The purpose should be to promote the history and traditions of Texas. The Tyler High School Library must re- ceive the Southwestern Historital Quarterly and the junior Historians must have a teaching s onsor. Among other things the mem ers have gone on an Indian dig for relics. This club is a very active organization of which John Tyler High School is proud. or S Above are pictured the officers of the junior Historian Club with their sponsor Mr. Robert Glover. In the Robert E. Lee game jon Van Orden broke the tie and saved the game for the Lions. XY'ith only ninety seconds left in the game. Van Orden. who had been sent in to kick a fourth down field goal, weaved through the Rebels line and taught .1 pass thrown by quarterback jerry Richardson and then stepped into the end zone for the tally, l-le then kicked the extra point. The fleet-footed john Tyler Lions made .1 second- half comeback which ended in a tie with South Oak Cliff of Dallas. The Bears were rated a two touchdown favorite over .lohn Tyler. but someone forgot to tell the high-spirited Lions. The Lions insured their second victory of the season when they scored four touchdowns in the last half. Bobby XVatkins was responsible for two of the last touchdowns. The mighty Lions roared past the Corsicana Tigers in a 25-O clash. The Lions with the assistance of fleet- footed halfback Randy Wfilson and versatile Jerry Richardson took their third victory of the year. The Lions took their first defeat of the year when they met Wfaco at XVaco Stadium. The scoring was a topsy-turvy affair with both john Tyler and Wfaco exchanging the lead several times in the game. Unfortunately for the Lions. XVaco got the final tally of the game which gave them a 22-19 lead and vic- tory over john Tyler. Glendon Turbeville and Richard Allen, two rela- tively new faces on the Lion squad, were responsible for a majority of the Lions yards rushing in the game with Birdville. The score was 29-27. Paced by Turbeville, the john Tyler Lions shook off a slight case of first-quarter jitters to defeat the Texarkana Tigers in their opening distritt 8-AAAA contest in Girm Stadium. The john Tyler Lions edged the Lufkin Panthers in a topsy-turvy affair in whith the visiting team came from behind after trailing 20,0 at the end of the third quarter in a thrill a minute 20-16 game in Rose Stadium. The Lions fought the top-rated Longview Lobos to a scoreless tie in one ol the most extiting clashes of the season in Lobo Stadium. Tyler was credited with the win because of penetrations. The john Tyler Lions with the able assistanre of their fleet-footed halfback, Randy XVilson, belted the hlarshall Maverics 39-1-l in the final district clash of the year at Rose Stadium. Regardless of the outcome, an exciting game was expected to be unreeled as the underdog Lions tried to continue down that long, tedious road toward the state finals when they played 'Highland Park of Dallas November 27, 1959. but by 10:00 PM that night their dream was shattered by a all-6 win by the Scotties.
