Located 260 miles south of Madrid, on a 'narrow coastal plain, Malaga is famous for its exports of wine, citrus, and olive oil. Orange and lemon groves fan out in a semicircle of rose-colored hills beyond the city. Founded by the Phoenicians around 1100 B.C., Malaga has since been controlled by every empire - Carthaginian, Roman, Visigoth, and Moorish. Malaga still retains a strong Moorish flavor. In the Old Quarter, white houses huddle along the maze of narrow streets. 0n Gibralfaro Hill, a thousand feet above the harbor, an Eighth Century fortress stands intact, with its caves and dungeons where prisoners once languished. , V- ... . .U n-11.1.1 - -A- As -El - llusimr

The wmd was exceedingly brisk the day JOHN RODGERS dropped anchor in Tangier. Locat- ed at the northwestern tip of Afri- ca, 36 miles southwest of Gibraltar, Tangier has a subtropical climate of dry summers and mild winter rains - an appealing attraction for Eu- ropean tourists. The principal lan- guages spoken in Tangier are Ara bic, French, Spanish, and English JOHN RODGERS was in the com pany of various U.S. Navy am phibious transport and assault ves sels for Exercise African Eagle Several crewmembers went ashore for what they thought would be a brief visit. But as daylight dimin ished, sea conditions worsened One crewman fell overboard try ing to board a liberty launch, and the starboard side Accommodation Ladder was badly damaged when the waves slammed a landing craft into it. Boating was secured stranding many ashore. Some spent the night at other Navy ships, while others checked-in at local hotels. Though our stay was brief, it was truly memorable - : ,. ,- . - -H-.- V 1--,-i I I
