SMITH UNIVERSITY CHARLOTTE, N.C. 57th Ed. COVER DESIGNED BY REGGIE L. BODRICK Theme: A New Beginning I thought this theme would be very appropriate for this year ' s yearbook. We, the students of Johnson C. Smith University are experiencing a year that we will long remember. Our president, Dr. Robert Albright, has initiated new changes and ideas that are needed. However, these changes should not be administered too drastically. There are students that will not return because of their inability to adapt to the drastic changes. Therefore, they will encounter A New Beginning . There are faculty members that will be repositioned because their methods of teaching no longer meet the necessary standards to help produce competent effective leaders. Therefore, they will encounter A New Beginning . There are staff members that will be replaced because they have grown a little old and frail and now they are no longer capable of producing a full day ' s work. Therefore, they will encounter A New Beginning . In addition to this, each of us read the English literature, multiplied the mathematical equations and experimented with the scientific chemicals. We all strived for the same goal, graduation. Nonetheless, we will all encounter A New Beginning . PHOTO BY JOHNELL KINSEV Look Out For The Bulls == = -« iaSBB8B g 5B K =s=5£ $Wl ,j S B ? The freshman class encountered many enjoyable activities upon their arrival at Johnson C. Smith University. One of the most outstanding activities was the fashion show La Papion . This theme was chosen by the participants because they felt La Papion (French for butterfly) expressed their charm and charis- ma. The models presented casual wear, swim wear, sports wear, after-five wear, and punk rock wear. Each category was one that left a very strong effect on the audience. However, the punk rock scene left the audience in a total uproar. The magnetism of this fashion show will long be remembered. The participants of this dynamic show were Melody, Kim- berly, Monica, Tracey, Pia, Karen, Tonya, Sabrina, Tonya, Donna, Lisa, Lori, Myrna, Dana, Octavia, Anita, Tanya, Angie, Herman, Rodney, and Terry. Holmes, was born June 20, 1943 in Pitt County, North Carolina. He attended the public schools in Pitt County and also North Carolina Central University in Durham, North Carolina. Mr. Holmes became employed in Washington, North Carolina working in recreational programs, joined the staff at Johnson C. Smith University as Dormitory Director and later joined the J. L. He leaves to mourn: wife, Evelyn Johnson Holmes; daughter, Kimberly; and mother, Mrs. Tessie L. Holmes as well as many relatives residing out of the city. In living there is death, In death there is living; How can death be proud? It has no power to conquer! We will someday be in what may be readily accepted as death; yet, there are times when the eve perceiveth incorrectly; for Jesus lives - BECAUSE HE LIVES we have inherited the right and privilege to life eternally with Him. In Memory of Cassandra Johnson God gathers his jewels out of the world and they are Souls. For this we know that life can never be destroyed that is built on the teaching of Jesus Christ. New lives will come in to refresh and to strengthen, but the new will not supplant the dear departed ones. All will become a part of a beloved mystical fellowship which is continuous. Miss Cassandra Lavette Johnson entered into eternal rest, Saturday, September 22, 1984, Simpsonville, South Carolina. Cassandra was born November 4, 1963 in Memphis, Tennessee. She was a member of the Tabernacle Baptist Church where she sang on the Youth Choir. She was a graduate of Hillcrest High School. She attended Johnson C. PHOTOS BY RECGIE McCONNELL Charles F. Minnis, Senior Class President We the Senior Class of 1985, are eager to meet the great challenges which we shall encounter upon graduation. The past four years at JCSU have been for each if us stepping stones filled with long hours of study and precious moments of enjoyment and personal growth. Likewise, graduation presents its pleasant ambiguities: it represents both endings and new beginnings. Graduation is a time for laughter and a time for tears; a time for lightheartedness, a time for seriousness; a time for apprehension, a time for confidence; a time for farewell, a time for salutation. And we, the fortunate, should be eternally grateful that, by the Grace of Almighty God and through the ardent support of parents, family, teachers, and friends, we have arrived . We have arrived at that juncture in our lives which marks the close of our formative years as undergraduates in favor of our initiation into the realities of this transitory life. Seniors, hold fast to your special plans and dreams with faith and face the future head-on with high aspirations. Realize within your mind and soul that the best is yet to come! In the words of Helen Steiner Rice: As you climb life ' s ladder, Take faith along with you And great will be your happiness As your dearest dreams come true. Gold has no value unless it is reminted into goodness. Let me be great in the eyes of the Lord, For that is the richest, most priceless reward. CONGRATULATIONS and best wishes in all future endeavors. 