These men, enlisted, chief, and officer alike, with their diligence and hard Work, made a successful and safe cruise possible. They are the men who givegthe ship a character, a personality all her own. They are JOHN KING. Y . D D The members of this unique crew shared .much in common. They sailed together, complained together, got drunk together, partied together, and most important of all, returned home together. ln the face of many an adversity, as well as during the good times, they were somehow bound together as one. From the firerooms to the signal bridge, from the forecastle to the fantail, they have worked as a team. sk iff if 2:7151 Co.M.MANi9HNG oziailioisa CDR JERRY D. BEVERIDGE Commander Beveridge received his commission upon graduation from the University of Oklahoma in 1960. His first assignment as a commissioned officer was to the USS UNION IAKA-,106l as Deck Division Officer and Boat Group Commander. He remained aboard the USS UNION for two years, at the end of which he received orders to USS BANNER QAKL-251, where he served as the ship's Executive Officer. Commander Beveridge's tour of duty on the BANNER ended in October 1963, when he was selected for the Navy's one year nuclear power training course. He spent six months at Nuclear Power School in Bainbridge, Maryland, followed by six months at the reactor plant prototype at Idaho Falls, and then was sent to the world's first nuclear powered aircraft carrier, the USS ENTERPRISE QCVAN-651. He was aboard the ENTERPRISE from November 1964-June 1967, serving as Reactor Laboratory Division Officer. During this tour of duty, the ENTERPRISE became the first nuclear powered warship to engage in actual combat operations. Following this tour on the ENTERPRISE and a subsequent one year tour on Staff ff the Commander Naval Air Force, Pacific Fleet, he was assigned as a student at the Naval Postgraduate School at Monterey, California. He graduated from Monterey in September 1970 with a Master of Science in Operations Research. After graduating from Monterey, Commander Beveridge again received orders to the ENTERPRISE, this time as the ship's Damage Control Assistant. During this tour of duty he qualified as an Engineering Officer of a nuclear powered ship. He left the USS ENTERPRISE in December 1972, and began one year of training at Newport and San Diego, which preceded his tour aboard the USS BAINBRIDGE ICGN-251. He served as Operations Officer from January to May 1974, then Executive Offfcer from May 1974 to February 1977. Commander Beveridge wears the Navy Commendation Medal with two Gold Stars, The Navy Achievement Medal, the Navy Unit Commendation, the Meritorious Unit Commendation, the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry, and the Vietnam Armed Forces Honor Medal, First Class, in addition to various campaign and service ribbons. He is married to the former Sara Beth Hawk of Bartleville, Oklahoma. The Beveridge family includes two children, Grant and Clay.
