Wakkanai played host to the THOMASON during , September 14-18th. A small provincial town of 5.5,000, Wakkanai citizens were genuinely enthusiastic about THOMASON' S visit and they turned out in quantity to attend open house ' aboard the ship. PEARL HARBOR , HAWAII, visited by the THOMASON during the period of April 29 through june 4, provides a lush tropical setting for a major U. S. Naval Base. Thomason personnel were frequent visitors to such familiar landmarks as the Hawaiian Village, Diamond Head, Aloha Tower, and, of course, Waikiki Beach. MIDWAY ISLAND was a fueling stop for the THOMASON on her transit from Pearl to Sasebo japan. Total time spent in Midway was five hours , enough time for everyone to take a picture of a genuine Gooney Bird. - SASEBO , the westernmost city in japan, lies on the south shore of the north western tip of Uyushu guarding the important narrows between japan and the East China Sea. The port is important primarily as one of the two major U. S. Naval Bases injapan. During the Korean conflict Sasebo was the scene of great military activity as her close proximity to the Korean pueninsula afforded United Nations tropps with an excellent advanced base. As a commercial port, Sasebo is relatively unimportant. THOMASON visited Sasebo on 16 June, 10 August, and 24 September for periods up to one week. OSAKA, industrial metropolis, dramatic center, and second largest city of Japan, is often described as the Venice of japan because of its numerous canals and bridges. The canals were constructed in the fourth century by Emperor Nintoku who made Osaka his capital. Today Osaka is the manufacturing center ofjapan. It has extensive shopping and entertainment districts, and several places of cultural interest. YOKOSUKA CYOKOD , japan, the large Naval Base usedby the U. S. Naval Forces for their headquarters in the Far East, is located near the entrance of Tokyo Bay about twenty miles south of Yokohama. The city of Yokosuka is spread outside of the main gate of the Fleet Activities over rolling terrain, and her many small shops offer the visitor a vast choice of , oriental goods. THOMASON visited Yokosuka on three different occasions, from 22 August to 5 September, 10-18 October, and 13-21 November. , THE BRITISH CROWN COLONY OE HONG KONG comprises an area of approximately 391 square miles and includes the Island of Hong Kong and a section of the mainland which is divided between Kowloon and the New Territories. Numerous uninhabited islands are also included in the New Territories. The principal business area is located on the Island of Hong Kong and is officially known as the City of Victoria although is generally referred to as Hong Kong . Numerous bays and inlets, as well as subtropical vegetation, make Hong Kong Island a place of great scenic beauty. The harbor itself is considered to be one of the most beautiful in the world. 7