18 Charles F. Minnis Senior Class President PHOTOGRAPHY BY JOHNELL KINSEY Senior Class Executive Board L. to R. This year has been interesting in that student awareness of critical issues has increased. It is my hope and prayer for students to continue to become involved and speak and act on their concerns. Change and progress come only when we work together. I would like to thank my board and advisors. Rev. Hood and Mr. Dowdy for their support throughout the year. I would also like to thank Dr. Albright, other administrators, faculty and staff who worked with us during the school year. Although we had our differences, the lines of communication remained open and professional. I would like to give a special thanks to the student body for giving me the opportunity to serve them. The year was filled with ups and downs, but trials come to make us stronger and help us grow. Therefore, I would like to leave a thought with everyone. Your college experience will only be as good as you make it. If you put something in, you will get something out. My prayers are with you as you continue your education. May God richly bless you. The stated purpose of the 22 founders was to establish a society to promote high cultural, intellectual, and moral standards among its members. Like Violets, Deltas must be individually selected. You can ' t grab a handful without damaging some of them. They can not be roughly picked or picked in a hurry. The $1,573,570 pledged so far represents 54 r v of the minimum goal of $2.8-million sought. The Johnson C. Smith University family is most grateful to the corporate and civic leaders who ' ve worked so hard and diligently in this campaign, commented JCSU President Dr. Robert L. Albright. With $1.5-million in hand at this point in our schedule, we are confident of achieving a successful conclusion, he continued. With a little more luck and hard work, we hope to exceed our goal and generate enough support to meet the genuine needs of the University which far transcends the $2.8-million goal. The $1.5-million raised thus far has come from 55 ' of completed prospect visits. With a February 1 campaign ending date, an accelerated return of pledges is expected in the coming weeks. Campaign workers continue to receive a very favorable and enthusiastic reception in their prospect visits, remarked Campaign General Chairman John B. Stedman. Handy AN ODE TO OUR MOTHER Tho ' it ' s not that widely celebrated day Yet, there ' s something which I long to say. I never knew when I was a ' tad That you were doing such great things - with what little bit you had. I was so naive then and, only a teeny snot I had no idea you had to use whatever you got! I would be so envious of what the other kids had, I didn ' t know you were trying to make it - even without our dad. I used to hear you pray to God, so often and late at night; And somehow he and you together, made everything turn out alright. It ' s true that many kids had more material things than we; I had no idea how you had sacrificed I thought everything was free! You ' d ask the lord to find a way to make it through the day. I thought it was a fruitless prayer, But now here ' s what I ' d like to say. Your prayers and decisions were for the best, for when I became a man, Tho ' it was earlier than most kids, but today I understand. I see the great things you did for us: yet, in a way I ' m very sad. I now know how you made many miracles, with what little bit you had. I remember how you ' d chastise us, whenever you thought we were wrong. Oftimes you ' d never explain, but only said live on! There were many things you warned us about, And I ' ve lived to see most of them come out. Maybe not the way you said it but, rather what you meant. Today I don ' t regret a hungry night I have ever spent. From you I ' ve learned to discipline myself and set sky-high my goal. I ' ve reaped a lot of harvests, and been blessed many-fold! I ' ve learned to ask The Master to take my hand and hold. I ' ve learned to take time out and thoroughly search my soul. What I ' ve learned and accomplished came from God and you. I feel that there is nothing now that I cannot do! I see you now advanced in age, still striving to make things be. I still see you starting with nothing and making reality. Sometimes I wonder if children of today who seem so distant and far, would hear and listen to you - maybe, yes maybe, wouldn ' t be so much as they are. I know that you cared and loved us, one and all, You gave me strength to get back up whenever I slip and fall I love you my dear Mother an so, I ' m no longer mad. For now I know the wonders you accomplished, with the little bit you had! Ruben Lemuel Hines Poetry Identity Is it strange? Is it frightening to see? Does it derange, or bring change? To your rules of conformity? Do you frown at my face? An item so dear to me. Does it bring to mind, that I ' m trying to find? A thing