In the Shades Valley game, the highlights were Walls' BO-yard run and Rosser's blocking on sweeps for Walls, he said. ln the Ensley game, it would be Snow's fine playing in the first half, and Brock's pass to Cargile to put us back in the lead. And who can forget Hancock's 80-yard kick-off return against Woodlawn, or his catch for a 59-yard touchdown pass against Phillips, or Pitts' diving catch ofa 52-yard pass in the same game? ln the Ramsay game, Jerry Barron tackled the quarterback twice in a row for a ten-yard loss, l recall that Moon was in on 19 tackles during the Butler game. The Banks game was a heart-stopper all the way, but the determined drive by Martin the last few seconds and the extra point kick will be remembered for a long time. We had a great season, and l'm proud that Jones Valley moved up from last year's No 5 place to No. 3 in 1967. Bob Harris Named Me+ro Coach of Year. Wildly cheering Brownies crowded around the bus as our team left for Huntsville to meet Butler in the State Play-Off, Spirit was high: and the entire community showed its appreciation of a fine team as some three thousand people motored to Huntsville to attend the game, Later that day, four Greyhound busses parked in front of the school and excited students climbed aboard. Light rain and cloudy skies failed to damp- en Brownie spirits. A fitting climax to a successful season is the naming of our own Coach Harris by The Birmingham News - Age Herald and the coaches of the metro- politan area as Metro Coach of the Year. i r I 4 --H f-n-vgg,aauYw.,a.:uggg.:-.r,.,,eu.a:a-J..e:,- W.: .. it V:-,K an 1. wr me .frm .1 , an ' K , .is ,rr .,..,f,Q,r, mf, - , , M, . , L 4 H , A Y f JU , ai My ,,,, r 1 .ri gl., , ,, , A4777-W 4 Y g V, Q vluguwjnfkkkwr Season Openers Deousnve Vnciorg Disappoiniing Tie S HADES VALLEY Determined Brownies drew vengeance on the Shades Valley Mountaineers in the opening game of the season with a 27-0 victory, The Brownies showed a powerful defense and a lightning-fast backfield with Brock and Walls as standouts. Brock completed ll out of 18 passes, Walls showed his versatility as he rushed for 127 yards and threw a touchdown pass to Hancock. Because of his outstanding performance, Walls was voted Back of the Week by the Birmingham Post-Herald. EN SLEY Two weeks of hard preparation preceded the Ensley game. Fresh from a victory over Shades Valley, Brownies wanted to make a good showing in their first city competition. Ensley was highly favored, but the Brownies were prepared and domi- nated the game from the opening kickoff to the final play. Jones Valley drove to an early lead and kept it until late in the game when Ensley scored on their second freak scoring play. J. V. quickly came back to tie the game 22-22. Brownies visii lwo Fairs for iwo victories Jones Valley Brownies went to Fair- field to play a team which was unde- feated and which had not been scored upon. The night was long as there was no score until fourth quarter. The Fairfield Tigers were first to put points on the scoreboard, but their extra point try was wide. Strong Brownies came right back and took the ball into the end zone on a Brock-to- Cargile pass. James Pitts added the PAT, and the Brownies led 7 to 6. Time ran out and the Brownies left the field with a 2-0-1 record. Our Brownies, making sure that over-confi- dence wasn't a factor in the game, handed Walker County a 40-16 defeat. Jones Valley and Walker County met at the State Fair in a free-admission game sponsored by the Fair authorities. Jones Valley's first team didn't see much ac- tion. Fullback Jimmy Martin, halfbacks Hassel Walls and Ricky Hancock put points on the score board. For the third week in a row, Brock con- nected to Cargile for a score. The whole team looked good as they intercepted passes and re- covered fumbles all night long. In the second quarter, Joe Moon intercepted a pass and returned it for 15 yards and 6 points. Pitts added four extra points. Happiness is winning gour Homecoming Game' Battle cry of the week was revenge, and that is what the Brownies had in mind as they went to meet Phillips at Legion Field. This was Jones Valley's homecoming game, and ex- citement was high. After the opening