Anglim, Jr-, GDR, USN Commanding Officer 28 March 1970 To the Men of JOHNSTON: 'Today we have completed a successful seven month deployment with the Sixth Fleet, in the Mediterranean. We have steamed over 40,000 miles, visited some twelve ports, and participated in National, NATO, and Bilateral ex- ercises. 1-ThZroughout our -deployment We were accorded the recognition that benefits af capable performer. Our readiness and willingness to perform any and all ,tasks assigned is indicative of the spirit and attitude with which each of you have approached your responsibilities. No problems--Just challenges has become a hallmark of your performance. For some of you this has been your first deployment. For others, it will be your last. In either event, may this cruise book in the months and years ahead serve to remind us all of the camaraderie of shipmatesg the enjoyable times and the comic situations that develop during such a long cruise, and finally the spirit of togetherness and cooperation that was required of all to enable us to perform as we did. Adgent, LGDR, USN Executive Officer e Short of .actual combat conditions, we have during the past seven months experienced one of the most rigorous and demanding existences required of a citizen of the United States: living and working aboard a steaming SIXTHFLT destroyer during the winter ' months. In aggrevation of this havebeen any number of daily occurances, many of them attributable to the age of our proud home. Thus, although our crew averaged only21 years in age, and we were born all over the United States and its territories, many of us did much of our growing up on JOHNSTON in the winter of 1969-70. And in the process we learned a lot. We learned about the inseparability of responsibility and authority, and the fact that they are both most effective when combined with large portions of mutual respect. We saw this respect and confidence as bestowed on individuals and their basic desire to do a good job produce a crew the likes of which, I feel, has never been seen. We not only learned to live with each other, we learned to live for each other, and in turn, for our families, our homes, our country, and our dreams of peace in the world. Yes, it was an unforgetable cruise for all of us. We'll remember the ports we visited, the friends we made, the exercises and operations in which we so successfully participated, and the meticulous way we maintained our ship. But I think most of all we'll remember with pride the fact that we learned to respect each other and the unique contributions we were all able to make in creating a SUPER CAN . Today: The Armed Forces-- The United States Navy--The USS JOHNSTON CDD-821D. Even during peacetime the venture is still there though it may be hidden, disguised, or thought to be latent. We of the JOHNSTON are ready to take our role in defending that heritage--under- taking the venture, regardless of the task. We stand ready to answer the call anywhere, be it in waters of friend or foe. Our call this cruise took us throughout the Mediterranean. Our venture: promote international relations and participate in allied naval operations--venture the unexpected, as well as the expected. During this venture, we maintained the highest level of readiness within our Task Group and rightfully earned the nicknames JOLLY 'J and SUPER CAN , names expres- sing our worth and proving we stand fast behind our motto. A motto not chosen casually or at random, but one we have proven through history at every opportunity. A motto stating that regardless of the task, the order, or the mission, we'll accept the challenge, we'll do the job, we'll prove our motto by putting our motto to work WE'LL PUT IT TO A VENTURE Q 8 SEP--16 SEP 17 SEP--23 SEP 24 SEP--28 SEP 28 SEP-- 29 SEP-- 1 OCT 3 OCT-- 4 OCT-- 5 OCT 5 OCT--14 OCT 15 OCT--16 OCT 17 OCT--25 OCT 26 OCT-- 2'7 OCT-- 9 NOV 10 NOV--14 NOV 14 NOV--21 NOV 21 NOV--24 NOV 25 NOV-- 4 DEC 4 DEC-- 7 DEC '7 DEC-- 8 DEC 8 DEC--10 DEC 10 DEC--18 DEC chedule of 1969 Enroute Exercise PEACEKEEPER Enroute Anchor Pollensa Bay, Menorca Moor Port Mahon, Menorca BFS Cagliari, Malta Enroute Moor Trieste, Italy EnroutefReplenish Exercise DEEP FURROW Anchor Navplion, France Anchor Athens, Greece Enroute Moor Brindisi, Italy Rep1enishfEnroute Moor Palma, Mallorca Ops West Mediterranean Moor D'hyres, France Exercise POOP DECK Exercise MEDITERRANEAN 'Uh-4 perations 18 DEC-- 19 DEC--20 DEC 21 DEC-- 4 JAN 5 JAN-- 9 JAN 9 JAN--10 JAN 10 JAN--23 JAN 24 JAN--27 JAN 28 JAN--29 JAN 29 JAN--31 JAN 1 FEB-- 6 FEB '7 FEB--15 FEB 16 FEB--20 FEB 21 FEB-- 22 FEB-- 2 MAR 3 MAR-- 8 MAR 9 MAR--16 MAR 17 MAR-- 17 MAR--27 MAR 28 MAR-- Anchor Gaeta, Italy Replenish 1970 Anchor Villefranche, France Ops TyrrhenianfIonian Seas Enroute TAV, Naples, Italy Enroute Moor Iskenderun, Turkey Enroute!Moor Mersin, Turke Ops Ionian!A egean Seas Anchor Athens, Greece Ops IonianfAdriatic Seas Replenish Moor Trieste, Italy Ops Ionian!Adriatic Seas Moor Palma, Mallorca TURNOVER Enroute Arrive Charleston J i 1, 1 1,5 2 .M 4 v if P' aw I 5. JOHNSTON Radiomen have not made a single mistake to -date, which is quite rare! for a Destroyer. THANKS AND KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK. NAVCOMMSTA GREECE Request you pass to the officers and men of the Destroyers outchopping with you my sincere appreciation. Your record of service with the SIXTH FLEET has been a credit to the image of Destroyermen. Whether performing routine duties with a carrier group or undertaking important, and short fused special assignments, all have responded with unvarying excellence. While ashore your officers and men have enhanced the image of SIXTH FLEET by your example of responsible behavior. It has been a pleasure to have had you as a part of the SIXTH FLEET. Best wishes for a safe, speedy crossing and a Happy Homecoming. Well done to all hands. VADM RICHARDSON COMMANDER, SIXTH FLEET As you outchop for SIXTH FLEET, I would like to express my appreciation for the superb manner in which you performed your duties. The outstanding cooperation and responsiveness of the destroyers under adverse conditions of weather and schedule changes have been most appreciated. Well done. I wish you fair winds and smooth sailing CONUS. RADM HOUSE COMMANDER, TASK FORCE SIXTY I congratulate every man in your crew for his contribution to the fine reputation earned by JOHNSTON during her deployment to the SIXTHFLEET, Despite the many problems en- countered and challenges presented, your performance of tasks assigned in the JOHNSTON manner has contributed significantly to meeting our worldwide commitments. You have had to make many sacrifices to meet the demands placed upon you: not only the numerous sleep- less ho rs of hard work but also the prolonged separation from your love-d ones. You have met th challenge in a manner befitting Destroyermen. Of this you can be justly proud. Best wishes for the best of homecomings. We're glad to have you back. RADM SHAFFER COMMANDER, CRUISER DESTROYER FORCE U. S. ATLANTIC FLEET When Event Detachment is executed, my one regret will be that my current association with JOHNSTON and my good fortune having had the opportunity of working with your outstanding ship ceases. Look forward to carrying JOHNSTON on the circuit at home sometime in the future, or better still to again be onboard to enjoy the refreshing atmosphere which exists throughout your superb crew, officers and men alike. Please convey my best wishes to my friends on board for a well earned and richly deserved homecoming. Until we meet again, warmest regards.
