Page Severity-Tlzrce f5PaEst E415 LION LOOK OUTS Ilflflxj' Slzuforfl 395 FOOTBALL In 1929 one of the best football teams that ever attempted to uphold the name of Tyler High was produced. The team was victorious in nine out of eleven games played. The success of the Lions was due to the teamwork of the boys and the splen- did coaching given by Coaches G. A. Foltz, Rufus King and Sam Davis. This year's team was not built around one man, but every player worked to win games for dear old T. H. S. The prospects for next year's football team are very favorable. Since there were only five letter men of 1928 eligible to play in IQZQ, Tyler started out with a prac- tically new team. The Ifjjll team will be chosen from eleven letter men and about forty other good candidates, who are out for the team. bi BASKETBALL The High School Quintet had the best basketball season ever staged by Tyler. The roaring five won the tri-state meet at Shreveport, La., and were edged out of the district meet by the Athens Hornets who, for the last two years, have won the National High School Championship. If Athens and Tyler were not in the same district, the writer believes the State Championship would have been decided by the game of Tyler xs. Athens. Although Tyler loses some of her best players this year, it will not be an easy task for the National Champions or any other team to subdue her quintet, provided they will work hard under the excellent supervision of Coach Foltz. at BASEBALL As far as playing baseball is concerned, for the last few years Tyler High had much better have come out for tiddley-winksg however, with the advent of Coach Davis, the baseball team of 1930 has made a name in this district. The splendid cap- tainship of Herchel VVelsh has added to the strength of the team. Tyler loses only a few of her baseball players this year, and with a promising bunch of rookies coming out, we should have a team entitled to the Championship ot 1931. 365 TRACK TEAM Considering the inexperienced track men that Tyler High had this year, We have had a very successful team. Tyler should take off many honors next year, because the track men will have had more training. .-SW f gag The ff, l, 2 al 'ag Pain' ,fitwlily-l 0112' IN REVIEW gk9UL .. ft align '-Zgy f l In W I - iff ' QD ...- . 6' 1 u inn The well-fed lion is gay It seems Sinn he can eat up Many teams. 4 1 B v T511-.'m 'JL,Q 1-, 1'fL4f-:ff-1-xf'1rjjK Y' V ,, my-. .U X, KI, J RJ! The Apache Council is to act as an executive body through which representatives from the student body and the faculty may come together to discuss the problems and various phases of school activities. During the past year the organization has accomplished and investigated many xaluable problems. Among these are: the nomination of officers of the student body, the selection of the editor and business manager of THE ALCALDE, the discussion and investigation concerning a junior College paper, the beautification of our library, the construction of a constitution to be offered to the student body for adoption. fi Page lVinety-ljzgflit TYLER JUNIOR COLLEGE LIBRARY The Apaches certainly could not say that they did not have an attractive place conducive to study this year. At last the dream of our Chief was realized: to have a separate library for T. J. C. The floor of the library was covered with cork in order to deaden the footsteps of energetic braves and squaws. Twelve long tables with chairs for seventy-two students furnished adequate accommodation for studying. Pictures, hanging flower baskets, ferns, and a revolving book rack added to the beauty of the room. lVIore than two hundred fifty books have been added to the library this year, making a total of about thirteen hundred volumes. Copies of twenty-four current magazines have been available for reference. The Dallas News arrived daily and the New York Times once a week. The Apaches are indeed grateful to Col. T. N. Jones, bliss lklattie Jones, lNIrs. Fitzgerald, and Bliss Howell for their outstanding gifts to the library. The library was open from 8:00 a. m. to 4:30 p. m. for the day students and from 6:oo p. m. to 9:00 p. m. for the night school. Every period found the library occupied, because the Apaches appreciated this beautiful atmosphere for study. get mf '- VME' g' f :' X 4 Page Ninety-IViuc was Honor Society of Tyler Junior College OFFICERS AND MEMBERS li.