The fifth port of call on MED 3-88 brought us to La Spezia, Italy. A major Italian Naval port, La Spezia lies 70 miles south of Genoa, at the center of the Gulf of Writers . Its water- front promenade is evenly lined with palm trees. Its city parks are meticulously land- scaped and dotted throughout with statues. Although it was heavily bombed in World War II for its strategic impor- tance, La Spezia has been totally rebuilt. The city offered us an oppor- tunity to relax and en- joy the scenery of Northern Italy. A fa- vorite diversion was traveling by train to nearby Florence and Pisa. L
