Lieutenant Commander MACAULEY received his commission upon graduation from Officer Candidate School in October 1962. Prior to that time he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree at Missouri Valley College. After attending Navy Schools in early 1963, Ensign MACAULEY was assigned to USS LOOKOUT QAGR-21 as Assistant CIC Officer. Following a year long tour there, he was assigned duty as First Lieutenant aboard USS GUARDIAN QAGR-11. In 1965 he left the Navy and entered the school of Architecture at Memphis State University. He returned to the Navy in 1967 and served as First Lieutenant aboard USS NEWPORT NEWS QCA-1481. lt was aboard her that LCDFl MACAULEY earned his Officer Of The Deck iFleetl and Command Duty Officer qualifications. There also he made two wartime cruises to Vietnam. LCDR MACAULEY left the fleet in 1969 to attend the Department Head Destroyer School in Newport, Ftl. He graduated from there in 1970 and became the Operations Boss aboard USS CONYNGHAM QDDG-171 a job he performed until 1972. He was course director of the Tactical Action Officer School at Dam Neck, VA., until 1974 when he reported aboard USS DAHLGRENQDDG-121, again as Operations Department Head. Following his tour at the Dam Neck School, the XO participated in an Officer Exchange Program as a student at the Senior Officers Maritime Tactical School at HMS DRYAD, Portsmouth, England. ln 1976 LCDFl MACAULEY began his tour as JOHN KlNG's Executive Officer. He will leave us in early 1978 for a billet at NAVSURFLANT, Norfolk, VA. CCJIVIMANDING OFFICER 2 JULY 1975 25 APRIL 1977 CDR T. . KELLY III Commander Kelly was born in Brewer Maine, the son of Thomas W. Jr., and Anne Ellias Kelly. He graduated from Maine Maritime Academy in 1959 where he received a Bachelor of Science Degree, U.S. Coast Guard License and his commission as an Ensign. His first sea assignment after commissioning was on the USS BOXER as Fire Control Officer. This tour was followed by extensive studies in Mine Warfare where he received a subspecialty in that field in 1962. He next served as Executive Officer of the Minesweeper USS SWERVE QMSO-495i until February 1964. Upon completion of this tour aboard SWERVE QMSO-495i, he attended the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California and graduated in 1965 .with a degree in International Affairs. Commander Kelly's next assignment was as Navigator aboard the Guided Missile Destroyer USS SAMPSON QDDG-10p until 1967 followed by a two year tour of duty aboard the Guided Missile Destroyer USS CLAUDE V. RICKETTS QDDG-Sy as Operations Officer. His next assignment was Operations Officer on the Staff of Commander Mine Forces, United States Atlantic Fleet until 1971. During his next tour of duty aboard the Guided Missile Destroyer USS JOHN S. MC CAIN QDDG-36i as Executive Officer from 1971 to 1972, he saw ten months of combat duty. It was during this tour that Commander Kelly was cited for exceptional valor during heavy counter battery operations. In 1973 Commander Kelly graduated from the United States Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island and then served on the Staff of the Commander in Chief United States Atlantic Fleet from 1973 to 1975. ln July 1975, he assumed Command of the Guided Missile Destroyer USS JOHN KING QDDG-3y. ln addition to various Service Medals, Commander Kelly wears the Bronze Star with Combat V. l
