AM05 Mao OF JOHNSON C SMITH UNIVERSITY Paae Two PRESENTS A YEAR OF MEMORIES . Piige Three DEDICATION In chested admiration for the hest cage season in the annals ot Smith, in trihute to superior coacliing, and in recognition of the excellent teamwork exemplified in their historv-making achievement, we proudly dedicate this issue of the Bull to Coach Calvin Irvin and the 1952 Golden Bull Basketball Team. Congratulations to the members ol the staff that produced it. Special congratulations and good wishes to the voung men and young women of the Class of 1952. The title of a popular current motion picture, Quo Vadis, the literal translation of which is Whither Goest Thou? , poses a question which I would like to point up for all who read this book and especially for the Class of 1952. In 1895 Henryk Sienkiewicz wrote the historical novel Quo Vadis depicting the time of the reign of Nero. In the book the Apostle Peter is pictured leaving the City of Rome where many Christians had suffered martyrdom. As he went down the Appian Way, Peter met Christ and falling down before him sobbingly asked of Christ, Quo Vadis, Dcjminer , to which the Christ answered. If thou desert mv people, I am going to Rome to be crucihed a second time. This incident turned Peter around and he went back to Rome and continued his labors in that wicked citv for the Christ Irom whom he had receixed so much. The destructi ' e forces in the world today arc frightening. The minds of manv men are as deluded and the hearts of manv are as insensible to human dignity as were the mind and heart of Nero. Your education has been aimed at helping you become sensitive to the needs of vour dav. The acid test of the soundness of your educaticjn will be your attitude toward the problems and conditions you find about you. Therefore, the question Quo Vadis? ' . Do vou turn your back on vour family, vour com- munitv and the needs of v iur fellowman and seek case and comfort or do you go forward to do some- thing about the problems of your societv and labor for the realization for all men something of the advantages which vou haxe experienced? Smith University returned to camp. The scene here at Smith was the same as those colleges across the country exhibited. The loud screechinw of whistles. rough voices of coaches. and the hioh spirit of players filled the air, for this was the beginning of football season. This being the case, let us return to the golden days of September, October, and November, and look in on three wins and five losses. With four hard weeks of training under their belt . all too soon did the date come when the Bulls trotted on the field to tangle with the Tigers of St. Paul. We who had been closely following our team through its daily drills were confident of victory. Led by the swivel-hipped Howard Petty, the sure-fingered William Perry and the hard-plunging Henry Ely, the Bulls emerged with a 19-0 victory. Everyone on the Hill came home happy that bright day be cause this was the beginning of a new day for Smith. The following Saturday, Coach Brayboy took his boys to the state capital where the Saint Augustine Horses ' otTered the competition. Playing in a terrific heat wave (90 degrees above— whew!), our Bulls fell by the wayside 6-0. The Saints, lacking the offen- sive punch and all-around finesse of last year ' s squad, still possessed enough Bobby Clark to defeat Smith. 1 m % h sjh y ' : J j A- 1 ' ' - i « 4- J - ? tl . Returning home with a land record, the Bulls plaved host to Delaware State. Under the arc-lights of Memorial Stadium, a rough and ready crew of Smithmen sent the State College men home with an impressive 24-7 licking. Washington, D. C was the scene of the next tilt where the Bisons of Howard University outclassed our Bulls 20-0. Smith possessed a weak pass defense, therefore the Bisons took advantage. Coronation, parade, dances? Yes! This was Home- coming! How well do we remember how the luckless Bulls fell to a 26-13 licking at the hands of the Rams of Winston-Salem Teacher ' s College. Present and former Smith students cheered for the Golden Bulls wildlv, only to be heartbroken with the bitter defeat. With a 2-3 won-lost record. Smith journeyed to Durham with the intent of clipping the wings of the high-flying North Carolina State Eagles. Ernest War- lick and Company handed the Bulls their worst defeat of the season, 