Villefranche, which may not be as well recognized as its border- ing cities of Nice and Monte Carlo, is on one of the loveliest bays in all of Europe. Among the things Villefranche had to offer were plentiful sidewalk cafes and fine French restaurants. Many crew- members took the opportunities to visit the popular tourist attractiions such as the Chapel Jean Cocteau at the Quai Courbet, decorated by French writer Jean Cocteaug and the Citadel, built by Vauban in the 17th century with its Fort and Gardens. Still others wandered into the beautiful countryside or visited Nice, and watched as the French prepared for the Christmas season.
