SQWSH1 SAMMY PAUL EILERAE1 6 E U R NX I have been given an impossible task. To speak briefly of our shipmate and friend, Petty Officer Sam Eiler. I say impossible, because how can I put in words the sum of all that Sam has been to USS JOHN RODGERS I can- not Nothmg within me IS equal to that task No words I can say will add or detract from all that our friend and shipmate was to this crew I do ask you to take a moment however and consider this Sam was always a man of service His career was one of unselfish devotion to the care of the Officers and men of the JOHN RODGERS He devoted himself to making each of our lives a little easier to tolerate His was a life of service and he gave that life to us So lt is fitting and right to take a moment now and recall all that Sam has done for each and every one of us I am certain that he would rather have us give thanks for all that he has done for us and count ourselves fortunate that we had a chance to serve along side with him that for us to feel sorrow at his passing I think if each and everyone of us took just one opportunity to help just one person whom we otherwise would have hurried past or ignored in our daily routine then we might get a glimpse of how Sam lived his life every day and certainly that bit of giving on our part would be a tribute to Sam who gave life to us With that I think lt would make Sam very proud of the Officers and men of the US JOHN RODGERS QDD 9831 QM1 QSW1 William C Calohan USN Sammy Paul Erler was born on 12 August 1952 in Kirksville Missou rl to Mr and Mrs Carl Eiler After attendmg Kirksvllle Senior High from September 1967 to May 1969 he enlisted in the United States Navy on 30 March 1972 in Kansas City Missouri He attended Basic Training at Recruit Training Command San Diego California and during his sixteen years of Naval service he attended numerous schools for the Ship s Servlceman Rate and served at the following duty stations USS I-'ORRESTAL QCV 591 Navy Exchange Branch Commissary in Charleston South Carolina USS STUMP QDD 9781 USS DONALD B BEARY QPF 10851 NAB Commissary Branch Store Little Creek Virginia and reported onboard USS JOHN RODGERS QDD 9831 on 28 June 1985 During these years he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal Meritorious Unit Commendation Ribbon Marksmanship award Third Good Conduct Award and four Sea Service Deployment Ribbons He is survived by his mother Elizabeth Marie Glassple Eiler his wife Janet Victoria Woods Eiler his daughter Jo Ann Eller and his stepdaughter Crystal Ann Woods 1952-1988 9 f 1 F w vb U r J 'E J ' - . , rt 5 I .,.
