From stem to stern, JOHN RODGERS is armed with some of the latest and most modern weapon systems in the fleet. The Tomahawk missile is capable of being launched against ships, at ranges in excess of 200 miles, or targets on land. The Harpoon missile is also used against ship targets, at ranges up to about 60 miles. The 5 54 MK 45 lightweight gun mount, the most modern in the fleet, is a multi-purpose gun. JOHN RODGERS' two mounts can be used for attacking surface ships, for shore bombardment, such as the gunfire support JOHN ROD- GERS delivered in support of the multi-national peacekeep- ing force in Beiruit in 1983, and for anti-air defense against aircraft and missiles. The NATO Sea Sparrow missile provides JOHN ROD- GERS' primary anti-air defense, and can shoot down in- bound missiles at ranges in excess of five miles. Our latest addition, the 2.0 MM Close-in-Weapon System, or CIWS, is a gatling gun capable of firing 3000 rounds, per minute and is designed to kill any missiles that may leak through our other layered defenses. To meet the underwater threat, JOHN RODGERS uses MK 46 torpedoes in three ways: they can be launched from an embarked SH-2 Sea Sprite helicopter, directly over the side from torpedo tubes located port and starboard, or configured as an Anti-Submarine Rocket, or AS- ROC, which is a torpedo with a rocket booster to propel it to greater ranges. Last, but not least, one should not forget the arsenal of machine guns, rifles, shot- guns, and pistols kept onboard to keep JOHN RODGERS secure from terrorist attacks. ' ' '
