ommanding fiicer Commander Lawrence GARPEI TER Commander CARPENTER is an native of Lake Oswego, Oregon and enlisted- in the Navy in December 1947. During his ten years as an enlisted man he served on board USS MISSISSIPPI IEAG-128l, USS COLUMBUS ICA-74l and USS NORTON SOUND IAVM-11. Com- mander CARPENTER attended Officer Candidate School, Newport, Rhode Island, through the Seaman-to- Adm-iral program and was commissioned Ensign in the U.S. Navy in August 1958. He was subsequently assigned to USS BOSTON ICAG-1l.' In 1960, he served on precommissioning unit for USS CHARLES F. ADAMS IDDG-2l and later on board after commissioning as Missile Officer and First Lieutenant. He was then assigned to the precommissioning unit for USS GRIDLEY IDLG-21l and served as Missile Officer and later Weapons Officer after the ship was commissioned. In 1965, Commander CARPENTER attended U.S. Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, California and was awarded his Bachelor of Science degree with a Business Major. Upon graduation, in 1967, he was ordered to the USS SAMPSON IDDG-10l as Executive Officer. Upon completion of this tour, he was assigned to Destroyer Squadron THIRTY-SIX as Chief Staff Officer. Returning to the West -Coast, Commander CARPENTER was then assigned to the NROTC Unit, Oregon State University as Executive Officer. During this tour he wasawarded a Masters'Degree in Business Administration. He assumed command of the USS JOHN PAUL JONES IDDG-321 on 29 June 1974. Commander CARPENTER is married to the former Kath- erine Jean SMITH of Lake Oswego, Oregon and th6Y have three children, Carl, Kathy and Chipper.
