Nineteen liundied hh ' marks the middle iil a eenturv whieh has been hlled with phencimenal movements, developments and events. The list would include two devastating world wars, a world wide depression, political upheavals with the rise and fall of governments and empires; the growth of ideologies that challenge our own democracy and Christianity; gains and losses in economics, in religion and on the freedom front; advances in scientific discoveries and in the applications of science to the work of the world and the welfare of man; great strides in health and prolongation of life, in social welfare, in education, and in human relations. Like a powerful bulldozer cutting a new highway through forest, rough terrane, and hills. such movements, developments, and events of the first half of the twentieth century have come a long way and fast. It is important that a follow-up crew come behind and smooth up the road bed over which man can move forward to peace, human dignity and rights, security, under- standing, and a high and sustaining faith. The makers and readers of this book have a great challenge and opportunity as they mo e into the second half of this dynamic and, till now, chaotic century. My wish is that Smith men and women may be adequate to such a challenge, which comes first to the Class of 1950. May Smith and you never fail. My greetings and best wishes to each ol you. H.