33-0. The Eagles, no doubt remembering last vear ' s rough scrap, commenced the rout early in the game which eventually made our season record 2 wins and 4 losses. Then the Bulls saw red and went on a rampage. The victims? Shaw University Bears. It was on this chilly afternoon that William McCullough intercepted a Shaw pass and danced 78 yards down the sidelines to pay dirt. This margin was all the Bulls needed to conquer the Bears. In the season ' s finale, they journeyed to the sun- shine state of Florida to meet Bethune-Cookman. Whoopee! Looka there! The Bulls made a T.D. (P.S.. e.xtra point, too!) But the game was only a few minutes old, and the worst was yet to come. Bethune- Cookman came back with a powerful offense and smothered the Bulls 45-7. This was the final fray for the 1951 Smith season as well as the end of football careers for William McCullough. William Perry, Eugene Poole, Arthur Redding, Augustus Woods and Napoleon Nelson. For four endless years these men have won the hearts of all the fans. It will long be remembered how they fought for the gold and blue week after week. Jerseys, pads, shoes, headgear and pants were tucked neatly in the ole storage room; thus the curtain closed ending another gridiron season. With such stalwarts a; William Jones, James Hargett, William Perry, and Claude Saunders Coach Calvin Irvin molded a mighty crew. In early December the Bulls tangled with Saint Paul. Fayettevillc State, and North Carolina A. T. Out of the three teams only A. T. was able to conquer the Smith Hardwood crew before retiring for the Christmas holidays. Returning on January 3. 1952, the Golden Bulls really went to work on C.I.A.A. competition. Those who fell at the hands of Smith were Virginia, Lincoln Uniyersitv, Howard University, North Carolina A. T., Saint Paul Polytechnic Institute, Winston-Salem Teach- ers College, and Saint Augustine College. Out of the eight teams only three along with Morgan Stale College handed the Irvin squad defeat. They were A. T., Virginia State, and Shaw. Playing brilliant ball and possessing that determining spirit, the Bulls found themselves perched on top of the C.I.A.A. League sporting an impressive 10-3 record. Early season predictions rated Smith among the top ten teams in double A play, but these golden lads fought their way to the first live. The Bulls left town enroute to Fayetteville to participate in the annual North Carolina College Bas- ketball Tourney. Yes, the Bulls met Saint Augustine in the first round of the game to the semi-finals. The Smithmen seemed to like the boys from the state capital, for Shaw was the ne. t ' ictim to fall at the hands of Smith. Advancing to the finals. Smith played North Carolina College and wound up in second place. (P.S.— too much George McQueen.) With the season nearing its climax, the C.I.A.A. Tournament was the only really competitive event remaining. Receiving the pairings in advance, the Smith Bulls were matched with the Bears of Morgan State. In the opening game of the first round the Bulls defeated the host team, Morgan, by the narrow margin of 70-68. This was an exciting game, for seeing an early lead melt away, the Bulls found themselves on the short end of a 68-66 score. With only twenty seconds left in the game the Bulls salvaged the game with two quick lay-up shots to ease through to victory. We drew the high-scoring, potent West Virginia State Yellow Jackets, who were seated in the top position. The spirited Bulls ran roughshod over the high-flying Yellow Jackets 101-83. The enraged Bulls performing like madmen set a tournament record with this score. This victory with the entire squad hitting from all angles endeared our Bulls to the hearts of basketball followers everywhere, and proved our exist- ence as a basketball power. In the finals they challenged the defending cham- pions, Virginia Union. With a capacity crowd cheering for a new champion, the Bulls proceeded al(mg the glory road to a 43-34 half-time lead. However, with only two minutes remaining, the lead had dwindled down to three points. Thereafter Virginia Union Pan- thers took over and won. The Bulls were proud in defeat and were still idolized by the crowds. Their exciting basketball had won them the admiration and respect of all foes. I also wish to thank Mr. Col in Edwards, our photographer, who was at our beck-and-call when we needed him most.