you may never see, A thing from the past, to which I hold fast. Known as Identity Trying What ' s with you? I try so hard, Is it me - or you You ' re so complex so very hrad to understand But I ' ll try There ' s just something about you that keeps me trying. Believe Me It ' s hard to say I love you To express my deepest feelings on a piece of lifeless paper with a hard, cold piece of lead. How can you possibly know how I feel from words thrown on a page? It ' s hard to say I love you . I ' m writing on a lifeless piece of paper. Won ' t you take my word for it? Will I Ever Will I ever? I don ' t know! Will I ever? I don ' t think so! It ' s in me - I know But will I ever? I don ' t think so! I have so much to give! So much stayed inside me! But will I ever? I don ' t know! Will I ever? I don ' t think so! Why? I don ' t Know! Just Me I don ' t get lonely everytime I ' m alone I find that I ' m company for myself. I have so much to talk to me about. So much I want me to learn. So much for me to see. When my eyes are tired, I put on my Ray Band ' s and everything is soft and quiet. Then there ' s music to be heard writing to be done, exercises, pampering my body, no time to be lonesome. If you were here you ' d enjoy me, too. You and I I ' m here, You ' re there. I feel so alone in the world by myself - No one to love me No one to care I know if I would lose you I myself would be lost . . . Where Are You? Are you there? Show me a sign. I know you ' re here, Show me a sign, I wonder why? About so many things. I doubt your existence. But I know you ' re there, See me through this. It ' ll take time, Show me you ' re here. I ' ll try to keep my faith. I have to - you know me, I know vou ' re there. FOR NO CAUSE Why do you seem to hate me? If it ' s because I ' m dirty, I can bathe myself. If it ' s because my hair is unkempt, I can straighten it. If it ' s because my clothes are ragged, I can mend them It it ' s because my shoes are worn, I can repair them. If it ' s because my clothes doesn ' t fit, I can have them tailored. If its because I do not smile, I can change it. If it ' s because I have no hair, I can purchase a wig. If it ' s because I ' m loud, I can become silent. If it ' s because I ' m crude, I can become refined If it ' s because of how I feel, I can change my attitude. But if it ' s because I ' m Black, I can only refer you to, The God who made me! Ruben L. Hines Homecoming Content o tit e 4 OCT. 20- CORONATION 1 8 :00 P . m . Smith women ' s team appears brighter than in recent years. Three starters and eight returning players reported for the initial 1984 practice along with a promising group of first year players. Last season ' s top three scorers are back in senior guard Odelia Johns (15.7 ppg), junior forward Cassandra Howell (14.8 ppg) and senior center forward Caryl Hardin (12.4 ppg). Johns became the second woman to join the JCSU 1,000 point club in the last game of the ' 83- ' 84 season. Gone are guard Sonya Dalton, whose 7 assists and 3.5 steals per game will be m issed, and forward Latonya Roane (8.3 ppg). Sophomore Saundra McCracken picked up valuable experience in operating the point and should be ready to fill in for the departed Dalton. Immediate help will come from freshman Sharrion Beard who averaged 24 points per game for Anderson (Indiana) High. Despite Cassandra Howell ' s 10.3 rebounds per game and Caryl Hardin ' s 8.3 caroom average, J. C. Smith was edged by 3 rebounds a game last year. Head coach Steve Joyner brought in a Shelby, North Carolina standout that will provide immediate help on the boards. Forward Janice Young (6 ' ) of Crest High comes from an excellent prep program. Joyner should enjoy a wellspring of leadership from Hardin; Howell and Johns. Smokey Johns earned All-CIAA honors in 1983 while Howell garnered all conference and honorable-mention All-American honors in 1984. Their court relationship should be a plus in developing the freshmen potential. We have a nucleus of proven talent and the potential to enjoy a good year, reflected Joyner. It all comes down to how hungry our upperclass players are and how willing everyone on the team is to dedicating themselves to fulfilling that potential. The women ' s program has been on the verge of taking the final step into becoming a league power the past three years with marks of 13-12, 14-10 and 13-12. The CIAA women ' s conference produced the NCAA II national championship and the national runner-up in the past two years. It ' s a difficult league to dominate and even more difficult to remain a consistent winner over a long-term stretch. Joyner and his team are hoping the 1984- ' 85 season proved the transition year on the way to a CIAA southern division title. Women ' s Basketball Coach and Assistant Head Coach Steve Joyner Steve is in his seventh year at Johnson C. Smith, his fifth as head women ' s coach. During that time he has produced a 50-46 mark and three All-CIAA performers. Joyner is a former captain and point guard for Joe Alston ' s Golden Bull teams of 1969-73. He earned a master ' s degree