As Father Time cast his glance upon the throngs of happy people who the curb, eagerly awaiting the parade which was slowly approaching of police come into view, we notice that the nrst float contains a year announces our Sophomore activities, meager as they were. The second float shows a group of small frightened girls dressed in their sand- lined along the escorts glass which to appear sophisticated, but failing sadly in Iirst days in Stevens High School as lowly ost in the wilderness of girls! the attempt. Sophomores, and highest-heeled shoes, trying How this brings back to us our wandering from room to room, l A sigh from the crowd causes us to gaze on the next float. In a classroom a number of students are studying eagerly or at least 'trying to give the appearance of it. A teacher sits at the head of the room and checks pink slips. Oh, yes, we must admit that the eighth Period has a place reserved in our history just as we have often had our places reserved for ns in its period. A new sand glass introduces our Junior Year. It is evident that it has just been turned. The next float contains an understanding teacher and a group of tive girls, larger and more conndent than the sophomores. This represents our Junior Class Otticers. The President's part is portrayed by Beatrice Arnold, the Vice-Presidei Lamparter, 'the Secretary by Mary,Miller, and the Historian by Florence Miller. Greiner is our very helpful advise1'. Japan is the setting for the next event. There are many Japanese boys and on the stage, but in the center of the group there is one figure, which, in arms crossed, stands out. He is The Mikado? Some of our classmates helped in senting this successful operetta. In the distance a float catches our eye. It appears to be covered with bln it by Ruth Miss girls with pre- black e and white crepe paper. New as it comes nearer we see that our class colors are displayed by 'the white sweaters and blue emblem ot the Mid '37 Class. The Order of the Founders and Patriots of America march before us. group we see -our classmate Elizabeth Herrold, the winner of the competitive given by the group. Leading the examination On the next float a choir appears-as we listen we. hear the beautiful music of 'The Messiah . Father Time smiles as he turns the glass for our Senior year and watches as we assume our role of dominating Seniors. The next iioat shows an election and as the ballots are counted it is discovered that the following girls are to guide our class through the last year: President-Ruth Lani- parterg Vice-President-Ethel Bitzerg Secretary-Beatrice Arnoldg Treasurer-Elizabeth Herrold. A keystone with a brightly burning torch symbolizes tl1e National Honor Society. Beatrice Arnold, Ethel Bitzer, Almeda Cressel, Esther Givant, Nancy Herr, Elizabeth Herrold, Ruth Lamparter, Mabel Lynch, Florence Miller and Jean Simons represented us in this group. The Senior Class Play occupies the next float which shows to the crowd their many Growing Pains . Beatrice Arnold. Mary Greenly, Nancy Herr, Ruth Lamparter, and Florence Miller helped to straighten out the ditliculties of high school boys and girls. Another Glee Club presentation comes into view, this time Patience is given and greaty enjoyed. Again a choir helps to entertain 'thc crowd of people, the lovely music of i'Elijah selected for this year. Around a table the Class Day, Social, Announcement, and Flower and Motto Com- mittees are busy at work, preparing for graduation. Before them are placed the plans for our Senior Prom, Class Day, and Baccalaureate Services. These remain as our only activities. The last float contains a year glass from which all the sand has drained. This tells us that it is 11ow time to depart ani to cede our places to others who are seeking their fortunes of education. Beyond the glass a translucent curtain hangs, we see the light of the future beckoning us to march forward, but 'thc events which are to follow remain unknown to us. So we prepare to leave the school which we have learned to hold in such high esteem, the teachers who have been our patient guides, and the girls with whom we have spent so many happy hours: regretting that which has passed, 'but hopeful tbr the future. Florence Miller Boys' Class History Lives of great 'men all remind us. We can make our lives sublime, And departing leave behind us, Footprints on the sands of time. How little value we, the Class of Mid 1937, would have given this verse as We gathered in the awesome immensity of the auditorium of the Lancaster Boys' High School ill February of 1934. Wie were just a group of some hundred odd sophomores, aptly termed greenies, who felt we could never achieve a greater state of insignitieance it we tried for a lifetime as we absorbed the scorn of the lofty seniors who gazed at us from all angles. NVe were duly installed, after a short one hour talk by Mr. Herr on the rules and regulations concerning the school in general and sophomores in particular, in our Various home-rooms where We learned the idiosyncracies of our many teachers and they in turn Ito our dismayj quickly learned ours. Our sophomore year began amid the