Tyler, 26: Jacksonville, 6 Our first combat was with jackson- ville. Although the Lions held the up- per hand throughout the game, they had to turn on all their power to chalk up a crushing victory over the Indians. Ver- hal Duke and lvl. Jones were standouts in offensive work. Preston Reynolds, John Perritt, and Gordon Siegel paced the linemen. THE SEASCDN E461 ets here at Lion Stadium, hut a last half onrush by the hig down-staters was not to he denied. Tyler, bg Greenville, 0 Recovering a fumble in the first quar- ter, the Tyler Lions scored a touchdown a few seconds later that carried them to a 6-O victory over the Greenville Lions at Greenville. lr was the first win for Tyler ever recorded on Greenvillt-'s field. VV. RI. lvlumford did the ball carrying. while Gordon Siegel was outstanding at center. Tyler, 7: Kilgore, 6 One scintillating run and a perfect kick from placement for the extra point were the extent of the offensive damage done by the Lions, but that gave the boys in blue and white a 7-6 decision over the Kilgore Bulldogs in the opening District 0 tilt for both teams. The Lions did all the scoring during the first min- utes of the game. Tyler, 2Ig Athens, 0 Opening with an offensive that en- abled them to sweep down the field for three touchdowns in the first half, the Lions defeated the Hornets, 21-0, in a non-conference tilt. The Lions staged a brilliant brand of playing for the first half, but did not make such a good show- ing during the last half. Klumford was responsible for I4 of the points scored, while Gordon Siegel raced the linemen. Tyler, 26: Gladewater, 6 The Lions completely humbled the Gladewater Bears, 26-0, in a District O encounter. The victory enabled the Lions to keep their perfect conference rating and also sounded a warning to other teams with championship aspira- tions. The Lions used only their mini- mum strength throughout the game. Charles Cooney, Verbal Duke, and VV. RI. hlumford were outstanding in their performance. Tyler, I3g Texarkana, 0 Tyler remained in the undefeated Dis- s the Lions wair of intercepted passes into trict Q conference race a turned a 1 touchdowns to defeat the Texarkana Tigers, I3-0. Paced by VV. RI. Blum- ford and ,lack Powell, the Lions had the situation well in hand, keeping the Tigers in their own territory most of the game. Tyler, 7: Longview, 27 lfveryone went over to Longview for the annual Armistice game. A heavy turf made the playing exceedingly difii- cult. Behind one of the best blocking machines in the state, Dandy Dick Mil- ler and his teammates downed the Tyler Lions, 27-7. The result was a bitter dis- appointment for many, but everyone was loud in his praise for the doughty Lions. ,hr i -1 gl ei, Ron- one: Preston Reynolds, Benton Harris, Alfred Temple, Verbal Dulce, W. Remember Longview . lVe all remember that Longview game! The student body, supported by a crowd of other rabid football fans, made the trip to Longview in order to boost the boys on, and were welcomed by the Longview group with a great show of enthusiasm and friendly bantering. lfveryone was expecting a jam-up game, and was far from being disappointed. Those boys of ours fought! There has seldom been a more spectaeular game played than the melee staged at Longview Armistice Day. The turf was soggy and muddy, but despite this handicap the boys turned in an exceptionally line performance. Behind a perfectly clicking line, Dandy Dick hliller led his Lohoes over the Lion goal three times in the first half. After the half, the 'liyler Lions settled down to hard, stubborn football and held the Loboes back, although the Loboes did score once again during the third quarter, but only after hard, strenuous battering at the stolid Lions. During the latter quar- ter of the game, the Lions scored a touchdown. The game ended with the Lions at the small end of the score, 27-7. XV. ill. Klumford and Gordon Siegel teamed up and turned in a commendable performance. lfvery man on the team played a clean, hard game, and was due more than a little praise. Perhaps everyone didn't get what he wanted, but we beamed with pride at the manner in which the Lions played, and if in the coming season, Lion meets Lobo on the gridiron, it's bound to be a different tale. i481 ,rl '-.:i .fT2 lg !1rl2 'f'4'sf- -w mfgl'g'. W- '- -Q .1 B Squod Football Team There hasn't been much fuss and ruckus over the B Squad Team, but every- one will have to admit that those young Lions played an excellent brand of football throughout the season, having been bested by only one team, Sand Flat. Under the watchful eye of Coach Roy Moore, the boys worked hard and brushed themselves up for the season and then started roaring. They romped over Browns- boro, Trinidad, Van, Lindale, and Kilgore. Then the Lions ran