JR came to this city after a week of opera- tions in the Realm of the Czars, the Black Sea. Located on the Sea of Maramara, between the Bos- phorous and Dardenelle Straights, it came into sight like a turreted city out of a fairy book. Turkish culture, thou- sands of years old, seemed neat- ly entwined with the very mod- ern. Merchants here weave exquisite rugs and tapestries on hand looms, much as their fa- thers before them did, utilizing the same secrets handed down from generation to generation. Others sold brass, wood, and fine ceramics, often enthusiastically. LA MADDALENA 3 La Maddalena, Sardinia is located on the beautiful Costa Esmeralda, or Em- erald Coast, of Sardinia. This region is known for its excellent pastas, and lit- tle fishing villages and ancient towns full of artistic woven articles. La Mad- dalena is actually a small archipelago, and many JR ,sailors took the available boats to explore neighboring villages like Palau. While in La Maddalena, JOHN RODGERS hosted a group of Italian students from the Scuolla Sotto Ufficiali, or Petty Officer School, who had seen the sleek lines of JOHN RODGERS as she entered. The stu- dents were particularly enthralled with our modern, computer-enhanced bridge and engineering plant. They carried away with them a Welcome Aboard pamphlet translated intO Italian, as well as a touch of American hospitality.