-XTHERINE H,xRAi.soN . . Perhaps the reason for its popularity was the tennis court presented to the junior College during the first week of Nlarch. These new double courts of shell gravel were completed at the cost of approximately one thousand dollars. The Tennis Club was organized the first six Weeks of the second semester with nearly thirty-five members on the roll. The members of the club kept the courts rolled and lined during the season, a task performed with evident cheerfulness. On April 9th the tennis tournaments began in order to decide the T. sl. XVouldst go thither, oh world soul? Cast thyself aside then and. wrapped in pensiveness, let thy spirit drift away into fantasies. Follow the sun west- ward, for the land of tradition lies beyond the dying day and is reached only after dusk has stolen softly over all the toilworn world. 'Tis dusk now and we have left the cosmos far behind. VVe near the mystic land of T. C. It is here that many happy warriors dwell in peace. Shall we pause to learn the nature of their contented lot? Here is the great teepee, where braves and squaws alike gather to read, study, ponder, and rest. Silence prevails. Taciturnity rules supreme. It is here that one can view the stately totem pole of gold and black, the sacred symbol of the tribes, embodying all the institutions and customs endeared to and revered by the tribesmen. VVe pause to listen to the messages of the Pow VVow. runner of the tribe and bearer of tidings, good and evil. He tells us that there is to be a great feast, given by the Chieftains in honor of the tribesmen. VVe also learn that at a later date the tribesmen will in like manner honor the Chieftains. Next, we enter the council hall where the Apaches meet in solemn conclave, deciding momentous questions of the tribe. VVe then pass out of the main teepee into a tiny wigwam where a group of squaws and braves labour diligently, preserving the records of the brave deeds and exploits of the tribe. This is the wigwam of Chief Alcalde. But we must hurry on. VVe pass five large lodges where council groups convene at due season to guide the destiny of the tribe. Out on the prairies near the village, many Indians play at athletic games to determine who is the strongest and most agile, and the swiftest of foot. Out on the winding, narrow trail many squaws shuffle slowly along. They belong to the Atta Kula Kula's, friends of the white men. VVhat a happy scene to gaze upon! A tribe enjoying peace and contentment. Marry' scalps of past encounters dry in the wind of their teepee entrances. Their store- houses bulge with much food. Dawn creeps above the hills. The morning sun mounts, rosy and refreshed. The mists are gathering over the pine trees, and birds stir in their nests, emitting faint chirps. It is high time for all dreams to end. VVe must leave this land of charm and fascination, for such as we are must not be found stealing about when the rose bears dew. Common folks might not understand. Good-bye, dreamland. Farewell, traditions. Traditions? Yes. They abound within this reservation. Apache traditions. Traditions of T. C. They are more like dreams than traditions, and dreams that shall crowd our fading memories. -Leon Gorsfinf. raw nga iff?-L., Page One Hundred Thirteen J 1'rof. l1'. J. CONTENTMENT As I sit down and gaze out upon God's green earth, I wonder why I'm ever unhappy. Uh, but this world is beautiful if we only view it as a work of God and not a place that is contaminated by every evil deed and thought that man and the devil can devise Now, 'tis springtime: the grass and trees are vivid green while the purple and red of tulips stretch their gorgeous cups high, high up in the sunshine and stand protect- ingly over the gay yellow daffodils, which blossom at their side. I hear the sweet thrilling call of the cardinal. He thinks he is hidden, but his red feathers against the green betray him. As I view all these things, I am filled with joy beyond expressing. lVIy soul thrills to the very name of springtime VVhy is it that I am so happy at this 'particular time of the year? The other seasons are beautiful, but never do I find life so restful, so calm and full of contentment as I do now. Furthermore, it is my belief that I am not alone, there are others who feel the same way. lXIaybe it's because of resurrection. God has turned a new page in the book of life, and it's clean. Klan, it is given you to write whatever you will thereupon. He gives ns two springtimes, and at one time in life they coincide. Springtime of life- springtime of seasons-how alike they are. Tender ,young humans as well as plants thrill to the beaming of the sun. Some are scorched by its rays and die. Others are made stronger by its presence and grow into what God meant them to be. Again, spring offers inspiration. VVho can look on the brightness of Nature arrayed in her green garb, while over the heaving breast of old Mother Earth a million streams laugh and play, and not aspire to order his life in harmony with the supreme laws? I guar- antee that no person can step outside and view the art of God as it is now revealed and still hold in his heart an ill will toward a fellow man. As the