Mr. Ed Hennig, Mr. jake Edwards, and Mr. Roy Moore Football, 1939 The Tyler Lions opened the 1939 football sea- son September 8, with jacksonville at Lion sta- dium. This year's team was a questionable one, but the boys came through with flying colors. The Hrst half ended with the score 19-6, but during the last half the Lions ran wild, bringing their points up to 53. Tyler really expected a tough game with Palestine on account of previous records, but Tyler won 50 to O. The Athens game was really closer and harder fought than the score would indicate, with Tyler 40 and Athens 0. Kil- gore started right off as if they were going to win this one, after the third quarter there was no more scoring, and the score remained 28 to 7 in favorof the Lions. Friday, the thirteenth, was Tyler's unlucky day. Over-confidence may have struck the Lions in the face, for Greenville tied them, 13 to 13. The game was full of thrills and each team came from behind to score. The Lions came back strong after a slow first half, and resumed their championship form, defeating Gladewater by a good score. Tyler's little Lions tumbled over the big Texarkana Tigers by a very safe margin. Tyler should have had more scores than they did in the first half, but they were still ahead by 14-0 at the end of the half. Texarkana came back firm, but the team couldn't score. The third quarter was pretty even, but in the fourth Tyler scored two more touchdowns. This completed the scoring and a very good game. FOOTBALL . . . 1939 The Longview game brought the second blemish on the Lions' record, and it hurt very much as it was Longview that caused it. The game was full of thrills, and both teams were constantly within scoring distance. Longview scored first and was ahead at the end of the first half, 6-0. Tyler started passing in the second half and finally scored late in the third quarter. The game was played on a wet field where the heavier Longview team had the advantage, and the Lions might have made it a different story on a dry field. Waco really put the third spot on our record. Tyler was roundly outplayed in nearly every de- partment in this game, but they were trying just as hard as they ever did. The Lions were just up against a bigger and faster team. You may think the score, Waco 25, Tyler 7, was bad, but we hadn't seen all of Waco yet. Tylcr's rejuvenated Lions took Marshall and the second district title in as many years into camp in this game. This was the one that really counted, and we were surely glad that Tyler came out on top with the score 25 to 7 in favor of the Lions. Under a hot steaming sun in Nacogdoches, Tyler pulled the bi-district title out of the fire in the last half of the game. The Lions came back determined in the second half, and soon they had a nine point lead. With this win Tyler became one of the eight best teams in the state. This game was more exciting than the score would show. Waco scored four touchdowns on intercepted passes. By this loss, Waco 40, Tyler 13, the Lions were ousted from the state champion- ship race, but they were the only team besides Lubbock to get as far as the quarter-finals two years in a row. This game ended Tyler High School's colorful football schedule, but it was a very successful one in the rooter's opinion. Though they did not win too many games, they played each opponent to a close game. Several of the games were decided in an overtime period. All on the squad enjoyed this basketball year very much. The boys played good, fast basketball and were always perfectly square about the rulings. This shows that the boys got a lot out of basket- ball. GTHER SPORTS, 1940 TENNIS Tyler was host to the District 15 Interscholastie League net tournaments April 8 and 9. The tour- nament was a great success and members of dif- ferent teams expressed appreciation to the city of Tyler for its excellent tournament. The results of the Tyler High netmen in the first round were as follows: Hyman Roosth, the Tyler High's singles representative, defeated the Troup representativeg in the boys' doubles division, the Tyler players, Billy Crockett and Melvin Sigman, were eliminatel by the boys from Kilgore. Mary Ellen Liles won her first match from the representative from Union Grove. Ann Grothous and Gerry Parker lost out in the doubles division to Athens. In the second round Hyman Roosth lost out to the Athens' singles champion, and Mary Ellen Liles also was defeated by the Athens girl singles representa- tive. Despite the losses, the tennis teams had an enjoyable and worthwhile season, and played matches with many neighboring towns. GOLF The golf team of Tyler High School, though quite young, fared very well in the matches played this season. john Pace, Walton Roberts, George Clarke, and Charles Finlayson composed the golf team. John Pace won an invitation tournament held by Kilgore High School in Kilgore, and he and the other players plan to enter the state tour- nament of high school players in Dallas in May. OTHER SPORTS, 1940 TRACK The track team of 1940 entered its first track meet March 30. The meet was the first of the East Texas Relays, and was held in Palestine. Tyler High School's team did not carry off all the honors, but Coach Ed Hennig said he was pleased with the way they came out. As Tyler High did not have a track team last year, this was the first track meet that many of the boys had ever entered. Tyler tied for ninth place with four fourth places. Charles Tunnell placed fourth in the pole vault, joe Dean Bailes ran fourth in the 220 yard low hurdles, Dfck Allen won fourth place in the 440 yard dash, and Wayne Burnette ran fourth in the 220 yard dash. Tyler High's Lions ended their track season on April 13, after the district track meet. Tyler finished in a tie for eighth place.