memorization of lock combinations tllltl exasper- atiug searches for rooms in unexplored regions of the building. In due time, lroavever, we mastered these and many other intracacieswxi' our iirst year and then our nerves being sutliciently quieted. we began the formation of friendships with fellow-students and teach- ers that will last throughout life. Thus our sophomore year, interrupted only by a much needed vacation, rolltd smoothly along as we took the eighth periods, senior orations and other pagues with angelic serenity. One blot marred this first year. Two classmates, Robert Barrick and Nvllillll' Singleton were gathered in by the grim-reaper within a short twenty-four hours. They were well-liked and respected by all who knew them and their memory will linger with us. Then one morning we awoke with a start to find 'that we had escaped the tentacles of failure and were now known at G. H. Q. fthe otlicej as Juniors. And now the here- tofore undiscovered talent that had lain dormant for a year began to blossom forth in all its glory. VVe the Class of Mid-1937 began to rise and shine in 'the orbit of school life. Our iirst class meeting was held this semester and we organized as one body C-although not as one mindi for the first time, The leaders chosen to guide the class through fair weather or foul during this ycar were V President .,.,.......,.,,,,..,............,.........,... ,.,. ..,.......... ....,.,. H arold Eager Our class colors of blue and white were also selected at this time. The second semester of this year found membrs of our class represented in practically every phase lof school activity. We were greeted with several agreeable surprises during this year, Health was added .to our curriculum as an entirely new subject in Boys' High. The band also took on a touch of completeness as they marched forth one day in brand new jackets. Then having had enough of Chemistry, American History and English literature and 'they having had enough of us we breezed through examinations once more and breathed a deep sigh of relief when they were over. Gee! What a thrill! We, who may accurately be termed survivors. rushed to the coveted seats in the parquet to take our places as seniors. As such we entered 1113011 the last leg of our high school life. We faccd this year with mingled hope a11d fear. Before us lay the great, unknown, unexplored and unconquered. What would be our reaction? Happily we now have the answer an'l that answer is joyous success. Before we had time to recover frtin the successive blows of physics. social problems a11d the various advanced languages the dramatic ability in our class was called upon to enhance the ammal senior play 'tGrowing Pains. Seven members of our class were cast for various ingenius roles and ably performed to make this play one of the most suc- cessful in school history. The hitherto unsuspected romantic abilities of XYallace, Robin- son. Marple. Clemson, Huehnergarth, Eager and Herr were astonishingly natural in llF0U'l15'al. The glee club gave its annual production Patience this same semester. Again several members of our class helped make it the success it was. Every key position in school was under the guidance of some member of our class. Harold Herr capably controlled the- why's and whereof's of the Student Council with Paul Marple and Gerald Bowman ably assisting him. Thomas Robinson was appointed Editor-in-Chief of the Vidctte and is to be com- mended for his excellent work. He was given valuable support by Harold Eager, Paul Marple, Allan Wallace and Richard Huelmergarth. The Honor Society was equally well managed by members of our class. Gerald Bow- man was its president, with Thomas Robinson as vieo-presiden,t, and Paul Marple as secretary. Other members from our class were Harold Herr, Samuel Congello. Harold Rubinson, and Charles Clemson. In athletics too. our class was not to be denied. with t ramer, Wallace. Haldy Horning, Laushey, lwiarabella and Mentzer carrying on in football and basketball. The annual Christmas program carried out in conjunction with the senior class was a great success and its me1n'ry will forever linger with us. Then name cards. photographs, oratorical, contests and final exams served to remind us that graduation was at hand. Quickly in succession followed the Bacculareate sermon at St. I?aul's Methodist Church, the Commencement exercises at which time the four orators of our class, Harold Herr. Paul Marple. Harold Rubinson and Allan NVal- lace, were accorded due honor: and iinally we staged 'the crowning social event of our class, the Senior Prom amid a scene of Splendor and gaiety. At last the curtain has been rung down on the drama of our high School days, days we will forever cherish deep in our hearts with their joys, their sorrows and their achieve- ments. In parting, may we ever strive to live up to this noble sentiment. Let us be men among men. f-- -----A --A A--- --A-----::::::::::::::::::::::::::4y U ll APPEL WEBERS ua li A Store Devoted to the Better Gifts in jewelry 40 NORTH QUEEN STREET l' ll tu f f 4 L ..eAeere .....Ae4 --.se ..Ae -------ee----- vvrr - Y- --v----v..-YY --,,vv-- F.