cool breeze fans his cheek and Nature pours her healing balm into his soul, rest comes quickly and all unhappiness is forgotten. VVe cannot look into the future. It is given us to see only the present. But we can reach for higher things and be satisfied that God did not place us in a world with- out sunshine. Of course, there are clouds, but after all, there's beauty. Too, therels abundant happiness in this world. Behold the lambs that frolic in green pastures. They live in the glorious shade of the green trees and are contented with their lot. We, who have so much more intelligence, know that better is coming, if only we wait long enough for it. Spring- time should be eternal in the souls of men. Last night when I lay down to sleep, I heard in my soul the call of spring and the merry note of the mocking bird mingled with the sweet low call of the dove. As its last coo died away in the distance I fell asleep-contented. -Lottie Former. 7 i Pagc One Hundred Fourteen THE APACHE CHANT elre Awache trihesnien, VV 1 Uauntless, brave, and strong. The .Iunior College is fortunate in having a large number of such persons in its student body this year. These students are not only talented but are exceedingly loyal to the college, and therefore use their abilities for the general welfare of the school. Often- tiines the services of such students are rendered in a way so unostentatious that the vphole group is scarcely aware of those who deserve the credit. Therefore, it has become customary to devote a page of our yearbook to the recognition of these students. This year we will honor Doris YVilliford, Annie Price, Brannon Taylor, Lottie Fortner, and Robert lNfIcCoy. Doris NVilliford, because of her artistic faculties, her histrionic talent, and her journalistic aptitude, has proved herself indispensable to the Apaches this year. As the efficient editor of the Alcalde, as an active participant in the work of Las lklascaras, and as an enthusiastic member of the Atta Kula Kula Hiking Club, Doris has con- tributed generously to the enrichment of the college life. Her bubbling vivacity and her friendly good nature have endeared her to both faculty and students. lVe commend Annie Price because of her hearty co-operation-in every constructive measure which the college has undertaken. ln reviewing the various activities of the year, such as the Thanksgiving drive for the library, the picnic given by the Senior Council Group for the high school mid-term graduates, the Student-Faculty banquet, the sale of stationery by the A. li. lslfs, Annie Price is remembered as shouldering her full share of the work. ln whatever capacity Annie served, those in charge knew that her part would be well done. XVith all of these extra-curricula activities, Annie maintains a high degree of scholarship. She does all her work creditably, whole- heartedly, and happily. Brxnnon Taylor, president of the Apache Council, member of Las lylascaras, and assist nt business manager of the Alcalde, has rendered faithful services to his alma matsr. He is thoroughly dependable and is never too busy with personal affairs to aid in the promotion of some worthy enterprise for T. sl. C. Brannon has been instrumental in maintaining the spirit of co-operation which has characterized the student body this year. Clentlemanly and unselfish of manner, Brannon has won the admiration and respect of his associates. XVe are glad to honor Lottie Fortner. Although Lottie holds no office in the student body, she is conscious that a part of the responsibility is hers, and she assumes this responsibility with enthusiasm and cheerfulness. As a member of the Alcalde staff, l.ottie has had charge of the kodak section, a work which she has done with alacrity and skill. An active participant in numerous college affairs, hiking club, a member of the basketball team, a weekly contributor to the Pow-NVOW, Lottie has been a valuable Apache. Also Lottie's name has consistently appeared on the Honor Roll. Robert lIcCoy, by his constant upholding of those ideals which mark a whole- some college spirit, is deservant of honor. Although he signs the name of L'Lochinvarl' to the numerous lines of lilting verse which he has contributed to the Apache Pow- lVow, Sir Galahad would be a more appropriate pseudonym. Robert is keenly sensitive to beauty and the amenities of life. Much of the cleverness and originality of the Student-Faculty banquet was clue to Robertls ingenuity. Active in Las Mas- earas, always ready to do his part in any undertaking, and yet unconcerned with praise or credit, Robert is truly a prince of a fellow. It is with pleasure and pride that we honor these students. K fl V ', ul Page One Hundred Sixteen Lf, , WAR PAINT I - - . RM ..,M,5m. 'vw A-vfw a 5 - Q' ' ,ff A 'F ' L ,' S! 1 , ,.,. ..
