Robert Kirk. Commander, USN Robert Kirk was born in Gorman, Texas on 21 October 1922. He became a midshipman at the United States Naval Academy, class of 1945 in July 1941. On graduation in 1944, Ens. Kirk was assigned to the USS BOSTON which operated with the 3rd. and 5th. Fleets against Japan. After inactivation of Boston, Ltjg Kirk served on the USS TUCSON again in the Pacific Fleet. In 1949 Ltjg Kirk commenced a three year course of Naval Postgraduate Training, receiving a B.S. Degree in Engineering E lectronics from the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School and an M.S. Degree in Physics from the University of Calif, at Los Angeles. This course was followed in 1952 by almost four years in Key West, Florida where Lt. Kirk planned evaluations and evaluated new sonars and underwater sound systems. Joining the USS DEHAVEN in the Pacific Fleet as Executive Officer in 1956- Lcdr Kirk saw two deployments to the Western Pacific. From here he went to the Armed Forces Staff College in Norfolk, and thence for a tour of duty in the office of the Chief of Naval Operations. CDR Kirk took command of the USS JONAS IN- GRAM in July 1961. Mrs. Kirk and their two child- ren, Lee (7) and Elizabeth (3) reside in Mayport, F lorida. $MtmOMd£rtf O icen, To each man, I extend a hearty Well Done 1 Our cruise was long, and at times, difficult, but there was never a time when JONAS INGRAM was called upon that we did not respond immed- iately. Our People-to-People program depends on the individual Navyman ' s actions when ashore, and I am especially proud of the friends we made for the Navy and for our country. We had fun, and we learned a lot in each port we visited, and in each, we left a little bit of America. Professionally, too, we can look with pride at our record during the seven months we were in the Med. Called on for a great many and varied jobs, we came through with flying colors in the traditions of destroyers every time. As we return to our homeport, remember that the cooperation and teamwork you displayed made our successes possible, and continue them throughout your careers in the Navy. %A.
