There is a mad rush to find a seat on the county and transit buses which bring Valley students to Phillips. Valley, ' Tis of Thee We Sing Page 2 1 ' Foreword This is the story of Jones Valley in its forty-second year. P ' Tis true that adversity has many faces, and so, while the ' 63 BROWNIE tells a story of hardship and inconvenience, it also tells a story of unsurpassed determination and loyalty. ' Tis a story of Brownies at Powderly and at Phillips. For some, ' tis the story of a daily eighteen-mile trip across town, of after-school hours cheerfully given in order to maintain an athletic program, a band, and glee club. ' Tis for all of us a story of great victory. Our suc- cessful campaign to raise money to rebuild our school is familiar to all Birmingham. ' Tis a story of Brownies im- patient to come home. Finally, ' tis ' the acceptance of the challenge handed to us by hundreds of Brownies before us: To maintain the high standards begun May the gold never tarnish The black ne ' er grow dim Till the goal of our hopes has been won. As two of the hardest workers in the campaign :o raise $200,000 Mr. and Mrs. Driggers were given the honor of turning the first shovel of ground with a new silver- plated shove. The shovel was presented to our school by Couse Construction Company of Chicago. . . . Of a principal who had a vision Page 4 . . . Of a community that refused to let our school die! Sunday, October 7, was victory day for determined Brownies when ground was broken for our new school. Outstanding dignitaries from city and county attended. Left to right: Mrs. A. E. Driggers, Mayor Art Hanes, Supt. Theo Wright, Mrs. Gordon Kendricks, Mr. A. E. Driggers, Mr. J. T. Whitten, M rs. William Burgess, County Supt. Kermit Johnson, Commissioner Eugene Connor. Page 5 Louise Arthur, a senior; Mr. James bnuth, who was on the original land-purchasing committee for Jones Valley High School; and Margaret Burgess, a fresh- man, were one in spirit at groundbreaking ceremonies. Two short months later. Rose Dodd and Pat Farris are amazed at the progress which has been made on the new building. The construct- ion superintendent reports that never before has he received such cooperation. When suppliers learn that It ' s for Jones Valley, orders are given priority. Page 6 Cheerleader Gail Owens led Patsy Owen, a third grader in Jones Valley Elementary, in a victory yell at the ground- breaking. Because many people worked so hard. Patsy will have the privilege of attending school in a new building. . . Of loyalty — past, present, and future. Page 7 . . . Of an enthusiastic student body For the most part. Brownies at Phillips cheerfully accepted the left-over lockers and rooms which chased them from basement to third floor in three - minute sprints. Page At the bonfire before the homecoming game with Minor, Gail Edmondson and Bonnie Saunders super- vise the training of future cheerleaders Pamela Mann and Connie Traffenstedt. . . .Of Faculty and Curriculum Activities Organizations Athletics Features Classes Advertisers 11 1 p— 37 - 51 S 71 81 89 127 Page 9 With loving gratitude, we, the Brownie Staff of ' 63, dedicate our annual to MRS. Thomas trophy; by instrucfing our cheerleaders who have won first and second places in statewide clinics; by acting as chairman of our clean-up campaigns, homecoming events, and football ban- quets; by playing to win, yet at the same time instilling good sportsmanship. ' mo Dreams do come true! As we go to press, we have high hopes of being in our new building before the year ends. On May 13, 1963, representatives of Ensley, Shades Valley, Wood- lawn, John Carroll, Phillips and Jones Valley were assembled at Reid ' s Chapel on the Howard Col- lege Campus for the city -wide Spanish contest. The contest was composed of dictation, compre- hension, and original speeches in Spanish Guest speakers were from Mexico and Cuba. Contestants were enter- tained at a tea, and then the winners were announced. First-place winner was Betsy Blount from Ensley, second place was Linda Parker from Jones Valley, and Hon- orable Mention was Barbara Blount from Ensley. Jones Valley was proud of its winner, Linda Parker. National Honor Society tapped eight new members: Bill Reid, Linda Davis, Kaye Ellis, Tommy Willing ham, Gary Altman, Bobbie Morris, Roger Hollis, and Tiajuana Lazenby. Joyce Seagraves found it hard to pin the flower on new member, Tommy Willingham. Most enjoyable event in February was the Senior Tea held on Sunday afternoon at the Y. W.C.A. Hostesses for the tea were Mrs. C. B. Causey, Mrs. Aubrey Tharp, Mrs. Gorden Kendrick, Mrs. Dulaney, Mrs. Paul Hampton, and Mrs. Seagraves. Senior tea social event of spring Jerome Gage and Don Hampton furnished entertainment by singing an original com- position which was enjoyed by faculty and students. Mr. and Mrs. Ferguson enjoyed both enter- tainment and refreshments. Page 2 What ' s Freda up to now? Jimmy Kendrick, Delilah Livingston, and Jimmy Rittman have decided that one never can tell. Ttie refreshments were enjoyed by all, includ- ing Bill Betts and Robert Gipson, who managed to get their share. Mary Clyde Marcum, Tommy Stafford, Mrs. Driggers, Sharon Tharp, Pat Williams, and Judy Colvart found Don ' s and Jerome ' s song amusing. Page 3 Paul Stokes, the band president, and his date, Cheryl Tressler, thoroughly enjoyed the program. Later on in the eve- ning, Paul gave the Last Will and Testa- ment of our band seniors. Band banquet held at Roma club Mr. Bob Moore, our special speaker for the evening, presented us with some inter- esting facts on mental illness musical therapy. He is shown here presenting a band letter to Linda Smith, a clarinet player and B-Team majorette. Pase 4 Diane Maulk, head B-Team majorette, Kay Brown, varsity majorette, and Carolyn Bragg, flag bearer, admire the lovely decorations planned by the members of the Band Boosters ' Club. Band members earn letters Mr. Davis presented a special award to Carl Lacey for being the most efficient band manager ever to have served The Golden 100. ■• Page 5 D Ro ' Cascade ' s lovely Cloud Room was the scene of this year ' s Junior-Senior Prom. The Prom Club decorating committee, with the help of Mrs. Joyce Chandler, spent many long hours developing the theme, Blue Hawaii. Freda Crosby ALWAYS enjoys her- self, and when she and her date arrived at Cascade, the party came to life. Page 7 By popular vote Myra Hughey was chosen Prom Queen. Solemn faces reflect mood of seniors On Friday, May 24, the senior class held Class Day exercises during assembly period their last assembly at Phillips High School. Paul Stokes, class prophet, caused a few red faces . Don Hampton, chosen by his classmates as the most outstanding graduate, was present- ed a trophy by a member of the Exchange Club. Each senior was presented with a copy of the May 24 absentee sheet on which a Brownie bade farewell to ' 63 graduates. TO LAUGH OR TO CRY - that ' s the question! Percy Owens provides a comforting shoulder for Ann Baggett, who was one of those who hated to leave Valley. Last Will and Testament provided amusement for Mrs Kathleen Waldrop, Louise Arthur, and Richard Baker. Page 12 i Joyce, Elaine, and Verna looked happy, at least in this picture.
