Wh? In Memoriam-The Building May Be On February 14, 1981, fire swept across john Tyler campus destroying ninty percent of the sixteen year old facility. Firemen, alarmed at dawn on that Valentines Day, had the blaze under control about 8:30 a.m. The Fire MarshaI's report stated the fire evidently started in several main points. Academic classes received the most damage, with the Drama and Science departments in total destruc- tion, Permanent records were saved, but no office area survived. Many school treasures such as lockers, books, art work, numerous trophies, and various irreplaceable john Tyler publications went up in flames. One of the most deeply felt was the Kenya lion, which symbolized lT's spirit and pride. Three days after the fire all JT students moved across town to share a split schedule with their rival, Robert E. Lee.
