the nineteen kunarea fift ' BULL Volume IX f- ' ubildnecl bu he Aunlor una Senior K taAAeS of JDHNSDN C. SMITH UNIVERSITY CHARLOTTE. NORTH CAROLINA Robert L. Dingus Editor-in-Chief Copyright 1950 Elbert E. Nance Business Mayiager John Corky Associate Editor FDREWDRD The enormous task which we have taken unto ourseKes in the pages that Follow was not taken as a light task but as one which assumed the role of a major responsibility. It has been a great privilege and a pleasure to bring to you some of the episodes of our college days. It is our sincere hope that in the years which lie ahead you may be able to thumb through these pages for a glimpse of an old classmate or friend and realize that all the success we may achieve was due to the interest manifested in us while at our dear ole Smith. Page Two DEDICATION In oratctul admission, sincere appreciation and lieartv congratulations for a life well spent in help- ing to build a bigger and better Smith, and for invaluable assistance and guidance to many young men and women in the field of education, we the staff of the 1950 Bull respectfully dedicate this book as a culmination of their efforts to Dr. Robert L. Douglass, Mr. Stanley H. Adams and Mr. William C. Donnell. The Bull Staff of 1950 Page Three Nineteen liundied hh ' marks the middle iil a eenturv whieh has been hlled with phencimenal movements, developments and events. The list would include two devastating world wars, a world wide depression, political upheavals with the rise and fall of governments and empires; the growth of ideologies that challenge our own democracy and Christianity; gains and losses in economics, in religion and on the freedom front; advances in scientific discoveries and in the applications of science to the work of the world and the welfare of man; great strides in health and prolongation of life, in social welfare, in education, and in human relations. Like a powerful bulldozer cutting a new highway through forest, rough terrane, and hills. such movements, developments, and events of the first half of the twentieth century have come a long way and fast. It is important that a follow-up crew come behind and smooth up the road bed over which man can move forward to peace, human dignity and rights, security, under- standing, and a high and sustaining faith. The makers and readers of this book have a great challenge and opportunity as they mo e into the second half of this dynamic and, till now, chaotic century. My wish is that Smith men and women may be adequate to such a challenge, which comes first to the Class of 1950. May Smith and you never fail. My greetings and best wishes to each ol you. H. Mosely George Anderson William Poston Herbert McClain PiiiJe Sixty Pa e Sixty two EDITORIAL It was hard to bclic c, but true in every detail, the Golden Bulls of Johnson C. Smith University were the Iodine Bowl Champions of 1949. Amazing said some, Terrific said others, that this heretofore weak football team finallv ripped and tore its way into a position among the rank and file of the Negro College Sports World. Perhaps the contigents of a school with a more successful football team would not be too elated over winning two games on the regular schedule, and a post season championship but to the followers of the Golden Bulls this achievement marked the beginning of a New Da for Smith. Since 1945, the Sons and Daughters of the Gold and Blue saw what was once a mighty force in the C.I. A. A. peter out to be the team similar to that of Jerkwater U. Now Smith didn ' t fall down completelv in each sport that she was represented in, for in 1945 and again in 1947 she sent a basketball team to the Championship Tournament of the C.I. A. A. But other than that, Smith has been a faithful financial member of the Association. Just what was this phenomena that seemed to bring about a Neo de ' elopment in the sport scenes at Smith? Well, the administration final- lv realized that it takes monev and adequate coaching personnel to produce winners. With this in mind they went to work. Coach Bvrd Crudup was made head of the Athletic Depart- ment, thus enabling him to direct his attention to a more intensified physical program for the entire Universitx ' . Jack Bravbov, an immortal in the annals of great football phuers, returns to ' ■ u«aisaaia ' -jrA !L ' ijt .aiii.i ii.3teaw |iiE Yates — George McGill Co-Cnptahis his Alma Mater as head football coach. And Cal- in Irvin remained to continue his work as head basketball mentor. With a well experienced coaching staff the next step was to secure good plavers. Boys with good scholarship as well as great athletic abilitv are being inspired to win their laurels at Smith Universitv. The building up process is a slow one but Smith is well on her wav. The future can certain- Iv be looked forward to as being a bright one. To the Senior athletes who will be leaving with the class of ' 50, we will sav thanks fellows for vour efforts in pushing the name of the Gold and Blue to the fore once again. Sports Editors P«ge Sixty-three 1949 Football Season In Retrospect Just for the sheer thrill of it, let ' s recapture some of the nc cr-to-be hirootten memories of the 1949 football season. BOOM!
