WHITEMAN Secretary MR. P. C. PINKERTON Vicefpresiclent BOARD OF EDUCATION The students of the Tyler Public Schools are grateful to the Board of Education for their untiring ef- forts in planning for a progressive educational program. As the city of Tyler has grown, the public schools have advanced. Extensive building programs have been pro- moted, and the curriculum of the high school has kept pace with the changing times. As the citizens of Tyler enter the post war period, the school board is making preparations for better building facilities to meet the needs of an increasing popula- tion. A curriculum, broadened by the addition of new vocational courses, looks forward towards training the student body ade- quately for good citizenship. - 'H' -1' TO THE MEMBERS OF THE GRAD- E'EN'1' ' UATING CLASS OE THE TYLER SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL: The destructive war has come to an endy but it has left the whole world tired, hungry, and sick. How- ever, the bright star that led the shepherds two thousand years ago to Bethlehem is still shining: and it is pointing the way for peace on earth and for happiness to all who will follow the principles proclaimed by the Prince of Peace. All of the troubles of nations as well as of individuals are directly or indirect- ly due to selfishness and greed. These traits must be eradicated from the hearts of men and rnust be re- placed with understanding and con- sideration and tolerance for those of every race and creed before last- ing peace and joy can come to the world. The destiny of the human race lies in the hands of the youth of the world, particularly in the hands of the youth of America, for the task of bringing about this brotherhood among nations is yours: and it will challenge all of the best powers and skills you possess. As you go out of the public schools to broader fields of endeavor, l commend to you the practice of the Golden Rule, Do unto others as you would have them do to you, as the way to brotherhood and peace. . Very sincerely yours, ,ww Superintendent of Schools l cherish the privilege of congratulat- ing young men and women upon the school for this event truly marks a turning point in life. No matter how many times you may graduate here- after, this is the commencement sea- son which will be most vividly and fondly remembered. You graduate at a crucial moment in world history. The age of atomic energy, of radar, of jet propulsion and of one world is eminent, many new problems and opportunities confront you. It is good to live in such a time, which will require the keenest mental and physical accomplishment, for in such effort you attain your optimum personal development. occasion of their graduation from high ,tk ,.. , Best wishes! Beginning his career in Tyler a number of years ago, he has grown and progressed with the school, becoming a vital part of it. Although no longer a member of the teaching staff, his patient kindly, gentlemanly manner has been a lasting influence on the lives of his pupils, who by their association with him were privileged to learn greater lessons than are to be found in textbooks. Mrs. Rus- sell Watson was named sponsor. Programs following the business meetings were varied: on one occasion the group enjoyed a con- test between two boys and two girls. Q IN MEMCRIAM Rita Ferquson, a member of the sopho- more class, was interested in many school activities. She was ct member of the Medical and Allied Science Club. Those who knew her were quick to recognize her kind and considerate demeanor toward others. These words apply to her, Gentle your voice and smile g she will not be forgotten by those who knew her. Lynette was a member of the senior class and was active in the Iunior His- torians. It will be impossible to forget the kindly personality that was Lynette Campbell. She was shy, but when one knew her, she became a loyal friend. She lives in the heart of all that knew her. te.- :Age- X 'x -l , ,ff 1 Q fl .'v' STUDENT ACTIVITIES I. Senior Day Asse1nbIy Praqram 4. One of the hardest working groups in Tyler High School is the Motion Picture Operators Club that was organized about four years ago to aid the visual educational program of the school. The operators have shown an average of six films a week since school started in September. The club consists of twelve operators and one head operator. When school started, there were about five experienced members: now the club boasts an increase of seven. Under the guidance of Miss Louise Glenn, Mrs. Roy C. Owens, and Mr. Ray Bagwell the operators manage to iron out any difficulties. ln spite of troubles such as broken projectors and films, the operators have come through with shining colors. During the past two semesters Presidents Weldon Squyres and Dorothy Ann Barnett have done remarkable work. Other officers who capably filled their posi- tions are Bob Cook, Vice-President, Dick Arms, Secretary: Harvey Campbell, Parliamentarian, During the spring term Iames Painter, Vice-Presiclenty Vada Steed, Secretary: and Charles Hunt, Parliamentarian, served well. There has been special entertainment for the group as well as interesting programs. Two such programs were on infinity and on the Greeks and their math. The banquet was the social highlight for members of the club. B2 Math Club has been organized about ten years and is sponsored by Miss Cora Evans, Mrs. Harvey Carr, and all other math teachers. Co-op is under the supervision of Mr. Iarnes R, Campbell. The students work each aftemoon in some business or industrial shop for practical experience and a nominal wage. In this manner they get the practical know how of working with other workers and for an actual employer. They also have to learn that they are working on other people's property or giving service to customers which must be of quality to satisfy. The Co-op class was organized in September, 1940, as a beginning of business and industrial vocational education. The business people of Tyler made a success of the program by putting their cooperation behind it As a result of the success of this Co-op program, several additional vocational classes have been organized and are now operating. Many students of the first Co-op class are still working at the business in which they first started and are happy and successful in it. ll: BIOLOGY CLUB FIRST ROW: Harold Willingham, Rudolph Rosenstein, Eugene Hunter, Iudy Winn, Ierry Shelton, Gracie Faulkner, Thomas Simpson, Virginia I-Iullum, Billie Io Forston, Elizabeth Billingsley. CALENDAR 10-Today everyone rushes to school and new classes, new seats, new rooms, new subjects, new teachers, new friends-a new life. 14-Tyler's Lions travel to Lufkin for the opening football game of the season and return on the short end of the score. 21-Tyler's football fans see the first appearance of the Blue Brigade and Band of '45 while watching the Tyler eleven defeat Iacksonville in the first home game of the season. Then to celebrate this victory Tyler entertains with a dance in the gym. 28-Again the Lions venture from their den, this time to win. l-4-The entire school is shot in a mass massacre for the ALCALDE before the camera of Mr. Cedars. 5-Austin's Maroons are certainly full of pep on the gridiron: but Ty1er's Lions are really hep on the dance floor. 10--Fire Prevention Week once more brings themes for the seniors and juniors and posters for the talented artists. 12-Tyler's Kling of Beasts roars past Gladewater's growling Bears in an exciting district game. 18-The Tigers from the border are good, but the Lions from Tyler are better. 26-Sulphur Springs tums into a real river and sur- prisingly upsets the local aggregation. Both teams feel better after the dance. 9-The Green and White really outdo the Blue and White this day. This gives Tyler its first district defeat. 10-The male population procedes from classroom to classroom with exceedingly cautious runs and is ever on guard against the Dogpatch belies. Yet, even members of the track team are dragged to the dance. l6MTyler Lions fairly put Kilgore's Bulldogs in the dog house at the 1atter's stadium. 22-Annual Thanksgiving Day football game with Marshall, and again we lose our chance to grab the district crown by losing this game. 22-3-At this point in the long series of events the school is once more deserted while we all reverently give thanks. ' 6-Alberts Mexican Village swells with music of Los Teianos at their banquet. 7-As a fitting reward for their purchasing of Victory Bonds many students pile into jeeps for a whiz around town. l4-That Smith family certainly is crazy, and we'll not forget the performance of the cast. 18-Grcians and moans are heard from late purchasers 21- because ALCALDE sales close today. The long awaited Christmas Dance is here, and the students spend a pleasant evening dancing in the QYTU' 21-Christmas holidays once more. No more school for a while, and no more lessons until after Santa Claus has visited our house. 4-The number iuqqlersu of the B2 Math Club have banquet. Ian. Ian. lan. Ian. lan. l an. lan. Feb. Feb.
