. Hardy Little, Lloyd Goff, Vance Scurlock, Al Kopert, Gene Brown, Marvin Sanderson, and Larry Darouse. Yes, students find a variety of things to do in their English courses-reading, listening, writing, acting, publishing, speaking-and the prerequisite of each is thinking. The new in- terest in vocabulary is encouraging, for lan- guage is important to world understanding in this scientific age. xx CWA 'Tl-on NW? Wonder if this English student will find the mistake? One of the most modern techniques of learning, that of the use of private study booths, microphone, earphones, tape recorder, and record player, is being demonstrated in this Spanish Class. Being the first fully equipped laboratory in the state, it aids students in speaking and understanding a foreign language. I3 In a well planned, fully equipped kitchen, home economics students, under the direction of Mrs. Moon, turn out' many tempting dishes. Cooking, however, does not top the list of subjects included in the course. The girls also show an expert hand whens, it comes to sewing. Many of the clothes in their ward- robes are the products of their own labor. Upon completion of the course, the girls are well versed in the art of home economics. KATIE MOON, B.S.E. at Henderson State Teachers' College With the help of Mrs. Moon and the sewing class, Linda Foster designs, cuts out, and sews an outfit of beauty. Wonder what tasty dish these girls are whipping up now? Through experimentation these home eco- nomic students prepare themselves to be capable homemakers of tomorrow. rl I I V m,,Q,,,W,.,. ,, .7 3555 If S iii 12'- SGI ffsijlff ,,,,, Q Q 5 S I Q! if W! 9 wi , .sw.W. f ,fr , i M -f L Mm k,., , V 1 , ., ,. -Ig A , If My Wm , E2 W ' L i x N, .4 A 5 M 1? 1 1 ,. iii.. ,,.. ,. in S Q H k '4 4 X X1 Re ff' x 4 MM V Ev W A mg 1 'W J' , , ,fx 1 A 1+ ff 4 Wm, Y iawf5Qm,, wg - Mm- ,vwmgl-f W? 5 ga H 1 . Deadlines! Those hair-raising words are just a part of what the Hurricane Staff has to con- tend with throughout the year. Four times a year these words haunt the minds of the staff members. By assiduous study and work, somehow or other the deadlines are met and the book is assembled. Many hours of thought and work go together to make the Hurricane yearbook what it is. Editors of separate sections get together to discuss their layouts. Standing are Cecil Barnett, sports editorg Spencer Elrod, assistant sports editor, and Cheryl Wall, assistant feature editor. The members were chosen at the end of their junior year on the basis of scholarship, character, leadership, and serv- ice. Trying to vary their program to cover all these qualities, the honor society proved to be a very versatile organization. The annual citizenship week was outstanding with a dif- ferent theme for each day. Highlighting the week was an assembly in which prizes were awarded to the students who did the best job of cleaning up our school. A check was presented at Christmas to the Salvation Army. A banquet, gift to the school, pay assembly, and induction of new members were other activities sponsored by the organization. The students, with the help of their sponsor, Mrs. Gregson, carried out an active program of work and play during the past school year. When thinking of enthusiastic people, one natur- ally thinks of the members of the vF.T.A. The various programs presented during the club meet- ings were ample evidence of this fact. On several occasions guest speakers gave talks on the varied fields of education. Sinse this club is made up of students who want to be teachers, the programs were very beneficial in persuading them into the teaching vocation. Throughout the year they continued to be one of the most active clubs on the campus. As in the years before, the Jonesboro chapter of the junior Classical League placed high on the list with honors. Their candidate for Halloween Queen came in third place, netting several dollars for UNICEF. A very outstanding task undertaken by the club was to remodel completely the Latin class room. They painted a beautiful mural on the wall, which depicts Latin lan- guage, architecture, and customs from early Roman times to modern times. Homecoming display, Christmas parade float, and annual Latin Club Banquet were all scheduled dur- ing the year's activities. 1 The Christmas Fairy was the theme chosen for the Christmas Parade Float. This club is made up of students who are interested in library work. Library Club members are extremely helpful in keeping our li- brary in good condition. They mend worn books, help Mrs. Wilbourn during rush periods, keep library books in the right order on the shelves, and perform many other services. These experiences they gain in library work will help the students 'who want to become librarians. These students, as well as those not want- ing to become librarians, will benefit from these experiences by learning to be system- atic, accurate in detail work, and thorough in organization. As librarian, Mrs. Wfilbourn supervises the checking out of machines to Mrs. Nail, Mrs. Brown, and Mrs. Gray. The library has all types of audio- visual aids which are available to the teachers for their class work. Class take advantage of the excellent facilities in the library. 57 906 ' csfafe The eighteen girls from Jonesboro High School, who had the honor of attending Girls' State, experienced a week of learning and enjoyment, They met and made friends with girls from all over Arkansas. The total num- ber of girls who attended Girls' State was seven hundred fifty-eight. Every one of these girls received learning which would benefit Americans of all ages. They were greatly en- lightened as to how our State and Federal Governments are directed. All the girls believe that the purpose of Girls' State, to give the girls a broader under- standing of our American government, was definitely fulfilled. They agreed that the greatest experience received was a feeling of patriotism and honor for the flag. Boys' csfafe The main theme stressed at Boys' State was Americanism. For one week the seventeen boys who represented Jonesboro not only enjoyed the festivities but also gained knowledge about our American Government. Attending Boys' State were approximately seven hundred boys from all over the state. Each day the boys attended talks by speakers from various civic positions. Mayors, city council members, presi- dents of civic organizations, and officers in the American Legion gave their views on Americanism. One thing that the boys ap- preciated was- that each speaker gave them an opportunity to ask questions and to have discussions on the theme of each talk. Since all the boys were firm believers in all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy, many hours were spent in recreation. The varied program consisted of swimming, football, wrestling, and horse shoes. Boys who attended Boys' State: FIRST ROW: David MacLeod, Billy Boothe, Lloyd Tucker, Bobby Easley. SECOND ROW: H. A. Being considered one of the best cheering lines in the state is enough reward for the long hours of practice. The girls were recently made honorary members of the Club of Jones- boro High. M., e,.ef-- - COACHING STAFF-Buddy Bell and Doug Cobb The 1959-60 football season was one to be long remembered. The determma tion of the team, plus the inspiration of the coaches, lead to an all-out effort to make the season a successful one The spirit of the team came through gallantly when they showed the Blytheville Chicks the hidden power and drive they possessed by coming through in the fourth quarter to win by three touchdowns. In the years to come, these experiences will become happy memories in the minds of the team and the student body. ik Ai? .