in guidance and counselling from Virginia State Univer- sity. At JCSU, Steve teaches Health and Physical Education, serves as an assistant football coach and directs the intramural program. Steve and his wife Nerell have two sons, Steve, Jr. and Brian. Assistant Coach Marsha Alexander Marsha returns for a second year. A 1983 graduate of JCSU, Alexander currently holds school records in career points (1,188) and career rebounds (884) as a former Smith player. She successfully guided the first-ever JCSU women ' s volleyball team to the finals of the CIAA tournament and a winning record in the Fall of 1984. JCSU Basketball Coaches Head Basketball Coach Robert Moore (Right Page) Robert Douglas Moore enters his seventh year at the helm of the Johnson C. Smith University basketball program following a 12-15 rebuilding year. Looking over the history of his collegiate coaching record, don ' t expect Bob Moore to be down long. The Asheville, NC native is just eight games away from becoming only the second JCSU coach to win 100 basketball games. Edward Jackson compiled 148 wins and 57 losses between 1936 and 1945 before moving on to Howard. Moore has a 92-69 record at Smith and a 93-41 mark at Virginia Union for a combined 185-110 collegiate record. Just 15 wins in 1984-85 and Moore will reach 200 wins in 12 collegiate seasons. During that 11 year span the Golden Bull mentor has one other set of statistics that few coaches can match. Only one player who played out his eligibility failed to graduate with a college degree. Moore earned a Masters degree in mathematics from Temple University and is a full-time faculty member in the math department as well as head basketball coach. My father (Clarence L. Moore, an inductee of the Western North Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame) taught me to win on the courts and in the class, remarked Moore. One is not exclusive of the other. His academic record makes Robert Moore a winner no matter what the win column mark proclaims. When we won the CIAA southern division back to back in 1981 and 1982, my greatest satisfaction came in May when our seven seniors that won those titles received their degrees together. Moore and his wife Mary live near Davidson with sons, Bobby, Jr., Bernie and Rayner. Assistants Ike Fullard returns for a third year as assistant coach and recruiter. Ike has added on responsibilities as an assistant- football coach as well as his work in the Guidance Department. A graduate of Norfolk State, Fullard earned a Masters degree in guidance and counselling from Nova University. Ike ' s wife Olivia also works for Smith as the director of the Mary Irwin Belk Day Care Center. They have one son, Issac Fullard III. Tracey Bookman is serving as a student assistant after finishing his basketball playing career last year at Smith. The Houston, Texas native previously coached junior high basketball at Northwestern. Robert Moore - Men ' s Basketball Horace At The Helm Horace Small was selected as the 16th football coach in Johnson C. Smith University history. The 46 year-old native of Jacksonville, Florida, will also serve as athletic director for the NCAA II school. Small has served as line coach and administrative assistant at Smith the past five years. He is a graduate of Shaw and holds a Master ' s Degree in Physical Education from Florida A M University. He and his wife, the former Laverne Hicks, have one son, Horace Small II. Coach Small is no stranger to the 14 member Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA). He served as an assistant and head coach at Shaw University in Raleigh, N.C., as well as assistant at Florida A M and Delaware State of the Mid Eastern (MEAC) Conference. Discipline, organization and hard work are three qualities most often cited of Small as a coach. J. C. Smith has earned a reputation as an institution that takes its educational mission seriously, noted Small. We feel we can build a winning program with that philosophy. Parents want their sons to graduate, he continued. We sell our school first in recruiting. An athlete with the discipline to do well academically has the discipline needed to succeed out on the field. As athletic director, Small doesn ' t plan to shy away from the challenges of scheduling outside powers such as a South Carolina State. A patsy schedule won ' t attract the interest of good athletes or the fans, acknowledged Small. Developing a winning program takes time, a team effort between staff and supporters and, of course, money. Developing a carefully monitored and aggressive business approach to the athletic program is a necessity for most division II programs to survive, noted Small. Starting this year we will be implementing several new approaches to strengthen our program in fund raising and the business community support. Small is also visiting JCSU alumni associa- tions to solicit their support in selling the school to potential prospects. A more extensive scouting and recruiting network has already been fashioned over the summer. Selling JCSU and Charlotte is no problem