School days filled with joy and laughter Soon will be a memory. May they teach us to be braver As We face our destiny. Hail to thee, our Alma Mater, Help us now to prove our worth, As we strive to do thee honor, Garden Spot of all the earth. Through the years our foes discerning, Red and black - our flag We'll fly 0'er the best in sport and learning. Hail to thee, McCaskey High. DONALD HAGEN . , . HAROLD KREIDER ., CHRIST SHOWALTER To those who have gone forth from the Senior High School t of Lancaster into the service of our country's armed forces we the Class of 1942, do, with sincere respect, dedicate this our L yearbook. Especially do We remember the following enlisted Marine Corps Marine Corps Navy AirCorps E?-l OTE WOT School days filled with joy and laughter Soon will be a memory. ' May they teach us to be braver As We face our destiny. i As we proudly sing the stirring strains of our Alma Mater, we realize that our years at Mcflaskey High really have been filled with joy and laughter. This past year, a tense and cataclys- mic period of rapid changes and historic actions has brought out that fact more significantly than ever before. Our people have been attacked, our Way of life has been threatened, and our country has launched an unrelenting War to protect us, to crush out such treachery, and to make the World safe for future peace. Yet, throughout all this, throughout all these trying times, our daily school life has gone on uninterrupted, scarcely even altered. As long as Democracy is secure on this earth, the light of free public education shall not flicker. As long as our schools are open, We can be certain that the torch of Liberty is still burning. May this book of high school memories be throughout our lives a symbol of that great American principle of education which We shall always love, and which We shall always strive to preserve. Our glorious land to-day, 'Neath Educatiorfs sway, Scars upward still. Its halls of learning fair, Whose bounties all may share, Behold them everywhere, On vale and hill. - Samuel Francis Smith All the Worlds a stage, And all the men and women merely players. They have their exits and their entrancesg And one man in his time plays many parts. - Shakespeare Reading maketh a full man, conference a ready man, and writing an exact man. - Bacon all Wlil4i4tfEii0'l't AB., A.M. September, 1939, and the Class of 1942 timidly passed through the portals of the Iohn Piersol McCaskey High School. We were green sophomores, determined to set up our own regime. But, there were already two mighty classes waiting in ambush. The yearlings had to endure seventh periods, poor grades, and wild-goose-chase corridor directions liberally handed out by cold-hearted seniors. Everything we did was wrong. But, it was not long till we gained recognition in the school. Members of our class distinguished themselves in the Student Council, and the various musical and athletic organizations. Somehow, we survived the first tortur- ous year. Now we were lordly juniors. No longer would our class be trampled on. And how we did take advantage of the new crop of sophomores who repeated the performances of past classes! Then came the time when we must choose leaders. Richard Landis was elected president, Charlotte Book became vice- president, Wilette Maley, secretary, Patsy Iones, treasurer, and Robert Usner was elected for a two-year term as historian. The other members of the class still engaged in the many extracurricular activities - football, basketball, soccer, swimming, wrestling, and track, together with the non-athletic depart- ments of music in the band, orchestra, and glee club, debating, journalism on the Vidette, and government in the Student Council. Several from our midst were elected to the National Honor Society. Soon, however, the session drew to an end, there remained but one year to spend at McCaskey. In October, the class returned, this time as seniors. Responsibility was assumed with the acceptance of the torch which had been passed on by the Class of 1941. The class colors, navy blue and gold, were selected, and a class emblem adopted. The first step necessary for efficient management was the selection of officers. Philip Dunn became our new president, Ralph Cramer was elected vice-president, Ruth Reese, secretary, and Donald Peters, treas- urer. With this, the class took supreme command in all departments. We were again well represented in the Student Council, our athletes presented the school with several notable victories, while the musical group entertained with a Christmas Concert. Dramatic ability was displayed as our class Thespians stood before the footlights in the play, The Young in Heart. But then came December 7, l94l, and Pearl Harbor. Several of our class- mates, anxious to serve their country, left our midst and enlisted in the various branches of the service: the Army, Navy, Air and Marine Corps, and the Coast Guard. Some of the remainder were elected to the National Honor Society. The musical division exhibited its talents in Gilbert and Sullivan's operetta, Patience The social committee sponsored several all-school dances during the year. Then the end slowly came into view. Class Day and the Senior Prom were successful features. The curtain has come down. Still impressed on our memories are the successes and failures, joys and sorrows of a high-school education. The first streaks of dawn are visible on the horizon of a new life. We depart now, determined, ambitious, inspired by the opportunities which are now presented to us. The game is on. We'll play the game-play it hard and fair-we, the CLASS OF 1942. ROBERT USNER, Historian ssl CML fcffon Farewell, a word that must be, and hath been, A sound which makes us linger, - yet - farewell. As we depart from McCaskey High, carrying with us fond memories, cherished hopes, and some new hard-Won knowledge, we leave behind us loved associations which have, in a few years' time, become a veritable part of our mode of life. Familiar corridors and classroom doorways, desks used day after day, and textbooks through which we have patiently plodded, all take on a new and glowing friendliness. We'1l miss the rush and din between classes, and the thrills we felt creep through us as We joined together in a massed assembly. We try hard to express our appreciation for the sound advice, the under- standing counsel, and the high inspiration our teachers have so carefully given us, but the words seem to fail our lips. To the many friends whom we must leave to fill our places We offer a parting wish for continued success and achievement. Farewell, McCaskey High, and all you stand for. We are proud that we have been a part of you. Seventy Otfaniiafivn4 f . kim' C li? x E H, T 5 0 UA Editor-in-Chief .. Senior Editors . . . Sports Editors . . . Organization Editor Photographers . .
