' A After several years of X Stateside operations and training, the THGMASON departed San Diego , on 5 December 1948 for her first tour of the Far East. She was based at Tsingtao, China from l 1 january to 24 May 1949 and returned to San Diego on 23 june 1949. , Another WestPac cruise followed in january of 1950 when JOHN W THOMASDN conducted maneuvers with combined units of the SEVENTH FLEET and ships of the British Navy opera- ting in the South China Sea Returning in April of 1950 she entered the San Francisco Naval Shipyard for overhaul and reconditioning before returning in September to Join units of the SEVENTH FLEET in support of the Korean War Used primarily as a screening unit for Fast Carrier Task Force 77 the THOMASON was also assigned shore bombardment duties and conducted destructive fire on Korean railyards and other installations On 21 February she rescued a downed aviator from the carrier ESSEX south of Yang do Island 2 A I 1 I ' 1 1 2 . . . . . 1 - 1 ' 4 -- ' -'nav Y Plum ' 1 :, L-134511 ' :,27:i-'afxf 'YAv- 1 V ru.f-:aua1:- ' r f- - ,.