up against their first defeat for the season. Sand Flat stopped them with the score 6-0. All the boys played fair, hard football and are due not a little praise for their performance. We're looking for some of these boys to be showing their wares on the regular squad this fall. Outstanding in their play for the season were Walton Roberts, Doyle Stegall, Lloyd Brooks, Floyd Brooks, and Elton Whisenhunt. Footlooll Schedule, l938 Sept Sept Sept Oct. Oct. Oct. Nov. Basketball The basketball season opened here at Tyler High with the usual group of clamoring aspirants, all eager to show their ability under the watchful eyes of Coach Ed Hennig. There was only one letter man, Stuart Hunt, back from last year's squad, and he was chosen as the captain of the team. After working hard and fast during the practice session, the quintet moved into action against the Noonday group. They won over Noonday but lost the following game with Kilgore at Kilgore. They met the same fate with the Mineola group. After losing the game with Marshall, a win was chalked up for the Lions over the Noonday hoys. This was repeated in their encounter with Mineola. After losing a game with Kilgore, the Tyler group went to the tournament at Kilgore. They won over Kilgore, but lost the fol- lowing fracas with Gilmer. This latter game put the Lions out of the running. -an Q7 Run' one: Nlurphy Frederick. T. Mclflvany. Stuart Hunt, Clarence McMinn, Durwood Mumford, james Rodgers. Row two: Alfred Temple, Raymond Burt, Wlnlron Roberts. Doyle Stegall, Harlin MclVlinn, Wfarrcn Howard, Jimmy Waltorl. Row lhrrr: Billy Adams, Earl Lawver, liarl Dean, Elton Whisenhunt. Although the Lions did not turn in a brilliant performance, they did play a very creditable game of ball throughout the season. Every member of the team put that old Tyler High spirit into all his playing and did his best. We couldn't ask more of them. Knowing all this, we can be as proud of them as though they had gone to the highest brackets in the playoff. The boys who won their T's for 1938 were Stuart Hunt fcaptainl, Ray- mond Burt, Clarence McMinn, T. McElvaney, Murphy Frederick, Dur- wood Mumford, Jimmie Walton, and Alfred Temple fmanagerj. These boys deserve a great deal of praise for their work in the cage, and we are proud of them. We're all looking for a great team next year, as we will have a larger group of letter men to return for service, and we know they will do great things in their particular field. E931 TRACK The 1937 Tyler High School track team was composed of prac- tically inexperienced boys. They all worked hard for the gruelling grind facing them at the District Meet, and during the Meet, turned in a very worthy record, although they did not take away the hon- ors. Guy McNallie and Jack Morris were the only two entries to gain a position in the finals, Guy having placed third in the high jump, while Morris placed in the broad jump. Those raking part in the District Meet were Jack Ingram, Guy McNallie, Robert Graham, Max Waller, L. E. Adair, Robert Smith, Billy Matt Edwards, Joseph Jackson, Jack Morris, and Leslie Jeter. Looking over the group of aspirants for 1938, I see that the coach has fine material to work with and will surely put a winning group of boys on the cinder path. TENNIS The Tyler High tennis team has been doing things up in style. Billy Owens, the number 1 man of the team, is boys' champion of East Texas and of both tournaments of the Tyler Tennis Club. N. L. Webster and Grady Faulk are the top doubles team of Tyler High. They hold the Tyler Center Doubles Championship and with Owens went to Culver, Indiana, to enter the National Junior and Boys' Cham- pionship matches. The tennis team is composed of Billy Owens, N. L. Webster, Billy Reily, Leon Raper, and Grady Faulk. These boys are doing splendid work and we're looking toward them for a great team. IQ541 ,il N lf 1 . L.. .gr - ,NWI V - MLQ. . ,, MR. School has opened and are there groans-but we're glad. Football season opens with a bang by our defeating j'ville. Already a holiday for the Fair. You know, school's all right. It makes one enjoy holi- days all the more. Our dream is to beat Port Arthur, but this isn't the time, for our visitors take away the big end of the score. OCTOBER The Rose Festival is here again and a time of excitement for everyone: roses, football, coronation, etc. You know-fun! We are appeased in our football by a start- ling victory over Kilgore. Bobol the Miracle Man who changes noth- ing into everything comes to visit us. lOught to do something with some people's mindslj Nothing can stop us now, we hope. Glade- water takes a beating from our boys. I do believe we have a chance this year. We beat Texarkana today. NOVEMBER Hutchins de boid man ascends our door- step and we are all eating birdseed. Someone came to our school today that we really can brag about. Gypsy Smith was here, and it really gave us a thrill to have such an honored man talk to us. Bang! That's just our chance of cham- pionship in football collapsing. Longview has one against us again by a 27-7 victory over us. May I add here that the Blue Brigade is at its best this year and has turned all eyes to Tyler, even though we have been left behind in the race. Long live 'eml P. S.