They can be found on s ips, billets, in heads, on leave, in love, and always in debt. Girls love them, civilians hate them, and the government supports them. A true sailor wears: tattooed arms, a deck of cards, sunglasses, a camera, a portable radio, and the latest issue of th s eed Hustler. He has the energy of a slug, the slyness of a fox, e p f a turtle and the sincerity of a sidewalk peddler. 0 , His wants are usually indecent, immoral, fattening, or against Navy regulations. His dislikes are: superior officers, Navy chow, answering letters, and getting up on time. These men, enlisted, chief, and officer alike, with their diligence and hard Work, made a successful and safe cruise possible. They are the men who givegthe ship a character, a personality all her own. They are JOHN KING. Y . D D The members of this unique crew shared .much in common. They sailed together, complained together, got drunk together, partied together, and most important of all, returned home together. ln the face of many an adversity, as well as during the good times, they were somehow bound together as one. From the firerooms to the signal bridge, from the forecastle to the fantail, they have worked as a team. It is only fitting that they be recognized in USS JOHN KING's cruisebook lor perhaps more fittingly, crew's book.l. -,,,.V.5,,.,,e . LLL. 1,-,i--LH: ,H wm..,Q,',1,-,g,.,,7, .Ll . During this long career, he was twice awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. A native Irishman, .John King was born in 1865, migrated to the United States as a young man, and enlisted in the Navy in 1893. He served first on USS VICKSBURG, where he earned his first Medal of Honor, and was aboard that vessel when she participated in Admiral Dewey's victory at Manila Bay in 1898. By 1909, the year he earned his second Medal of Honor, John King had been promoted to Water Tender Chief after serving in the boiler rooms of thirteen naval vessels. He- served on two more ships before he was discharged in 1916. ln April of 1917, with the outbreak of World War One, John King was recalled by the War Department. He added two more years to his already long career at the Navy Receiving Station in New York City. He received his final discharge in 1919, and was added to the Navy retirement list in 1926. He died on 20 May 1938. WTC John King distinguished himself in the annals of Naval, and American, history by being one of the few servicemen ever to receive two Congressional Medals of Honor. The first award came in 1901- while John King was serving on USS VICKSBURG. The citation, signed by then President Theodore Roosevelt, reads as follows: Onboard the USS VICKSBURG, for heroism in the line of his profession, at the time of the accident to the boilers, 29 May 1901. ' The second Medal of Honor was awarded in 1909 by President William H. Taft, and the citation reads similarly to the first: Onboard the USS SALEM for extraordinary heroism in the line of his profession on the occasion of the accident to one of the boilers of that vessel, 13 September 1909. The memory of the heroism and dedication of WTC John King serves as an inspiration to all of us who serve aboard this fine ship which bears his name. The Sedjoumi site is an old rifle range and was the scene of executions by French firing squads during the independence struggle. The current monument is a national place of devotion and meditation in memory of all Tunisians who fell during the fight for independence.