as both have a lot to offer, assessed Small. In time, we hope to develop a well-worn path to our doorstep from the winning high school programs. We will lose some recruiting battles, but it won ' t be from lack of effort. In time, we hope to develop a well-worn path to our door step from the winning high school programs. — Horace Small Sharpe Crosby Assistant Coaches MOSES SHARP Moses is a former tight end and graduate of Johnson C. Smith University. He is the elder statesman on the Golden Bull staff, entering his 19th year with the program. Sharpe will work with the runningbacks during the 1984 season, he also serves as a physical education and swimming instructor. IKE FULLRD Fullard will use his former quarterback skills at Norfolk State to direct the offense in 1984. Ike still owns a Spartan school record or two. He has also served as the men ' s assistant basketball coach the past three years and has worked in the counselling department on campus. Ike and his wife, Olivia, have one son. JOE CROSBY Joe enters his third year as a linebacker coach. He is a graduate of North Carolina A T State where he earned All-MEAC honors as a linebacker. The Charlotte native continued professionally in football with the AFA champion Charlotte Storm. Joe is employed in the Office of Financial Affairs at JCSU. KEN TILLMAN Kenneth is a former All-CIAA defensive tackle from Fayetteville State University. Tillman is employed by Piedmont Airline and is a part-time assistant working with the defensive line. JOHN HARRISTON John joins the Golden Bull family for the first time. He is a former standout offensive guard at N.C. A T State. For the past eight years he has served as line coach at independence High School, helping build one of Charlotte ' s better high school programs. He is married with two children. Harriston will work with the offensive linemen. Wesley Leads an Offense Back on its Feet Johnson C. Smith ' s pass-oriented attack has kept one of the CIAA ' s top running talents out of the limelight the past few years. The spotlight in 1984 may dramatically showcase the running abil- ity of senior Darrel Wesley as the Golden Bulls switch to the wishbone and a greater emphasis on the ground game Wesley staked his credentials early as a fresh- man in 1981. Darrel carried the ball 175 times for 829 yards (4.7 yards per carry) and four TDs. A series of injuries kept the Washington, D.C. native out of the line-up for half of his sophomore year when he carried the ball only 78 times for 269 yards (3.4 ypc). Healthy again as a junior, Darrel carried the ball 120 times for 563 yards (4.6 ypc). During a good portion of his career, the Golden Bulls were filling the air with passes. Wesley led all receivers in 1983 with 28 receptions for 333 yards. He has 51 career catches for 555 yards. In total. Wesley has accounted for 2,216 career offensive yards (88.6 yards per game) in his first three years. It ' s obvious Darrel hasn ' t been getting the call enough, cited Horace Small. Darrel is in excel- lent shape and can take a lot of punishment for a player his size. The 5 ' 8 speedster, who runs the 40 yard dash in 4.4 seconds, has increased his weight to 180 pounds. I ' ve been able to build up my weight without sacrificing speed, remarked Wesley. I ' m hoping the weight room will add durability since it appears I ' ll be carrying the ball more. As a freshman, Wesley finished 6 yards behind CIAA rushing leader Dennis Mahon of Hampton Institute. Darrel has been operating in the shadow of Livingstone ' s prolific JoJo White the past two seasons. The change in offense should open up more opportunities for me, reflected Wesley. The guys up front have been working hard 1 think the entire offensive unit is excited about the change. Logan Wrestles with Ambition There is little limit to the physical strength and talent of nose guard John Logan. In high school he was an outstanding heavyweight wrestler as well as an all-conference tackle and shotputter. Logan has not let up as a collegian. Filling in for an injured starter in the first game of his freshman year, John impressed coaches immediately. His tenacious play and deceptive quickness earned him the spot for good. John pushes himself real hard, noted defen- sive coach Joe Crosby. He ' s not happy making 83 tackles in 10 games despite being double teamed. Logan patrols the tackle to tackle area with alarming quickness. I guess my wrestling experience helps me shed blockers, stated the Stanley, N.C. native. And a great deal of strength, too. John bench presses 475 pounds and does squats with 800 pounds. He has pared down his weight from 310 pounds to 280 on a 6 foot frame. Logan will get up at 5:30am and work out on his own, mentioned Small. He ' s exceptionally motivated. John continues to excel in other areas as well. He is the 1983 84 CIAA shot-put champion. One of the oldest JCSU track records is Billy Corbett ' s heave of 52 ' 11 in the shot-put set in 1972. Cor- bett, at 6 ' 6 , went on to be a first round draft choice of the Cleveland Browns. Logan twice reached over 