S T R A T I O N yv meSSaae troni our f- reiiaent — Grcetinos tu tlir ' .tudcnts and all vvhn read this bodk. Congratulations to the members ol the staff that produced it. Special congratulations and good wishes to the voung men and young women of the Class of 1952. The title of a popular current motion picture, Quo Vadis, the literal translation of which is Whither Goest Thou? , poses a question which I would like to point up for all who read this book and especially for the Class of 1952. In 1895 Henryk Sienkiewicz wrote the historical novel Quo Vadis depicting the time of the reign of Nero. In the book the Apostle Peter is pictured leaving the City of Rome where many Christians had suffered martyrdom. As he went down the Appian Way, Peter met Christ and falling down before him sobbingly asked of Christ, Quo Vadis, Dcjminer , to which the Christ answered. If thou desert mv people, I am going to Rome to be crucihed a second time. This incident turned Peter around and he went back to Rome and continued his labors in that wicked citv for the Christ Irom whom he had receixed so much. The destructi ' e forces in the world today arc frightening. The minds of manv men are as deluded and the hearts of manv are as insensible to human dignity as were the mind and heart of Nero. Your education has been aimed at helping you become sensitive to the needs of vour dav. The acid test of the soundness of your educaticjn will be your attitude toward the problems and conditions you find about you. Therefore, the question Quo Vadis? ' . Do vou turn your back on vour family, vour com- munitv and the needs of v iur fellowman and seek case and comfort or do you go forward to do some- thing about the problems of your societv and labor for the realization for all men something of the advantages which vou haxe experienced?
