THE SEASON Lions, 43: Jacltsonville, 0 The Lions opened the 1938 season in grand style Friday night, September 9, by romping over the -lack- sorivillt' lndians to the tune of 43 too. They completely outplayed the Indians and kept the ball in Lion territory the whole game with the exception of one tirne. The honor of scoring the first Lion touchdown went to Clar- ence Mehlinn, junior halfhacl-4, on a 34-yard reverse. Tyler showed much power in this game and established themselves as favorites to win the district title. Lions, 34, Norfh Dallas, 6 The Lions displayed a strong running attack and an excellent defense September I7 hy smashing the North Dallas Bulldogs 3.1, to 6. They scored six points in the First quarter, I3 in the second, and rg in the final. The Bulldogs' only score came at the start of the second half on a long run. However, the Lions' entire second string was in the game. The play of the Lions in this game made them favorites to many of the 3,000 Dallas people who witnessed the game, or should we say- massacre? Lions, l3g Palesfine, 7 The Lions almost suffered defeat at Palestine. Sep- tember 23, having to come from behind to score a touchdown in the final quarter to win I3 to 7. Scor- ing in the first quarter. Tyler looked very good and it seemed that Palestine would he another victim hy a T501 topheavy margin. The XVildcats' defense tightened, however, and they were leading 7 to 6 at the half. It was a different story in the second half, and the Lions finally pushed over the winning touchdown. Al- though the st-ore was tight, the Lions showed that they truly outplayed Palestine by making I3 hrst downs to the iVildeats' six. Lions, 523 Afhens, 3 The Lions won their first conference game with ease September zo by swamping the heavier Athens Hor- nets gz to 3. Athens stayed on even terms with the Lions in the first quarter, even going into the lead early in the game by a field goal. Coming back with that never-down spirit, however, the Lions soon iced the game away. They were leading IS to 3 at the end of the first half. It yy as the same story the second half, with the Lions' making 34 more points. They made a very good showing, and their power was dis- played even more than in any preceding game. Lions, 275 Kilgore, 0 The Lions were l1uffaloed for one period Friday night, Uetolner 7, but after the opening period they turned on the heat and ran over the Kilgore Bulldogs hy a st-ore of 27 to o. lt was not until the middle of the second period that the Lions were able to score against the much heavier Kilgore line.