50 feet early in 1983. At the JCSU Relays, John tossed the weight 52 ' 2 . I noticed that his girlfriend and mother were at that meet, quipped Horace Small. You can be sure that each will have a season pass for the 1984 football season. Logan was selected by league coaches on the second team All-CIAA team in 1983. Entering his junior year, the coaches voted him to the 1984 pre season All CIAA team. It ' s an honor that the East Gaston High graduate has worked extremely hard for. One thing is for sure, he ' ll never be satisfied if there is any room for improvement left. 1984 JCSU Golden Bull Football Team 52 Billy Banks Junior LB Charlotte, NC Broke into the starting line-up as an inside linebacker in 1983. After a layoff, Anthony found he missed the game. Smith coaches are glad he did. Good pass coverage ability, speed and open field tackling. Byers is a strong candidate to start as a CB. 72 Kelvin Davis Junior OG East Orange, NJ Two year starter at right guard. Should be considered for post season honors. 2 Wendell Dixon Sophomore QBWR Madison, FL Versatile athlete who has played defensive back, quarterback and wide receiver. Strong points are intelligence and discipline. Ideal lineman for the wishbone attack. Well developed from weight training. Coaches are excited about his future. Will start at left guard after a fine Spring showing. 77 Ernie Harris Junior DE South Boston, VA An athlete of good potential who has been sidelined by knee injuries the last two years. Ernie was slated as a starter. The last operation involved major work making it uncertain whether Harris will be able to come back as a player. 18 Keith Harris Junior QB Decatur, GA Starting quarterback in the newly-installed wishbone offense. Pitches out well, has the needed strength to be a wishbone QB. Passing ability is solid. 1983 Stats: 2-9-2 43 yards 4 rushes (-9 yards) 56 Walter Harris Junior LB DE Garner, NC Intent player who accounted for 58 tackles (19 solo) as an inside linebacker in 1983. Hard hitter with good instincts. Walter may be called upon to help as a defensive end if he is not starting as a linebacker. 1983 Stats: 58 tackles (19 solo) 1 intercept 1 fumble recovery 30 Michael Hoyles Junior RB Rock Hill, SC Versatile RB who has been used as both a tailback and fullback. Michael runs stronger as the game progresses. Stepfan has worked hard in the weight room and shows super determination. Jones is trying to come back after a tumor operation on his leg. 27 Ed Lilly Junior SS Albemarle, NC Strong candidate for a starting spot in the secondary. Started four games last year. Ed has improved his physical strength with the weights. Led the defense in pass break-ups in 1983. 1983 Stats: 32 tackles (15 solo) 1 intercept 9 pass break-ups 99 John Logan Junior NG East Gaston, NC A coach ' s dream player. Hard working, dedicated and effective lineman. Benches 475 pounds, does squats with 800 pounds. Quiet leader who constantly strives to improve. Second team All CIAA as a sophomore. Selected by the coaches as a preseason All-CIAA pick. 1983 Stats: 83 tackles (26 solo) 6 QB sacks 33 Wilbur Mapp Junior FB Asheville, NC Mapp missed Spring practice while recovering from surgery. Starting fullback last year. Developing good power. Will battle Mark Saunders for the starting spot. 1983 Stats: 86 rushes 341 yards (3.9 ypc) 4 TDs 9 receptions 51 yds. 51 Jerome McCoy Freshman LB McCoy arrived at Smith as a fullback. He was red-shirted last year and looked at in several positions. Finally settling at linebacker, he had an impressive Spring practice. McCoy has height (6 ' 3 ), range and speed for the outside LB position. Jerome is scheduled as a starter for 1984. 42 Jarius Moore Sophomore CB Decatur, GA Good pass defender. Jarius saw a lot of action in the second half of the 1983 season. Moore combines 4.5 speed with the ability to hit hard. Saunders compiled 596 yards on 136 carries and scored 6 TDs in his initial year. He dropped out of school for personal reasons afterward. Now 20 pounds heavier, Mark returned to form quickly in Spring practice as he attempts his comeback. 1 Leon Scott Senior DB Sumter, SC Reserve defensive back with experience and desire. Forte has been his specialty team play where he led that unit with 15 tackles. The primary goal of the program is to generate the academic skills and motivation necessary for success in education beyond high school. The target group to be served is those low-income or potential first generation college students who have potential for success in a 2 or 4 year college but who, without the program, would not be likely to gain admission to or successfully complete college due to inadequate preparation, and or underachievement. The program consists of three basic components: reading skills and language laboratory use, tutorial assistance, and counseling and contact services. A ST Ms. Rita Rorie Photoa By Reginald McConnell Financial Aid Mr. Isaac Coley, Mrs. Carolyn Smith, Mrs. Shirley Whitley, Mr. Ranee Jackson. FINANCIAL AID Application Procedure A student must file an application