-We got a holiday today, by the way. It's Thanksgiving, and, believe me, we are thankful for this peaceful nation. We also play Marshall just for fun, and we beat. You can't keep a good team down. Once down is enough--don't you think? DECEMBER Nothing happened today except all the stu- dents are forgetting good times and are really studying. i831 Out for the holidays-and we can say we are strictly ready for them. It snowed one day, so it is the perfect white fa little brownishj Christmas. JANUARY A lot of bedraggled looking people return to school today. Uust between you and me, I think they are the students that left the school in December.l Robert Raines, gifted negro singer, enter- tains the students when he stops here on his way to California. Mrs. Saunders gives another marvelous senior play. Mid-term's over, and if Pm not mistaken, a lot of people's good times are-including mine and the rest of the school, FEBRUARY Mr. Smiley, former Tyler High student, who is now in the R. O. T. C., talks to us on the importance of the army and navy expansion. Very interesting. Mr. Tayloe brings two people to assembly that amaze all with their psychic ability. Are some people. embarrassed? MARCH Tony Sarg and his famous Marionettes visit Tyler High School presenting Robinson Crusoe and The Mikado. Mr. Hodges tells us about his trip to Waslr- ington. Umm. Do we envy him? First day of exhibit in gymnasium. Surely lots of hard work in it. Sale of Girls' Week ribbons. Pay program, Not Tonight, by speech class. Exhibit still on and teachers arriving from all over Texas to attend a Teachers' Meet this week- end. Sale of ribbons still on. Lucille Elmore group brought by the ALCALDE. Surely was good. Girls' Forum in charge of assembly. We know all about Apache Land now! Girls make good teachers in most of the classes. Athletic Day and BIG plans for week- end. So long-to press I e I :rig sc. This liquid turns blue if your unknown is basic, and it turns red if the unknown is acid. Sorry, but I'm color blind, apologized the brain trust. Have you got anything with a bell on it? 1 1 1 Miss Peters: A fool can ask more questions than a wise man can answer. George: That's why I fiunkedf' 1 1 1 Knitting gives Doris Lee something to think about while she is talking. E841 The spinster, shocked by the language used by the two men repairing the telephone wire near her house, wrote to the company to com- plain. The foreman was ordered to report the happening to his superiors. Me and Bill Winterbottom were on this job, he reported. I was up on the telephone pole and accidentally let some hot lead fall on Bill and it went down his neck. Then he called up to me, 'You really must be more careful, Harry. ' 1 1 1 A penny saved, or two of such, VVouldn't buy you very much. 1 1 1 A committee is something that saves minutes and wastes hours. 1 1 1 A boy who wished to become a lawyer got himself a job in the oflice of an attorney, but after a single week of it he quit. An acquaint- ance, seeing him at home in the morning, asked how he liked the profession of law. It's lousy, said jack. I'm sorry now that I learned it. 1 1 1 Mary had a chew of gum, She chewed it loud and slow, And everywhere that Mary went That gum was sure to go. It followed her to school one day VVhich was against the rule, So teacher took the gum away And chewed it after school. 1 1 1 You could hear a pin drop in the biology lab. Everyone was deeply engrossed in the entertain- ing diversion of hacking out the entrails of very dead and pungent frogs. The wag of the class approached the table of a fair dissecter dangling an intriguing bit of gizzard from his fingers and, assuming a nauseating Penner-esque pose, gurgled, 'Ya wanna hile duct? 1 1 1 I draw the line at kissing, She said with accents fine, But he was a football hero, And so be crossed the line. Since the Federal Institute was founded on June 4, 1934, more than 350 graduates of the Tyler High School and Tyler Junior College have enrolled with us. We are not only proud of the fact that our own home town young people prefer Federal, but we are glad that we are also able to attract other Hne young people, with excellent scholarship and high morals, to our school. We congratulate the class of 1938 and wish each member every measure of success possible.
