The Tomahawk missile is capable of being launched against ships, at ranges in excess of 200 miles, or targets on land. The Harpoon missile is also used against ship targets, at ranges up to about 60 miles. The 5 54 MK 45 lightweight gun mount, the most modern in the fleet, is a multi-purpose gun. JOHN RODGERS' two mounts can be used for attacking surface ships, for shore bombardment, such as the gunfire support JOHN ROD- GERS delivered in support of the multi-national peacekeep- ing force in Beiruit in 1983, and for anti-air defense against aircraft and missiles. The NATO Sea Sparrow missile provides JOHN ROD- GERS' primary anti-air defense, and can shoot down in- bound missiles at ranges in excess of five miles. Our latest addition, the 2.0 MM Close-in-Weapon System, or CIWS, is a gatling gun capable of firing 3000 rounds, per minute and is designed to kill any missiles that may leak through our other layered defenses. To meet the underwater threat, JOHN RODGERS uses MK 46 torpedoes in three ways: they can be launched from an embarked SH-2 Sea Sprite helicopter, directly over the side from torpedo tubes located port and starboard, or configured as an Anti-Submarine Rocket, or AS- ROC, which is a torpedo with a rocket booster to propel it to greater ranges. Last, but not least, one should not forget the arsenal of machine guns, rifles, shot- guns, and pistols kept onboard to keep JOHN RODGERS secure from terrorist attacks. Morris Electricial Officer Engineering Department is why the U.S. Navy exists - They're what make us mobile. Their job encompasses everything from the anchor windlass on the fo- csle to the massive rudders aft, from the aircraft warning lights on top of the mast to the screws deep below the waterline. Many spend days upon end deep in the main spaces, not knowing whether it's night or day, sunny or raining, they just keep the en- gines running, electricity com- ing, and fresh water flowing. JOHN RODGERS' modern en- gineering plant eases their job somewhat. Gone are the steam boilers making engine rooms re- semble saunas, replaced with modern gas turbines: quiet, cool, efficient. In the central control station, valves align, fuel flows, and engines start at the push of a button. These are the men that enable the ship to master the seas. JOHN RODGERS derives her graceful maneuverability from her twin rudders, her twin screws push her at 30+ knots. . 37 mr, -W if s, .... .,........ From the thousands of different spare parts stocked onboard, and thousands of dollars each payday, to the hun- dreds of meals prepared daily and so- das in the vending machines, Supply Department is what keeps us going. Their duties are wide and varied: pro- viding spare parts and office supplies, doing laundry, stocking the candy and sodas in the vending machines, operating the ship's store, cutting the crew's hair, and paying the crew is all their job. To S-2, food means from the grocery list for a family of 350 to scrubbing the dishes. And every two weeks, the same men that line up for meals, line up for a paycheck. Truly, one could argue that the S that iden- tifies each supply division, rather than Supply , stands for Service . BT' i I i hi ENS Prentice E. These words were heard time and time again as JOHN RODGERS went about keeping her fuel tanks and storerooms full. Nearly all fuel, ammunition, and provisions received during the deployment were by underway replenishment, rather than receiving them inport. The fre- quent evolutions kept the old salts on their toes, and provided good training for those who will take their places on deployments to come. Perhaps the most unusual replenishment of the deployment happened in Toulon, France, when the rigs were passed from USS SAVANNAH in the adja- cent berth, and the replenishment conducted while pierside. But no mat- ter where we were, the floating gro- cery stores and gas stations kept us going, providing that mobile logistic support that only the U.S. Navy is famous for. Also recently refurbished prior to the deployment, the Physical Fitness Room gave everyone a place to exercise, something not abundant in the close confines aboard ship. It seems the indoor bicycles logged almost as many miles as JOHN RODGER5 did, as both fitness fanatics and those looking to trim down pumped the pedals. The Com- modore's Club, instituted by CDS-22, gave tangible incen- tives, such as T-shirts, to those who needed an extra nudge to put on the gym clothes. But ei- ther pumping the pedals or pumping iron, crewmembers found another way of breaking the shipboard routine. 103 - .....,......,.,........,....,...-..........,................... i..l .,,..,...-...-....,. -..,.---.-fq-.v-.--.q,-....-.......----w-'- --,5 ,K ,,-,X ,, 1' HA MI G IT I ,- 'f v' Af' 'ffm W M-we-, 1- 5' Xxjlfffiggs ia wif' il K J ' o I -Lf V' ix i 0 - U will f f, X yeerrsemf ff-0 IW eaiwlilzs Atwfsvgl W lil 1 l::: all Mx' O s LV J AJ O mil-'fe 5 ef if -Tis KS A' L 4 0 .