for student financial aid each academic year. One annual application, when properly completed, will place the applicant in consideration for any aid funds administered by the Student Financial Aid Office. Applications should be filed with the Director, Office of Student Financial Aid, Johnson C. Smith University, Charlotte, North Carolina 28216. All applicants for financial assistance must submit a statement of financial resources. All students and parents are requested to complete the Family Financial Statement (FFS) which is processed by the American College Testing Service (ACT) in Iowa City, Iowa. This application can be used for the Pell Grant Program also. Please be sure to read all the information and instructions to ensure that the application has been completed correctly. These forms are available at high school guidance offices and at the Student Financial Aid Office at the University. Students who expect to receive academic scholarships, athletic grants, or music grants must submit their applications in the same manner as those who apply for federal assistance. The institution ' s financial aid office will accept the Financial Aid form processed by College Scholarship Service (CSS) if the ACT application is not available. As a general rule, the deadline for all applications is April 15 of each year; however, applications are accepted after this date for students who are admitted after April 15. A student ' s eligibility for the Pell Grant award is taken into account in the amount of aid awarded from funds administered by the institution. The Pell Grant will likely constitute a considerable portion of the total amount of aid awarded; however, it is imperative that applicants file Pell Grant applications as soon as the forms are available. Satisfactory Academic Progress To be eligible to receive financial aid students must maintain satisfactory academic progress as determined by the institution. Students not meeting such academic requirements may not receive financial assistance for the semester if they fail to meet requirements. The Library The James B. Duke Memorial Library, a modern structure near the center of the campus, was completed in the summer of 1967. It has an open-shelf arrangement, designed to create interest and to provide easy access to the collection. Total resources of the library include materials directly related to classroom work, as well as general and recreational reading materials. It houses valuable reference books, bound and unbound periodicals, pamphlets, and audio-visual materials, in addition to the general book collection — all of which promote the objectives of the University. These are frequent displays on subjects of general and special interest. Books and periodicals that are not available in the James B. Duke Memorial Library may be obtained from other libraries through inter-library loans and copying facilities. Comfortable reading areas are provided on both floors of the library. On the second floor are located study carrels for instructors and students. The west wing of the building houses the Audiovisual Center and two classrooms for lectures and viewing. Policies, designed for the interest of all users of the library, appear in the Library Guide, which is distributed at the circulation desk. Mrs. Mildred Sanders Mrs. Linda P. When I was editor of the yearbook in 1982, I discovered so many hidden strengths that I never thought existed within me. Now that I am editor once again I ' ve found those strengths to be a big asset. This years book is composed of some of the most exciting events in the history of Johnson C. Smith University. However, I regret not being able to provide a representation of every event that occurred this school year. In the near future I hope the administration will find it within themselves to increase the yearbook budget. It was not easy to produce a yearbook with a budget that has been the same since 1981 when the publishing company ' s prices increased at the same time. Nonetheless, I made it with the help of God. To whom ever the 1986 editor might be I leave you with these words of wisdom. Plan your ladder diag ram carefully because it will help you to meet each deadline on time. Organize your time wisely because time is of the essence when you are working on deadlines. Monitor your budget carefully because it is not hard to overspend such a minute budget. Pray constantly because prayer will be your only source of dependable help. In addition to this, I thank my advisor Rev. Calvin Hood who was always understanding and very supportive; Francis Harris, Phil Busher and Carl Bergman who provided me with photographs; Wayne Wolfe my publisher from Walsworth Publishing Company; Maxine Mackins who provided me with professional advice; President and Mrs. Albright who provided their home and hospitality; Johnell Kinsey owner and operator of Kinsey Photography and my staff Sylvester, Deedra, Reggie, Mr. Gidney, Darryl, Katherine, Ella, LaShun, Hope, Vickie, Deron, Terrence, Alfonso, Stefan, Angela, Lana, Larry, Greg, and Stephanie.