kick-off, it was Jones Val ley all the way as the Brownies marched for a touchdown in the first minutes of play. About midway the second quarter, the first team re- tired to the bench with a 34-O lead and let the second team play. As the final whistle blew, the Brownies left the field with a 36-21 victory, which made the homecoming crowd very happy. Brownies oelebraie Wesi End, Woodlawn ,mass we ,gt 5 fi' vioiories. Coach Robert Haggard, who coached at Iones Valley last year, brought a determined West End team to meet the Brownies at Fair Park. The Brownies, anxious to show Coach Hag- gard they hadn't forgot what he had taught them took charge of the game from the opening kick- off. Led by the fine passing of Ralph Brock and the excellent receiving of James Pitts and Jerry Cargile, the Brownies walked away with a 27- 13 victory over the Lions. Going into the sixth game of the season, the Brownies had but one thought: Beat Wood- lawn! Beat them they did with a score of 33- 13. Jones valley was able to give almost every- one a chance to display his abilities. Quarter- back Brock had a superb night as he scored on runs of l and 47 yards and completed touchdown passes to Walls and Pitts. Hancock was not to be outdone as he took the kick-off ofthe second half and put his fan- tastic speed to work on an 80-yard race to pay dirt. Second-half push brings vioiorg over Ramsay l E Jones Valley displayed championship form in their come-from-behind victory over Ramsay. With three minutes left in the first half, the Brownies woke up to find themselves thirteen points behind. They decided to do something about it. Jimmy Martin bulled the last seven yards of a 65- yard drive,- and Pitts added the extra point to send the Brownies to the dressing room 6 points behind at the half. The second half was commanded by Jones Valley as they picked up 108 yards rushing to Ramsay's 13 yards. Brock's passing to Hancock picked up two second-half touchdowns, and Pitts added both PAT's. Brownies left the field with a 7-O-l record. 84 For the past two years, the Jones Valley- Banks game has played a major role in the State standings. Our defeat of Banks last year caused them to lose a berth in the State Play-Off, and Banks hoped to retaliate by defeating us. A determined Brownie squad planned to collect the reward of a winning season--a State Play-Off berth. The Brownies won this place in one of the THOSE exciting games this school has ever seen. Both teams fought hard all night, al- though Banks picked up 6 points in the third quarter. With only a few minutes left in the game, Valley found itself 82 yards away from a touchdown. Brownies knew then it was time for the tough to get going! With the help of Jimmy Martin's leadership, they picked up those 82 yards. Martin collected 44 of them, with the last one being a one- yard drive for a touchdown. With 28 sec- onds left the game, Pitts added the winning extra point. That extra point gave Jones Valley its place in the State Play-Off. Valleg has irouble wiih iake-off in Rockei Cuig Jones Valley Brownies, after a great season, made it to the State Playoffs. The elimina- tion rounds were in Montgomery and Huntsville, with Lanier playing Guntersville and I. V. tak- ing on the Rebels of Butler. Although the distance from Birmingham to Huntsville is about one hundred miles, loyal Zfwf, f 2 ta Brownie fans showed up in large numbers. They - s N felt a bit ill at ease since standing and cheering ,Q 1 X were verboten. C .ft 31 A valiant effort by the J. B-Team expects a better sea- son next year as there are many members of the squad who will be returning. Brownie Cagers hustle to make 1967-68 Jones Valley's basketball team had a winning season in '67-'68--at least that is the way it stands as we go to press. After a slow start, the Brownies bounced back to win the West End Tournament and five in a row. Basketball players are: Mikul Leonard, Jimmy Rogers, Joe Moon, John Creel, Ralph Brock, Mike Lancaster, Hassell Walls, Ricky Phillips, Johnny Burgess. Joe Sexton coaches the basketball team. l 88 fa N........ Qi if E 5 -3 ,, Q g Q .H F R 'F we Q, 1, ,f I 2 . LZ I Q if Us twii.. ,, la 5 55 fs I 4' it M354 Q . Ny I 43 IV 9, ,rf , K -A?
