Friendship A ruddy drop of manly blood The surging sea out weighs; The world uncertain comes and goes, The lover rooted stays. I fancied he was fled, And, after many a year, Glowed unexhausted kindliness Like daily sunrise there. My careful heart was free again — O friend, my bosom said, Through thee alone the sky is arched, Through thee the rose is red, All things through thee take nobler form And look beyond the earth, The mill-round of our fate appears A sun-path in thy worth. Me too thy nobleness has taught To master my despair; The fountains of my hidden lite Are through thy friendship fair. We now happily approach your commencement or by dictionary definition beginning . As you depart Jonathan Dayton after commencement you will be beginning the quest for con- tinued physical, intellectual, social, emotional, and aesthetic growth. This quest must be a lifetime endeavor if you are to attain your goals and achieve the excellence of which you are capable. The challenge is great, but the rewards are even greater. May each of you meet the challenge successfully. My best wishes and my friendship go with you as you embark upon your beginning . Anthony J. Who could ever believe that this same man is capable of remembering any top ten hit for any week from 1956 to 1964? Well, it is true and he is our very own Wolf-Man Hostetter. Although well-known and admired throughout Dayton as an honorable and witty Cold War teacher, this man ' s fame is more wide-spread than any of us in this school might have suspect- ed. Surveys showed that every weekend on Friday and Saturday night from 6 to 12 o ' clock, thousands of people were tuning into WTAS to hear the voice of their favorite D.J., Wolf-Man Hostetter come piping through their radios. One might ask, How did he do it? Well, said Mr. Hostetter, occasionally I ' d make a strange noise, but other than that I found that just being myself was what did it! So, fellow Jonathan Dayton students, ask yourself this question. What group had the 1 hit for the first week in January of 1960? If you don ' t know, go ask Mr. Hostetter. He will. The swan-throated star sang everything from Johnny Mathis ' Chances Are to Chuck Berry ' s Johnny Be Good. The crooning carouser highlighted his show with a complete Elvis I ' m All Shook Up Pelvis medley. Dayton of course has no real Rollie Marionni Rock n ' Roll Revival, but we do have Mr. Roland Marionni, practicing scientific genius, and he happens to adore singing songs from the 50 ' s and ' 60 ' s. Each year, the day before Thanksgiving or Christmas, Mr. M. is transformed into Rollie Marionni, rock super-star. His act is impromptu and the props are all improvised. A bunsen burner plugged into a socket behind his desk serves as a microphone. A beaker of water substitutes for the usual alcoholic beverage used by performers for refreshment during the act. Rollie M. generally sings what he wants to sing. However, respon- sive audiences are bestowed the privilege of making requests. Show stoppers have included Charlie Brown , Great Balls of Fire , Love Potion 9 , Duke of Earl , Earth Angel , and Teenager in Love . Fortunately for all, Rollie M. happens to have a fine voice. Mr. Marionni spent the 50 ' s years as a teenager in industrial New Jersey. It was during this time that his love for the do-wop sound took root. On occasion, Mr. Marionni has been known to turn out tunes on the harmonica. When no real instruments are available, however, all is not lost. Mr. Marionni does excellent imitations of the horn, bass, and saxophone. His students enjoy his shows as much as he enjoys performing them. Coach Ed Jasinski did a fine job with his younger players. They started out well by winning their first game against West Orange. Later in the season, the team faced difficult competition; however, they handled it well. The bench was helpful to the starters. Overall, the girls did a good job and were happy with the outcome of the season. 147 Considering the Dayton Tennis Team played in one of the toughest conferences in the state, the team had a good season. Donna Liess, a nationally ranked junior girl, led the team by playing first singles. Dan Schlesinger played second singles and had the best record on the team. Neil Meisel played third singles, as did Pete Hess on occasion. The doubles teams were constantly being juggled. Players included Rich Simon, Mike Gottlieb, Artie Salmon, and Eric Strulo- witz. Coached by Rick Iacono, the team will have a chance to prove how good they are in post-season competition. i 148 The golf team had many new faces this season. Coached by Raymond Yanchus, the team played all of its home matches at the Baltusrol Golf Club. The team was led by two returning lettermen, Sr. Mike Rosenberg, and Jr. Skip Liguori. Dave Gechlik finished the season in strong fashion; Martin Swanson showed a fluid stroke. Phil Fantozzi, John Irwin, Neal Tepper and Toby Lesfoski rounded out the starting lineup.
