We, realizing this privilege, have maybe unconsciously let duty subdue our initial precepts. Yet while stumbling through our debut in journalism, our zeal has been unquenchable. Our paramount objective is to perpetuate our golden college days here at Smith. If in our attempt at animating these fleeting moments, we do please our candid public, then we are eternally grateful. The Bull Staff OUR CAMPUS DEDICATION Too long has the vigilance and the efficiency of our night watchman been o ' erlookecl. The ungodly hours, the bitter cold, the drenching rains, have found our nocturnal guardian impeccably impcrturbed. To this unsung protectorate whose mute lo ' e for our Alma Mater is only audible to all those who respect him, we do dedicate this yearbook, with esteem and gratitude. The Bull Staff Paae Seven DR. HARDY LISTON PRESIDENT I have peculiar pleasure in extending greet- ings to the Class of 1951. In a sense, I am a member of the Class. We started as freshmen together— I in my first year as President of the Uni ' ersity and you in your first year in college. As parting time comes, I trust you shall find that you are held to your Alma Mater and to one the other by spiritual bonds and that this bcjok shall be an instrument to that end. I would leave with you the word UNDER- STANDING. One of the major aims of your college course should be to ' seek UNDER- STANDING-Understanding of the physical universe, of society and its institutions, of man and human relations, and of God. I hope that your four years in college have given vou a good start on the wav to UNDER- STANDING and that through the fuller un- derstanding of vour generation our world ma ' hnd and maintain peace. Smith U 7 St. Augustine ...32 Smith U 14 Delaware State ..25 Smith U 6 Howard 7 Smith U Winston-Salem State Teachers ... Smith U 7 Bethune-Cookman 27 Smith U 13 Shaw 7 The Golden Bulls of Johnson C. Smith University approached the 50 Campaign with a grim determination. Coach Jack Brayboy thought that this would be the season of seasons. With the returning of twenty-two lettermen. Smith was statistically a veteran team. As the first game drew nearer, the team ' s tackling, blocking, and play-making became sharper. The last week-end in September an impatient herd of Bulls met the St. Paul Saints at Lawrenceville, Virginia. From the opening whistle to the final gun, the team from Charlotte dominated the field of play. Coach Brayboy used every one except the water boy, and if I remember correctly he was warming up. In this game the entire team was ready. The following week, Mr. Bobby Clark, Roland Miles, and the St. Augustine team motored to our campus. A cocky team of Smith men contemplated a pushover. That fateful day, Mr. Clark and Miles did everything but dance on the gridi- ' on. They faked, passed and literally ran us out of the stadium. A valuable lesson was learned that dark day. Northward to the flat land of Delaware the enriched Bulls traveled. A beautiful Saturday afternoon a small Smith team took on Mighty Delaware State. The men from State outweighed the Charlotte group twenty pounds to the man. Revenge lurked in the hearts of the fighting Bulls. Throughout the day the men consistently shouted, Let ' s take them to the Bull Pen. The cards were stacked wrong. Statistically Delaware won the game but Smith men outplayed them. Not once during the entire contest did we kick. The records will prove that they booted many. I shall never forget the hear t of Will Allison and Napoleon Nelson. No greater fighting spirit was displayed by anyone than these two. Pflge Sixty-one FOOTBALL ; ' : ■ . ' C-- I! Abram King William Perry George Flanigan Louis King Page Sixty-two -AiGENE Poole WiLEERT DORSEY Homecoming, Alumni, dances, and parades, The Bisons from Howard ventured to the sunny South. On the squared rectangle of Memorial Field the two teams locked. For Howard, there was nothing that day. They were bottled in their every attack. Midway through the second quarter Little Horse Blackwell intercepted a flat pass and scooted thirty-five yards for the first touchdown. We missed the conversion and the score at halftime was si.x to nothing favor Smith. The second half brought a fast changing, hard running Howard eleven back. Smith men asked for no favors and gave no ground. The two evenly matched teams were fighting it out. Someone had to meet its Waterloo. Five minutes before the final gun, the Bisons pushed over the goal stripes. The overflowing stadium waited and the referee threw up his hands; the conversion was good. A heart-breaker was lost. Under the lights at Winston-Salem the belligerent Rams encountered the seasoned Bulls. Long will the fans remember the stonewall of the Smith line. Eight times were the Rams within the four yard marker. So close and yet so far. within sight of the goal line they failed to score. The game was high lighted by a seventy-five yard passing run which climaxed on the T. C. seven. Here the game ended. The same story was repeated. The Golden Bulls had outplayed them but not outscored the less formidable opponents. To the citrus groves, and the swaying palms, we motored to Daytona Beach. I believe that the Florida weather was too much for us; perhaps the Bethune fellows played a minor roll. The student body wel- comed us with open arms. They even sponsored a dance in our honor. Yes, we lost this one too. The score was 27 to 7, but you can believe that everyone had a good time basking in short sleeves. The Turkey Day classic saw two teams fighting to stay off the bottom of the C.LA.A. This was the last collegiate game of eleven seniors and the team was determined that it would be a victory. The Golden Bulls out fo.xed, out ran, and out played the Bears from Raleigh. The halftime score was seven to nothing in favor of the Charlotte crew. Midway through the third period, we again drew blood. With a major portion of the fourth quarter completed, the Bears scored on a quick opener. The conversion was good. The tallies now stood at 13 to 7 favor Smith. A desperate Shaw team bepan pulling from the bag. Rereatediv their passes clicked. As all seemed lost, a Bull reached into the air and interceoted a beautiful pass. The Golden Bulls ran the clock out with run- ning plays. In conclusion, the writer would like to inject a personal note. Although Smith did not enjoy a win- ning team figuratively, I think that we had one of the best teams in the C.LA.A. The fellows were great and I believe that each of us profited greatly from the relationship. Never shall I forget those manv long hours spent in the Bull Pen practicing until after dark and eating late, experiencing sweet victory and bitter defeat. It would be impossible not to remember Buddy Elmer, Pickett, Nap Nelson, Psycho Davis, Pepper Yates, and many others. In my treasure chest of experiences, these will forever loom. Days spent on the gridiron of Smith are as much a part of me as the Science Hall. In short, I cherish every precious minute. To you, the Golden Bulls of 1951, I extend a hearty good luck and make every block and tackle count. George Flapper Flanigan BASKETBALL William Jones, Sophomore . . .
